This Week on the Blog
Last night was brutal. Anyway, we'll soldier on with less Rangers games than we had hoped to see this year. This has been a brutal year for most of our teams thus far... Anyway, let's look for a silver lining this week.
Yanks: The Dominican Summer League starts Monday and we will finally get a look at some of those kids they got in last year's IFA surge. The Yanks will once again have 2 teams, and they should both feature some names we know. And btw, the Yanks' DSL development program has been getting better and better over the past few years and could take a huge leap this year with the addition of all that talent. That's pretty much the most exciting thing I can say about the Yansks this week. Of course, next week is the draft and that's been the three days of Christmas around here.
Giants: The Giants will continue to figure out their OL as they go through more of their phase 3 practices. No more injuries please.
Knicks: The Knicks are hopefullly coming up with a good plan for their latest rebuild. Their latest tear down has been a disaster.
Rangers: The Rangers should take a week or so off, and then they have a lot of roster challenges ahead of them, and must find both more picks, and/or Hayes type college FA's as well as find more cap room to keep their core guys, and also make room for the talented youngsters they're gonna start losing if they don't make room.
Anyway, the exciting thing this week is the debut of all that Dominican League Talent. Have a great one everybody.
UPDATE: Holy crap, the DSL started today! Don't have scores yet, but should have rosters over at MiLB.com.

Lawyer, I know you'll disagree with me on this, but if Brady Aiken is there at the Yankees' pick, I hope they take him. Risk is there, to be sure, but the upside is tremendous.
Really liking what I've seen from Brian McCann of late. The power has been nice, of course, but he's also shown a bit more plate discipline. If he can walk like he did in Atlanta, it will help his offensive game.
Gotta let Pirela play more just to see what they have in him. Being in the lineup once a week is not giving him a fair shake.
Pirela in the lineup tonight. Given his average-at-best defense at second, not sure I'm too comfortable with Didi at short, even with as much crap as Drew is getting from fans lately.
The way I think about the Yankees and most teams in New York is if they think something smart it's probably not.
I can't speak on the Rangers or Giants (Knicks I don't follow closely but know enough to know they're a cluster; same with the Jets), but I can't really blame you in regard to the Yankees.
I saw someone on Twitter who covers the Yankees' minor league teams and has connections say the lack of youth playing is on Girardi and that meetings should happen soon to set that straight. He also said Capuano was signed because Girardi insisted. (Given Girardi's loyalty to Drew, I wonder if it was the same case for him.) If this is true, then Cashman needs to either put his foot down or find a manager who will play the kids. "He's never been comfortable with youth," was the quote I read.
Mike K, Girardi was known as a good Manger of young players when with the Marlins. His well documented feud with veteran Jorge Posada. So I think it's a matter of Girardi not wanting to play a young player if there are better options.
In the draft I hope it's OF Whitley or another Prep bat at 16 and a big SP at 30.
At the Marlins he didn't have much choice but to play youngsters, IIRC. I don't know if the Girardi stuff is true, but either way, this team cannot keep trotting out the likes of Capuano, Drew, Rogers and Carpenter when better options are available.
Please do keep us posted on the DSL, Phil, along with the rookie leagues. Your info is much appreciated.
I watched some tapes of Whitley a couple of weeks ago. Lots of bat waggle in his set up. I usually like a quieter bat.
Will Dermis Garcia be playing DSL ball? Heard a lot of good things about his bat. Read one comparison to Miguel Sano.
Dermis is over here and will be in the GCL. He's supposed to be better than Sano.
Awesome. Hope he moves through the system quick.
McCann can!
Mike to me the question is who is in charge? Torre had way more stature than Joey and Cashman forced players him when things turned sour. Things are considerably worse now. So if Joey is getting his way I suspect it is because that is what Cashman wants.
Who knows? My feelings on the team's leadership are no secret, but given the current ownership group, major changes aren't likely. So I hope it's a case of Girardi simply not being comfortable with youth and Cashman eventually telling him he has to come around out of necessity.
The reason I think it's Cashman is his own words, like we rely on old players rather than building the perfect beast.
Not that I think Joey is the right guy for the job.
So we need the old crap to suck so bad that they have no choice but to go young.
And young guys to make the most of any opportunity.
I would've left him in.
I think it's very dysfunctional and I do thin Girardi has the ear of someone above Cashman, and has for awhile - you now Dante Bichette Jr. is his godson, right. And it does seem that Cashman had more power under George. And that now others, including Girardi are involved in making the shopping lists.
