Yankees 2015 draft, Pt. 2

This is my yearly proviso about some of the inefficiencies that the Yanks tend to take advantage of and the fool's gold I hope they avoid.

Over the Oppenheimer Draft era, the Yanks have often been saddled with late pick, no early picks, and sometimes too little money for picks from the owners.   Because of these conditions the Oppenheimer and the Scouts have had to loo for market inefficiencies to try to make up for some of the value they were missing from the late and missing picks, etc.

They've done it by popping swing and miss relievers like David Robertson and Jacob Lindgren, picking no leverage seniors with upside like Adam Warren, and taking kids from areas outside the baseball hotbeds, like Dellin Betances from Brooklyn.

Another thing they've done is taken some kids who showed dominance during the year before their draft year, but not as much in their draft year.   Those were generally small bets that they'd find it again.  Phelps was like that, and I assume they really have to good feel for the character of the kids on such picks.

The fool's gold in draft are the collegiate players with draft eligible sophomore status.   People have ponied up for them, but they're really only kids who are a year behind the other kids their age, so they should be measured against juniors and not because they look good for sophomores.  Thus the Yanks shouldn't pay them any extra because they have 2 more years of eligibility instead of one -- let them go on to be old seniors.

We'll start seeing this year's class take shape later today.  Here we go!

Caleb Smith also fit that bill, much better the year prior to the draft.

Take the fat pitch. IOW, don't think you're smarter than everyone else with Culver or Bichette. Take a player within the range of consensus BPA.

As have a few others, but I was trying to use examples that have made the show. Btw, right after I told you last year's college starters weren't really flashing yet -- they started to flash! How about that Holder!

Also, let's be honest, even their talented young players often fail to get an extended opportunity in the ML, as they have preferred (and still do) has-been names. That skews their draft record.

Lawyer,

Those were both slot deals, in years where they had better preps targetted for bigger dough later, like Bird and Williams.

You don't think there were better slot options?

I'd have to go back and look at who else was available and signed for slot.

I still wonder if Bichette was a pick just because Girardi and his father are buddies.

I hope not, but you never know.

I wonder if we'll pick DJ Stewart again and Mariano Jr. again.

Keith Law has us picking DJ Stewart @ 30 -- I kind of hope we are able to scoop up Kolby Allard with #16.

It would be fun if teams could trade picks.

I don't like Stewart .His stance is one that might not work at the MLB level and has a rag arm. NO THANKS

I really hope we don't pick Stewart, want some Preps at the end of round 1. Picking him with our first pick better not happen. I hope BPA but hope that is a bat with the first pick.

I am having nightmares of the Brewers taking Garrett Whitley, I'd like him with the Yanks pick. The Brewers pick before the Yanks and brought in Whitley this past week for a workout.

I am not found of James Kaprielian.....

I haven't seen the Trout in the Whitley tapes I've seen.
