Yankees Draft, Day 2

Going into day one, the Yanks were set up with their highest pick in 22 years and three picks in the top 60.  It seemed the best strategy would be to draft BPA and add significant talent to a rebounding farm that could still use more high end talent everywhere.  That doesn't seem to be what they've done so far, though, if Kaprielian is touching 97, he is a high end talent.

Ecologically, what the Yanks could really use on the farm was more hitters in the age 18-20 range, and more starting pitchers.  They are flush with relievers as well as 17 year old hitters (thanks to last year's IFA splurge) and hitters in their early 20's, like Judge, Jags, Bird, etc.  So prep bats, and prep or collegiate starters seem to be the order of the day.

Yesterday, it looks like they saved some money.  Today, I wouldn't be surprised if they popped a high end prep talent in round 3, then took college seniors through round ten.  They would then be able to put their additional savings toward more signability kids after round 10, which was their formula prior to last year.  The key is to really infuse some high end signable talent from a pool that is not as deep in players like that as it was on Day 1.

As I mentioned, I think being risk-averse is playing an important role. From Cashman on down, they know they have been very bad at development, so they may believe that selecting high floor/low ceiling players offers them the chance to reverse that

I wonder if part of their thinking is to make up for the hole left by the injuries to Hensley and German and possibly Clarkin by focusing on some pitchers they think can move quickly through the system, like Lindgren.

One take on the Holder pick is that Cito Culver had better get his bags packed.

Phil -- Assuming Kaprelian signs right away, where does he start: SI or Charleston with a possible advance to Tampa? If the latter, then he steps right in where they had planned for Hensley.

He's an advanced pitcher -- I would say they will probably limit his innings this year (already over 100) and should get his feet wet in Tampa.

I say Kaprelian goes to SI. I think the bats the Yanks wanted were gone just before they picked, they took BPA and that happened to be a P.

I think the Holder pick is very similar to the Culver pick. I think it's obvious that the Yanks reached for Culver when all "arm chair" scouts were right in saying he was not a 1st rounder.

Picking Culver was incredibly stupid. At least this kid has played college ball.

Culver is pretty much worthless with or without Holder.

Not sure where JK will start, but it will depend on his IP and what else they do. I doubt they will start him in high A, regardless of what they do. But we'll see.

Btw, I believe the Analytics department is playing a bigger and bigger role in the draft.

I don't think that is necessarily a good thing.

For example, when Chris Young was en fuego, Cashman talked about how the analytics dept. pushed for his signing.

Getting as much data of all types is very important. But that doesn't mean it will be used correctly.
