This Week on the Blog

Alright, this was a nightmarish week for Knick fans as they bailed on their rebuild and traded their franchise player for cap room this summer. We'll get back into that later.  The Yanks announced their non-roster invitees, Saquon won the Pepsi Rookie of the year, and the Rangers are on a little role.  Now let's see what's coming this week.

Yankees: This is the last week without Yankee Baseball till next November. Camp opens next week and it will be a big year.  They still haven't added a 6th starter, but they have enough guys ready if they need one, and later this year, guys like Deivi Garcia could be ready.  I'n the old, dynastic days, the Yanks could let Mickey Mantle make the team out of C ball, you don't see that these days because of big money blockers at the major league level for most teams, and they don't want to start arbitration clocks till they have to.  But I do think teams, including the Yanks, are starting at as if they know that players are more productive in their 20s then in their 30s, and that could take some real reckoning in the next round of CBA negotiations. Meanwhile, I didn't see anything about Captain's Camp, which is odd, but they probably have it going on.

Giants: The Giants won't do anything else till after the SuperBowl. I think they'll cut Jonathan Stewart this week, but, other than that, they'll probably start looking to open up cap room, and getting ready for the Combine.

Rangers: The Rangers, who have not abandoned their rebuild, are playing a little better lately.  Brett Howden is down for about a month, but Mika Zibanejad as well as Chris Kreider and Kevin Hayes have been terrific. And it's possible that all three will be traded for picks and prospects by the trade deadline.  There's a rumor about the Bruins trying to trade for one of the F's and both Kreids and Hayes are Boston boys, so who knows. They'd be fools to trade Kreider.

Knicks: The Knicks are fools. Interestingly, last year, when the Giants hired a new coach and GM, it seemed like they were required to  commit to Eli as a prerequisite for getting the jobds. Eli was old, and KP is young, but Dolan should have demanded that commitment from Perry and Fizdale, And he never should have promoteed Mills who's signature move so far was overpaying to bring back THjr, only to have to turn around and trade KP to get rid of him. That is abject stupidity, and betrayal of the rebuild plan, and franchise damaging.  Any imbecile off the street would have gotten better return if they'd convinced themselves they had to trade KP.  But they didn't have to trade him. They just had to keep him happy while they tanked, then got another lottery pick.  Instead, it's another Donnie Walshian sell off so they can big for FA's that aren't coming this summer. Sickening. Also, the NBA trade deadline is coming right up, so the Knicks will probably make more deals.

So there it is, Yanks, Giants, and Rangers keep on keeping on, and the Knicks change horses midstream. Have a great week!

I really think a lot of the incompetence we see is the result of the owners of our teams not being self-made men who had to compete by starting at or near the bottom in the real (very competitive) world.

The perception is that the Knicks treated Melo like shit, Oakley like shit, and now Porzingis like shit. Maybe there a contrary facts, but why would anyone who has choices want to play for them ?

At 10:39 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

DIsagree about Melo, don't know what lead to Oakley freaking out, and they squandered KP, and Dolan HAD TO protect him while he was rehabbing.

At 1:25 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Phil (Jackson) did trash him. But the objective facts even assuming you’re right really don’t matter if NBA players see the situation as negative.

At 7:17 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They fired Jackson right after he marketed KP, so I took that as meaning Dolan had his back.

At 7:47 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I meant Melo.

I think people persuaded Porzingis, and it wasn’t without facts, that the Knicks were hopelessly incompetent and they will always be. TBH, he had seen a very unstable franchise.

I don’t think Dylan is a particularly bright guy, and he seems to view the world rigidly, so he’s either in mettle mode or total hands off mode. Smart management requires more deftness...unless you’ve been given a few billion.

Dolan has been pretty sharp when it comes to saving Rock. And I think both the Knicks and Rangers are the most vaulable franchises in their respective leagues.

What’s a bigger gift than running a team into the ground and still having its value continue to increase?

That’s either really ninja or really in line with every other gift he had gotten in life.

I’m starting to think that if they get Zion Williamson big free agents may actually want to come here. But they’re going to play with Matthews and Jordan. So ...

I still can’t believe they’re in this position by trading their one potentially great player. Fuck.

At 10:04 AM, Blogger Rich said...

If DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews actually play a lot for this team and they start winning I’m going to think Dolan couldn’t take the losing.

I would love to know whose decision this was.

While I was shocked and upset over the KP trade, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. We've finally had a player to call our own, one we drafted and watched blossom but this blinded us to his faults and how he actually behaved.

