This Week on the Blog

Knicks and Rangers still coudn't finish games, Giants looked bad again, and the Yanks met with Manny, but have only been giving out minor league/st invite kinds of deals. Not terrible. but not particularly interesting. Let's take a look at this week.

Yankees: The Yanks are clearly in the mix for Machado, said to be in the mix for Britton, and still haven't traded Sonny Gray. The Dodgers, yesterday, sent a lot of homers to Cincy so that they could pursue Kluber and probably Harper. I think everyone must be thinking they could also make a Stanton trade if Harper, perhaps, wants to be somewhere else. We'll see. Meantime, it would be nice to see the Yanks tighten up the bullpen, as those guys are starting to come off the board, and we don't want Adam Warren after Adam Warren to get to Dellin and Chapman. There was some noise that Manny isn't going to make his decision till January. Again, we'll see.

Giants: the Giants have two games left - and if they lose both they may be able to get whomever they want in the draft without making a trade up. Sadly, these are our last two chances to see Saquon Barkley, Will Hernandez, Lo Carter and BJ Hill this season. The spectacular news is that the Giants have a ton of picks coming up in the 2019 draft, and if they can keep hitting on them like they did in the 2018 draft, they'll be good soon, and perhaps great as soon as they plug in the next QB.

Rangers: the Rangers can't hold a lead.  But that's okay, because, like the Giants, they have extra picks, and getting back in the lottery could be a great thing.  Chytil scored again the other night, and Buch has been scoring frequently, so has Kevin Hayes, who they should perhaps KEEP. That said, they will still have parts to deal for more picks and prospects at this deadline, so, the rebuild continues.  One proviso: I think Quinn is the guy, there was some grumbling this week about his not having the right kind of players. I hope that was supposition as I don't want to see a bunch of veteran crap rolling in for marginal wins.

Knicks: Kevin Knox is an exploding star.  But, he can't win without Mitchell Robinson and Alonzo Trier, who've both been out. They lost another one last night, which helps draft position. Anyway, Knox started out like a house of fire, then he sat, perhaps too long, in the second and after the half only added 5 more points.  Mudiay then scored 34, but I wonder if he was part of Kevin's second half slowdown. We need a PG who can orchestrate and distribute to KK and, eventually KP as well as hitting Robinson with lobs. Still the rebuild is coming right along and another lottery pick is essential.

So there it is: maybe some Yankee news under our trees, but probably more losing elsewhere.  Merry Christmas to all!

A wave of NPB talents will possibly make the jump to MLB next winter: Shogo Akiyama is set for intl free agency. Takahiro Norimoto, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, and Ryosuke Kikuchi are likely to be posted. Yuki Yanagita and Tetsuto Yamada miggghhht try to make the jump as well.

Don't know much about the others but Yamada (2B) should be a high priority if he indeed chooses to come stateside.

I personally don’t care about the HofF or unanimous votes, but if a writer-voter, let alone a RS writer, decides it’s ok to announce prospectively that he doesn’t believe in closers and consequently won’t vote for for Rivera, that should be a per se disqualifier if the voting process is to retain any legitimacy at all.

And will this writer vote for Ortiz despite the DH and ‘roid issues.

Lauletta is inactive.

I can’t remember a head coach or manager in New York that despised to the degree to which I am nauseated by Shurmur. He is stinking, rancid garbage. And every time Tanney is active it’s basically the NFL admitting we’d rather have wife beaters than someone who is exercising what one may consider objectionable free speech, which I thought this country was built on.

I don't hate him, but I am disappointed in him, and liked him a lot more during the draft.

I try to defend fellow sports writers as much as possible and can at least respect that he’s not turning in his ballot — and thus, not voting “no” to make Rivera not be unanimous — but it’s impossible to defend that point of view in particular, and a lot of writers’ hypocracy on the PED issue in general. (And yes, the same people who will exclude Bonds, Clemens and A-Rod will almost certainly vote for Ortiz and likely did vote for Selig, which is inexcusable.)

His absence has hurt.

Robinson (ankle) will be out for another week, Chris Iseman of The Bergen Record reports.
Robinson continues to progress in his rehab, as he now out of a walking boot and is into an ankle brace. He will at least another week, as the Knicks want Robinson back at full strength before bringing him back.

Heyman (is it likely that only one player was the driving force behind this?)

— David Robertson was always well-liked as a Yankee, but as George King of the New York Post first reported, there is some uneasiness after Robertson was seen as a leader in the meeting that limited shares to support staff this year. Word is Yankees GM Brian Cashman went to the trouble to investigate what went on there, as the Yankees pride themselves on treating staff members with the utmost care. Assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere was one of many beloved staff members not voted a full share …

Ex-Knick Bernard King is at practice on Sunday talking with NYK rookie Kevin Knox. King has offered Knox advice in the past.

NYG are probably going to further hurt their draft position next Sunday. Mediocrity for longer remains a risk.

A belated happy holidays to y'all from probably the only person here who would say "y'all."

If the season ended today, wouldn't the Giants have a top-10 pick? So they just need to lose, right?

Yes.

Happy and blessed holidays to all!!! Sounds like we will get some movement for the Yanks after the New Year. Sounds like Boras is drumming up Harper noise, because he's not getting offers he wants. Should the Yankees sign both, absolutely, will they not likely...

@DanClarkSports: Have heard that the #Yankees, #Phillies, and #WhiteSox have all made their final offers to Manny Machado, and it is indeed New York where he’ll be heading. Announcement expected early-January.

Was just gonna post that. Hope to God it is true.

I will have some faith restored in Hal if true.

When asked where he heard that from: “A former teammate/friend of Machado.”

I believe it's true, because why would three teams wait three weeks knowing he could only pick one. They'd want to know and I'm sure they do. Also, Clark was an Orioles reporter who was close with Manny and probably Manny's friends.

@DanClarkSports: I’m sure all these keyboard warriors throwing hate my way now, will be just as keen to throw apologies my way when Machado signs with the #Yankees next month..

That’s how Twitter works, right?

😘

Another guy's now reporting he's got it from a reporter source as well as friends of Manny.
