Yanks Draft Day 1 Review
The Yanks must be loading up for something. Otherwise, night one can only be seen as the draft team following an ownership dictum to draft floor, with one pick below it, and only college picks. At # 16, their highest pick in 22 YEARS, the Yanks took RHP James Kaprielian out of UCLA. Kaprielian has been described two different ways. First, as a four pitch pitchability guy with a superbly located 89-92 mph fastball. Second, he's been described as that same guy with a 92-95 mph fastball. That's a completely different animal, though, I hope they can get whichever he is at a number that is below slot.
They then threw away the number 30 pick. Seriously, it would have been better for them to just take a college senior whom they could have signed for 5K than to take a no hit shortstop. If this character gets even half of slot, then the Yanks don't understand how to work the new rules.
With the 57th pick in the draft the Yanks took senior LHP Jeff DeGano. DeGano is a fastball, slurve change guy whom they will probably try to develop further as a starter, but they better be getting him for peanuts.
Overall, this looked like it could be a monster draft for the Yanks, with three day 1 picks, four top 100 picks and their best starting position in 22 years. Thus far it is looking like anything but a monster. They need to save big on these first three picks and have a huge day tomorrow.

As much as I try to be positive, it's decisions like these that make me want new faces from the top down. :-/
I really trust our scouts, but cannot make head or tail of what was done tonight.
No secret I wanted Aiken, but I actually do like the No. 16 pick. The other two I'm not a fan of based on what info I have available.
Really want to hear from Oppenheimer or Cashman on these picks.
Yeah, I think JK could be something if he really is hitting 95. And never mind an LHP with swing and miss, but that #30 pick. Yeesh.
Ownership doesn't prioritize defense over offense.
It's either ownership tightening the purse strings, or the Yankees simply not understanding the draft. Either way, it's not good.
Ownership prioritizes dollars, and also college over prep since that meeting they had after the `13 season.
There are better ways to draft with budget constraints. There is a baseball management failure.
Let's wait to see what else they do. If they are way under slot on the first three then get Everett and some other high upside kids tomorrow and can sign them, they're exploiting something wrong with the draft.
Phil, is that something you've confirmed with sources RE: college vs. prep preference, or just speculation? Honest question.
Speculation based on what Hal said in the papers last year and the difference in what we have since drafted. We were getting prep heavy earlier.
Last year we didn't sign a single prep. DeCarr was a 19 year old post grad.
Gotcha. I will say I'm legit excited about Kaprielian if the news about his tick up in velocity is accurate, and after watching this piece, I'll be rooting for the guy like crazy:

Yeah, it's easy to root for him, but if the velo is up he's a one or a two, if it's not permenent he's a 3.
