Ranger Stuff, PT.1

Not going to get into the post-mortem yet - still too soon - but we did finally learn the extent of Mats Zuccarelo's head injry today.   He had a fracturted skull and a brain contusion that left him unable to speak for a few days.  Wow.  Very scary stuff, though doctors are expecting him to be ready for training camp.  Let's hope they err on the side of player safety here.

Second, the Rangers have traded one of last year's picks, D Daniel Walcott, the puck mover with the odd career path, to the Lightning to regain the 2015 7th rounder they sent to Tampa for MSL.   Odd.  Wonder what that's about.  You can usually get a this year's sixth or seventh for a next year's sixth or seventh down at that end of the draft.  So it's weird that they're giving up on Walcott now.

One of the worst trades in NYR history gets even dumber.

Might be Yzerman feeling bad about completely ripping Sather off in the Martin St Louis trade, Giving up Callahan, 2 1st round picks, beating him in the Eastern Finals and this 7th we are getting back for Walcott. I'm not sure Why Sather is throwing Walcott at TB but the way this trade is turning out, Walcott will turn into a Norris Trophy D Man.

Just a really strange little move.

That is why I view this season as a failure.

A large part of what makes sports so much fun to watch, imo, is the building process.
It can be a long process, as long as it is done smartly.

When you truncate it, especially so ridiculously, it's win it all or a failure.

I am glad Zucc is okay -- my source was actually right it seems although luckily it wasn't career ending as initially feared.

I think we need to explore a trade for Nash -- Potentially with the Blues for a combination of Oshie + other pieces.

I also think Talbot needs to be traded since he's a UFA next year and we have Skapski in the wings.

Too bad. I'd still be tempted to keep Talbot so that they have a backup who can play 20+ games without substantially hurting the team. One of the keys to winning the Cup is a goalie who can win 16 games in the playoffs. That's a grueling run and Lundqvist isn't getting any younger, so having him fresh for the playoffs and even having a backup who could start a game or two would be a big plus.

Billy Martin;

When I first heard about Zucc yesterday, my first thoughts were that your sources hit the nail on the head. Could be that your sources had the early information and Zucc was not speaking at the time, and was in pretty serious shape.

Lawyer;

I understand your theory about the building process, and all that. However, just looking a the results - the Rangers went to the 3rd period of game 7 in the Conference Finals. They were one of the final four left standing. That fact alone makes it difficult to classify this season as a failure.

That said, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. And I am in favor of trading Nash, although I do want some scoring back, plus some young blood.

It's a reasonable position, I just disagree with it.

I don't think you trade a lot for a 39 year old, no matter what.

It's tough for a guy like Yandle to be a big part of the offense without a training camp.

I want teams that I root for to be in a position to win for as long as possible, rather than to over leverage the present at the expense of the future, and then hope that luck shines on them. Luck is more likely to be in your favor over a longer time horizon.

Unlike the Yankees, they have been very good at in-house development. So they should maximize that strength by adding high picks, not subtracting them.