For one, he's been a diva since he got here and his brother is a huge headache. For someone who's been constantly hurt and has only shown glimpses of his potential, he sure acts like he's accomplished something in the league. Now with that being said, this doesn't mean the Knicks franchise is the poster child for success but he's acted like a diva for some time.
Take for example when Fizdale said he didn't think he was running, Porzingis goes and posts a video of him sprinting.

Now if it's true that he told them he wasn't going to re-sign with them, the Knicks had to move him before Feb 7 otherwise he has all the leverage and they have to take 50 cents on the dollar. Well, you're probably thinking - no chance he turns down the chance to sign a max deal this summer in order to take the QO. However, that is not really his only option.

As a restricted FA, he can sign a 1yr deal (say $18mm) + player option with any team that the Knicks would obviously match. But in this scenario, you then have a guy who's on an expiring deal that will be an unrestricted FA.

To further complicate matters, we still don't know what type of player he's going to be coming off a torn ACL. The general rule is players can come back but it takes them up to a year to be at their previous level, even if they get back to that. If we assume this is the case, which is a risky assumption given his body type and prior injury history, a Kristaps Porzingis operating at 75% and on a 1yr deal is not as great an asset as we'd think. We'd be looking at a trade return probably worse then what MIN got for Butler.

I think the Knicks actually traded him at his peak value right now, considering he's out the entire year and wants to get paid. We obtained DSJ, who is a great asset and potential PG of the future, in addition to an unprotected 2021 1st and top-10 2023 first. The Mavs franchise is not this well oiled machine, these firsts can be valuable. Add on the fact that we got rid of THJ & Lee, it was a very solid deal on it's own.

Cap space is fools gold but in my opinion, it's easier to sell KD on coming to NY when he get's to chose his running mate versus say coming to play with the unknown of KP coming off a torn ACL.

Only time will truly tell how this plays out but I don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be. Should we trust this FO to get it right? Who knows but Scott Perry has been solid since his arrival (Melo trade, Mudiay trade, Vonleh signing, Knox/Mitch/Trier).

Lets just pray we get a top 2 pick.

I don't believe a word the Knicks have said about KP. They're acting like the Red Sox used to when they'd trade or not re-sign a guy.. The Knicks alway had the power to keep him, and having drafted him could pay him the most. Now we have a huge talent deficit.

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Do we have a huge talent deficit without KP? We're assuming he comes back to 100% right off the bat, which is a large assumption to make. Let's also not forget he was flawed -- terrible rebounder & passer. He was unique and he was homegrown, this has blinded us some as to what he was as a player....

To address your point, while we had the ability to offer him a max, there's no indication he would accept it. If he didn't want to be here, or was concerned with the direction, the 1+1 contract would have been a route that killed ANY leverage we had.

Ask yourself this - if you're Kevin Durant, what's more appealing:

Option A) an Unknown KP, Hardaway & Knicks 1st rounder
Option B) Kyrie (or Kawhi) / Knicks 1st rounder

At 1:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He was neither a terrible rebounder, nor passer. He was the only one playing the offense correctly. Ewing brlew out his knee as a rookie (23, I think) and was a bad rebounder till Paul Silas coachem him up in the late `80s.

David Mills brought back Timmy and should be fired.

They're not getting two superstar. Was nothing learned in 2010? They'll get Kemba and crap.

They need to win the lottery again, but I don't think this is a good draft class.

Needed a few minutes to clear my head at work so I made a prediction on the Opening Day roster based on spring training invites. Think I did this before but with pitchers and catchers reporting soon I thought I would again now that we have a better picture:

C — Gary Sanchez
1B — Greg Bird
2B — Gleyber Torres
SS — Troy Tulowitzki
3B — Miguel Andujar
LF — Giancarlo Stanton
CF — Aaron Hicks
RF — Aaron Judge
DH — Luke Voit

C — Austin Romine
IF — DJ LeMahieu
IF/OF — Tyler Wade
OF Brett Gardner

SP — Luis Severino
SP — James Paxton
SP — Masahiro Tanaka
SP — JA Happ
SP — CC Sabathia

RP — Jonathan Holder
RP — Stephen Tarpley
RP — Chad Green
RP — Adam Ottavino
RP — Dellin Betances
RP — Zach Britton
RP — Aroldis Chapman

60-day DL: SS Didi Gregorius, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, SP Jordan Montgomery

Notables in AAA/AA: C Kyle Higashioka, IF Thairo Estrada, OF Clint Frazier, SP Michael King, SP Domingo German, SP Jonathan Loaisiga, RP Tommy Kahnle, RP Ben Heller, RP Luis Cessa, SP Domingo Acevedo, SP Albert Abreu

Obviously, that's a playoff contender, but it's missing the big free agent bat. If only Hal had his father's passion to win.

