Yanks Take RHP James Kaprielian
The Yanks went with with a polished college arm at 16. I don't thin this guy has ACE potential and I don't understand how the Yanks just used their highest pick in 22 years on this guy. I really don't. I guess whoever they wanted was gone. He's a 4 pitch guy who's fastball is 89-92. Ian Kennedy II but not an ACE and that's the kind of pitcher you need to get at 16. I hope I turn out to be wrong, but I had a sick feeling about this one. Hope he's Maddux II, instead of IPK II.
UPDATE: Appparently, last night on MLB radio they said James Kaprielian now sits 93-95. So, if that's his stuff with a knockout change, then maybe he has a higher ceiling and isn't just a floor guy.

So, there's this: http://www.hardballtimes.com/katoh-goes-to-college-projecting-college-pitchers/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Ugh, Indians just took Aiken a pick later. One I wanted.
Yeah, this is underwhelming:
Kaprielian could have factored into the top two rounds of the 2012 Draft as a California high schooler, but he lasted until the Mariners took him in the 40th round because he was set on attending UCLA. He was one of the Bruins' top relievers on their 2013 College World Series championship team -- he didn't allow a hit in six postseason appearances -- then became their No. 1 starter and led the Pacific-12 Conference in strikeouts (108 in 106 innings) as a sophomore. He didn't have the best stuff in a U.S. collegiate national team rotation that included Louisville's Kyle Funkhouser and Vanderbilt's Carson Fulmer last summer, but Kaprielian did have the best "pitchability" and is the safest bet to become a mid-rotation starter in the big leagues. He works with an 89-92 mph fastball as a starter, and he's effective at that velocity because he can locate it. Kaprielian's best pitch is his changeup, and he also has a solid slider and a curveball to give batters a different look. With his command and strong frame, he's built to be a starter.
It makes sense if you have doubts about your ability to develop pitchers.
So upset Buz. We pass on Nikorak for a Kennedy clone ?
If Aiken becomes a stud... SMH.
Our highest pick in 22 years and we do this.
They don't have the confidence to take a rest there
Maybe below slot? I'm grasping...

I'm just pissed I now have to learn to spell "Kaprielian."
We need massive upside at 30 and in the second round tonight.
Got a report I am looking into that he is now sitting 93-95 and that's a whole different story.
Conflicting reports on his velocity. Guess we'll have to see. He should move through the system fast, so that's a plus.
I wasn't going to be happy outside of Brady Aiken no matter what, so I'll hold off on making any judgments either way.
Ugh, this guy...
@BenBadler: First pick RT @CaptnJack24 Ben, where would you expect yoan moncada to go if he were in this draft?
I think his velo is up, because he looks like more that 200 now and I think the lower velo was his Team USA report.
more than 200.
His velo jumped about halfway through the season to where he sat comfortably at 93-95 touching 97 --- this is no where near an Ian Kennedy clone
This was from May 15. I think Billy knows this guy:
@kileymcd: UCLA RHP James Kaprelian dealt tonight for multiple scouting directors & Friedman/Byrnes. 9 no hit IP vs strong UA lineup 93-96 much of game
If he's 93-96 with the four pitch mix and including the knocout change, that's a whole different animal.
Yeah, Kennedy sat 88-91 IIRC. Never thought he had the stuff (or makeup) to succeed in what was a tough AL East at the time. This seems different if those reports are true.
@M_Stypulkoski: @pinstripealley covered some of Kaprelian’s outings in Cape Cod two summers ago. Kid had nasty stuff then, imagine it’s only gotten better.
Velo jumps aren't always enduring.
Anyway, wanted offense.
Okay, Yanks have him at 92-95, and that's better than a #3 guy with his other three pitches.
Lawyer, he got bigger.
@mikeK, Yes I know Kiley and will say that you all should follow his work on Fangraphs. He provides a lot of in-depth analysis and unlike some other people that cover the draft/prospects (keith law, jon mayo, jim callis, etc) he actually sees a lot of prospects in person.
I think this sets up for a big pick @ #30-- i'd be ecstatic if we grabbed Cameron.
