Yanks Whiff of Corbin

The Yanks didn't want to go past 5 on Corbin, which makes some sense, since he was unlikely to be their ace.  So, it looks like they've be welcoming back either JA Happ or Nate Eovaldi before the Winter Meetings begin. But let me pitch this: sign them both and use Eovaldi in the old Ally Reynold role until his arm explodes. I'm not kidding. Getting them both will be cheaper than 6 years of Corbin, and Eovaldi will offer dynamic flexability as long as he lasts.

REPOST: Glad they drew a line in the sand, honestly. Wasn’t crazy about going beyond four years with Corbin, much less five.

I’d rather give Corbin six than Happ one, unlike Levine I don’t think they’re currently as good as the Red Sox.

I do. They were too injured to win the division, but when they were reasonably healthy, they caught and passed the Red Sox. The Sox were also stealing signs...

Corbin got 6/140.

6/140 overpay...

They don’t have Didi. So they’re not even as good as they were

It appears to be a sellers’ market. Any really good player is going to be overpaid. The question is whether or not you think someone is really good.

Paxton makes them better than they were, and they are probably pretty far from being done. They're still going to get another starter, 2 relievers and stop gap at SS or 2B and a BAT.

At 2:03 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I see it another way but that’s cool.

At 2:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I have no problem with that. I think Paxton is Ace Ready. I hope Sevy gets it figured out again. Initially I had hoped with would let CC go and go trade for a starter then add Corbin and Happ. But that's been out of the question since we brought back CC.

SNY is saying we are not currently in on Bryce Harper.

Happ really isn’t an upgrade towards building a top rotation and he’s at an age when there is an increased risk of a decline. And the issue with Severino tipping pitches (that Cashman acknowledged yesterday) leaves wider error bars for his expected performance, meaning they need another top pitcher, not Happ.

Eovaldi has a big boom/bust quality. The Red Sox supposedly want him back very badly.

Although it will be expensive it wouldn’t shock me if they made another trade for a pitcher. I’m not endorsing that.

It’s not going to happen but I still believe Sonny Gray can pitch here. It would be cheaper to get a new pitching coach and work with him but ...

At 2:20 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If they decide they can trade Florial, they can get one of the Cleveland pitchers or someone else. I think they can because of Cabello, Pereira and Salinas, but we'll see.

Phillies and Giants talking about MadBum.

Much rather have Eovaldi for three years than Corbin for six or Happ for three. Even if Eovaldi flops in NY again whatever contract he signs would not be unmovable, and with the cutter I think he's a better pitcher than he was before.

I wanted Happ instead of Sabathia for the No. 5 spot but that bridge has been crossed already.

I don’t believe SNY about Harper.... Will it happen probably not, buit wouldn’t shock me to get both Harper and Machado...

At 3:18 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It would shock me.

At 3:42 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Only way that happens is if we trade Stanton.

At 4:03 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Long shot I agree, but I’ve always believed it was in the realm of possibility, they would spend on one, and pull a Teix for the other. FWIW Michael Kay says they weren’t as high on Corbin, and are saving the cash for someone/ something else... I wonder if they re-engage Cleveland?

At 4:07 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I guess we will see if they spend

I’m not saying it was the wrong decision baseball wise, but they let their avowed top target go because they didn’t want to spend. That suggests they will not spend big.

Let me remind you, Bubba Crosby will be our CF, Enrique Wilson will play 3rd and Nick Swisher will play 1B.

This is about money and it’s Hal’s team not George’s team. At least that’s the way I look at it.

At 4:33 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I think they were interested in Corbin, at their number. I don’t fault him for taking the cash, nor the Yankees for not budging on their number. I do think if it’s someone they really really want, they will get it done..

At 4:38 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yeah, I really don’t think this is about money. They (correctly, IMO) felt he was only worth a certain amount and weren’t willing to overpay. The true litmus test is Harper/Machado.

At 4:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

We will see. But as George Young used to say it’s always about the money and when they say it’s not about the money it’s even more about the money.

At 4:51 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I see the Hal era as establishing a valuation and not making a second bid past that valuation. We saw it with Yoan Moncada, and we saw it today. Having said that, do the baseball people come back with a free agent that they have a higher valuation on, since they won't have to commit what they would have commited to Corbin? We'll see. But I think fireworks are coming.

At 4:55 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I would argue with their of valuation of Gardner and CC, but let it play out.

At 5:06 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I didn't want either of them back, on the other hand, Boone wasn't asked to come in and "change culture" like Quinn, Fiz and Shurmur were asked to do. So maybe, and believably, Gardy and CC are on scholarship for their Yankeeness. If we're honest, we kind of love them both, and unless their numbers stop further acquisitions, it's understandable. So we have to see what the rest of the OS brings. But, I'm starting to feel fireworks are on the way.

At 5:50 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I felt differently about Moncada because of his believed ceiling at the time, and it only cost money. (Think the Yankees wouldn’t love to have Sale right now?) I don’t view Corbin as a No. 1, so he shouldn’t be paid like one.

Wanted Corbin but not at 6 years and glad Yanks stood firm.

Happ if they can get him on 2 years at a higher overall value that would be ideal.

At 5:53 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Can’t wait for Happ to fold like a cheap suit in a big game again.

At 6:52 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Happ’s fastball spin dipped noticeably last year.

I agree with Axisa. If they’re not great to spend now when are they going to spend.

SSS.

One game does not make or break anyone.

He also started pitching poorly in Toronto when the trade rumors started, which is a form of pressure.

A-Rod likes Eovaldi

Corbin is not the type of pitcher you give 6 / 140 to. 1 above average season, in which he had the highest chase % of his career. Once players lay off his slider, he is going to be hit hard. When you factor in who he excelled against this year (over 60+ innings versus SF/SD/PIT to a 2.5 ERA) versus who he would need to excel against with us (BOS/HOU), it's good we did not go crazy. He did not face patient lineups, his velocity was down and he threw sliders 49% of the time.

Do I want the Yankees to spend? Hell ya. They should be all in on Machado and Harper. Those are the players you give 8+ years with AAV of $25+mm to.

Corbin had what I would describe as shiny new toy syndrome. He's coming off a career year, is the best thing on the open market but he has significant drawbacks that scream not to go crazy over. Just like Darvish last year, I think the Nats will regret this deal when it's all said and done.

I have been all aboard the Eovaldi train to the extent I think i've been the conductor since he dominated us in Sept. He has a tireless work ethic, he has command and he has developed the cutter to the point that should his velocity dip down as he ages, he will still be a productive pitcher. The main caveat is obviously the 2 TJ surgeries, however, all pitchers carry risk. He has already proven he can dominate in the AL, he can pitch in NY and is still < 30.

At 9:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Definitely agree on Evo.

At 9:52 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Part of the reason I wanted Corbin was to ensure that they didn’t sign Happ.
