Yanks Closing in on Ottavino

Alright, as they grow ever cloder to becoming the New York Rockees, the Yanks are close to adding Adam Ottavino to their already lethal pen. Ottavino was a JAG, until he suddenly discovered a wipe out slider. Literally, the best in the world. And he's now bringing it to the Yanks on what sounds like a three year deal. This could be an historically signicant pen. And K's can make up for cruddy D in a few spots.

As I said before, I’m good with most of the moves the team made this offseason (wish they had upgraded Gardner and Sabathia’s spots). Yet passing on Machado and Harper puts a damper on things.

I agree, but we still have to see what happens. We ended up getting ARod over Valentine's Day weekend.

Luxury tax can't be an excuse since they are now over. I agree Mike Machado or Harper should be no brainers..... Clint Frazier said on twitter he's ready to go for spring training!

Unless they sign Harper or Machado the off-season is bizarrely stupid.

What if Paxton is an ace?

Tweet from @JonHeyman: Yankees are working hard now on a trade for Sonny Gray. Appears to be getting more serious. Teams involved have included: reds, giants, brewers, a’s, padres, braves, mariners.

If Paxton is an ace I still don’t like the off-season because I would rather have signed Machado or Harper than Gardner, CC, Happ or two relievers.

I don’t have confidence in Cashman to build World Series teams.

Yankees are indeed close to trading Sonny Gray. Teams are also asking about Tommy Kahnle and Jonathan Holder.

This is getting interesting.

Yeah I was about to post that Heyman tweet. I think you have to trade both Gray and Kahnle just to clear roster space. If Holder goes too then you pen is Chapman, Betances, Britton, Ottavino, Green, Tarpley and either German or Loaisiga, which I actually think has the potential to be better than last year.

I trade Holder over Kahnle simply due to his FB tendencies. But who knows.

I do think they need to sell high on Holder. We know Gray is going at some point. Kahnle, Holder and Cessa might all need to be moved if they really think Tarpley deserves a shot to stick in the big-league pen (I think they should give him one). Is Ben Heller out of options?

Cessa can’t be worth much. Agree on the rest. Kahnle is out of options.

Man, the Knicks find imaginative ways to lose.

We have so many RHP's climbing the system, that it would make sense to move some of the late 20s guys to create more spaces.

BP is deep with alot of K's that will only help this infield defense.

Chapman can opt out after 2019 but cant see him doing that and Betances is a free agent as well after this season. It's a good safety net and shortens the game.

After this season Chapman is owed $30M. (He had a $11M signing bonus that the Yankees finished paying this past season.) If he has a dominant year I could see him opting out and getting more than that. All depends on his performance this season.

Heller isn’t arbitration eligible until 2021 so I would imagine he still has options?

Betances could leave too. They should have given him some of the bp money they spent.

I like this by Axisa:

Anyway, I went back to the turn of the century and searched for players who had a terrible second full MLB season (like Gary Sanchez) or a terrible third full MLB season (like Cano), then bounced back. Here are some examples, ignoring guys whose down year was the result of missing time to injury:

Good Year Down Year Bounceback Year
Yoenis Cespedes +4.0 WAR +1.4 WAR +4.1 WAR
Prince Fielder +3.6 WAR +1.5 WAR +6.3 WAR
Eric Hosmer +1.4 WAR -0.5 WAR +3.5 WAR
Brian McCann
+4.3 WAR +1.0 WAR +5.5 WAR
Yadier Molina +1.4 WAR -0.2 WAR +2.1 WAR
Stephen Piscotty +3.0 WAR +0.6 WAR +2.8 WAR
Several players, including Mike Moustakas and Jean Segura, had terrible second and third big league seasons before finding their way again in their fourth season. Repeat after me: Development is not linear. There are often bumps along the way.

Maybe Sanchez is bad forever now. It could happen. I am nowhere near ready to say that. Being a young catcher is really difficult because there is so much responsibility, plus Gary apparently played through some shoulder trouble last year, hence offseason surgery. Trust in the talent, trust that he can again do things you’ve already seen him do, and be patient.