KP has to priove he can stay on the court. If he can, his skills are ridiculous. And he added significant muscle mass over the last gear.

It’s hardly like Mills has a track record of NBA success.

NJ.com had an article saying that Cashman might turn to Machado if he if Arenado signs a long-term deal with Colorado. I don’t get this at all.

At 9:10 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Arrenado is the real target. Dont want Manny and his antics on this club.

I can see a midseason trade of Andujar going to Colorado for him if they fall out of the race. Not my ideal trade.

At 9:32 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Arenado is going to sign an extension. Yanks should be in in on Harper or Machado, especially this close to spring training.

In 2010, the Knicks only had cap for 1 super star....if you think KP wasn’t a bad rebounder or passer, you don’t watch the Knicks.

At 9:44 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Porzingis is still very young and is developing. Any rebounding shortcoming in my opinion has been due to having a weak base and because prior coaches have kept him away from the basket in their offense. If you look at him he has clearly done a lot of strength training during his rehabilitation for the knee.

Also, coaching and development has been a weakness here. For example, Hardaway is still flawed (mostly because he’s an inconsistent shooter) , but he’s a much better player than he was when he left the Knicks. So who have the Knicks had during Porzingis’ tenure who could actually coach anyone up?

If the Knicks are able to sign two really really really big free agents, I would be happy to literally eat crow and I don’t usually eat meat, but I have to see it to believe it given their track record.

So with that in mind, I would’ve stuck with the young player with a unique skill set and made any front office changes necessary to keep him.

I watch the Knicks . And we don't get personal here. In 2010 the Knicks had 2 spots, one was Amare' then they made the trade for Melo. Their plan had been LeBron and Bosch.

I am in distraction television mode so I am watching the Knicks and I have to admit it has been a pretty fun last 8 minutes or so.

Smith definitely has break down the defense skills that they haven’t had at point guard in a while.

At 3:07 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

My apologies, the Knicks did have 2 max slots to offer. Unfortunately so did other teams, which isn’t the case this year.

My point regarding Porzingis is he had unlimited potential but was a major risk. Take away the 10 game stretch to start last year when he avg 30, he was always battling some “injury”. Remember the supposed elbow issue? Not trying to knock him now that he’s out the door but players his size are extremely susceptible to injuries.

The question really boils down to did the Knicks get enough in return? Only time will tell

At 4:47 AM, Blogger Rich said...

They always trash people on the way out.

NYDN: .The Knicks’ front office, according to a source, did not believe in Porzingis as the franchise star. It had valid reasons, too: the 23-year-old is coming off ACL surgery, struggled to stay on the court previously because of other injuries and faded in the second half of seasons.

At 7:07 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Tobias Harris traded to the Sixers. So he would be a free agent that wouldn’t make sense for the Knicks because they don’t have the high end talent yet unlike the Sixers who want to keep him.

At 9:13 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

The Knicks didn't get enough in return, and owed it to themselves to hang onto him and see if they could salvage things, or at least get a better return eventually. One of the issues we're seing with teen entry into the NBA, is that they don't have ther "man strength." So they miss a lot of time with little injuries - we've seen that with Knox, Mitch and Frank, too. That's what we were seeing with KP, too. Also, he was constantly being fouled, and not enough of them were called. That might have protected him. But, as long as the league keeps drafting teenagers, development curves and injuries will be challenges. Smart teams will think their way through them. That's not the Knicks, who have alread traded Tim Hardaway Jr. 2X.

At 9:48 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I think I've made the case as to why holding onto him only hurt their leverage and why his value was not going to go up..

After reading Stein's article, who is not your typical Knick's jockey (aka Berman) - Porzingis team indicated he'd only sign long-term with Nets, Raptors, Spurs & Clippers - and the Mavs were one of the few teams not on the list willing to risk the assets without an assurance.

Isn't it funny that Mav's Carlisle specifically referred to Janis as "a part of our team" during the introductory conference?

At 10:07 AM, Blogger Rich said...

We’re flying blind until/unless we know the actual reason Porzingis wanted out of here.

He had to know that there was no way they were trading him to the Nets, so is that seems likely that was a big F U.

At 10:16 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Also as much as I hate this trade, if I’m Hawks fan that they traded Doncic was even worse because of his superior health and more years under control.
