This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week saw the Yanks make some roster moves, the Giants win again, and the Rangers and Knicks continue to show signs of "young player development!" Despites the Rangers tank job in their morning game after Thanksgiving, our teams are winning all of a sudden. Let's take a look at what's coming this week.

Yankees: The Yanks have started making moves, both big and small. The other day they made a somewhat puzzling trade for Locastro, whom, I thought would be a DFA type, but last time I thought the Yanks took back a guy I thought they'd DFA, it turned out to be Luke Voit. He had a big AFL season, so we'll have to see. In the field of bigger acquisitions, I think they have to hold their ground on Corbin and if the years or numbers get too big, be willing to re-sign Happ. Likewise,  I'd like to see them play "Who Wants to be a Yankee More" with Machado and Harper. Machado seems like an easier fit, but Harper could be insane in YS. Adding either one of them adds one more of what we already have, so let's hope whoever it is, finally tips things back to where they belong. Not sure if we'll see anything this week - I think any Sonny Gray trade will wait till some of the non-reclamation starters develops.  But one will happen, since Paxton has already taken his number.

Giants: Winning is better than - you know - losing. Tomorrow the Giants tee it up against an injured Philly squad, so who knows what can happen. Wish we still had Ron Dixon. Anyway, as the OL has played better, we've seen a functional and somewhat creative and productive O develop. And our needs really might be for another passrusher and dback than for a "franchise" type QB.  Not saying the Giants shouldn't find another one, but they might be able to cover next year with Eli on a salary cut deal and Lauletta. If Eli won't cut his salary, then Lauletta and another QB prospect. I happen to think Lauletta is our next QB, but there are no certainties, I just don't want to trade up.

Knicks: Mudiay might not suck. When the Michiganders underwhelmed last night Mudiay and Trier took over the game and delivered a 4th quarter win against a Pelican team that had put 41 one of them in last Friday's 4th quarter. In other encouraging news Noah Vonleh has joinded Kanter as a double double machine and he's got a three pointer! Mitchell Robinson is impactful whenever he's on the court, but he's always in foul trouble and only played 9 minutes last night before being disqualified.  I'm getting a little worried about Knox. He doesn't really move without the ball on O.  In fact, he usually just runs to a corner and never cuts to the hoop when he's got a clear path. Ridiculous, but I'm sure they'll figure it out. They figured out Mudiay, and that looked much harder.

Rangers: The Rangers had a no-show yesterday, so I'm sure they all had too much turkey the day before and had earned it. They have another game in 2 hours and let's hope it's a more representative effort and Chytil starts a new streak. Having said that, Quinn sure seems like a hell of a coach.  We're seeing the young players get better, with the exception of Brady Skjei, which is sort of ponderous. Up front, after calling up Fogarty they other day, they added Gettinger yesterday.  Combined with Kreideer, Hayes, and Chytil, that makes at least 5 power forwards for 3 lines. I wonder what they can get for MZA at the deadline, where, regardless of their success they should be sellers and careful buyers. Let's go, Rangers!

So there we are, winning teams and a Yankee team trying to get back where they belong.  Have a great week!

I don’t want anything to do with Happ now that CC has signed. I don’t love the Paxton trade, but it’s a reasonable one. Everything else they have done this off-season to date is kind of bad
because it has been by complacency when none is warranted.

I don’t want go another season with Eli. What’s he going to do except make it more likely that they are mediocre... for too long. I see pretending as their goal not contending.

I love what the Knicks are doing, I would like to see more from Knox. His comments about his motor were concerning.

I think he's being coached to stay in the corner, as Frank is when he's not playing point, but I don't know why either never cuts or backdoor cuts...

Paxton was a great trade. Sheffield didn't look like a top of the rotation guy, Paxton does. I never thought Sheff was our number one prospect, and when the reached to AA for Loaisiga, that should have told all we needed to.

I would have preffered bringing back Happ to CC, but now that CC's here. I only see him as a leverage point for Corbin and his murderous slider, than I do as anything but a back up if someone gives Corbin crazy money.

Shurmur is the worst coach I have ever seen. The Eagles made adjustments and he made none.

And Eli showed that he isn’t worth playing. Bad decisions, locking in on a target and not seeing the whole field.

Barkley with 4 2nd half touches. Fuck every single person associated with this piece of shit franchise.

This is comparable to when Rozelle forced a GM on them. John Mara is a clueless fool who needs to have decision-making taken away from him.

I get frustrated with the Yankees because I think they are stuck at being very good but not great, but compared to the Giants they are wonderfully run, and Boone is refreshingly honest and competent unlike Shurmur who is a dissembling asshole.

Today was all on Shurmur, with Eli a close second. Shurmur is awful and game planning, and play calling. His game management skills are atrocious.

But the Knicks...YAY!

Knicks!

Gaints lost 2 TD, and settled for 2 FG's on blow ref calls. Sucks that we lost, but the D was porous in the second half and we were due 8 more points. Pick is now #5.

Earlier this week, the Yankees made their first big move of the offseason. They shipped a trio of prospects, headlined by left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield, for James Paxton. Before that trade went down, however, the Yankees offered Sheffield for superstar Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

This would have been horrible. Hal needs to stop the shit and buy out Ellsbury. Boston does it. There is no reason the Yankees shouldn’t.

When asked if Lauletta will play Sunday Shurmur said no, and asked why people think Tanney isn’t next in line.

He is a horrible coach and his stupid asshole.

I mean seriously if Tanney is a viable option why isn’t Kaepernick on the roster because he clearly better than him.

“The Yankees do not want to commit to one player in their DH spot, according to the report.”

I’m fine not trading for Cano due to the contract, but I hate this philosophy because it excludes them from signing/acquiring players like JD Martinez.

The RS are better run. I hope that changes, but it hasn’t yet

Again, Yankees are well run, and compared to the giants, they are superbly run. They just need to open their eyes to some things that need to change.

I’m not sure the Giants will ever be salvageable as long is Mara owns the team.

Just when you thought he couldn’t say anything dumber:
@TomRock_Newsday
Pat Shurmur on why he is sticking with Eli Manning and not giving Kyle Lauletta or Alex Tanney a shot even when this Giants' season is lost: "This isn’t player tryout." (link: https://nwsdy.li/2PXDxXa) nwsdy.li/2PXDxXa via

Something's very wrong with the Giants.

Nothing about the Red Soz management made Mookie Betts have a monstrously out of context season.

I’m talking about since 2001.

Damning with faint praise, but at least Mara didn’t sign Foster.

So while Ntilikina seems to be regressing in a role off the ball — when he does have it, Fizdale often has to yell at him to push the ball up the floor and play uptempo — the team’s lottery pick from this year, Kevin Knox, is continuing to look physically overwhelmed by the NBA. The 19-year-old was pushed around again and badly missed on open jumpers en route to a 1-for-7 performance. Fizdale also had him out on the court in the latter half of the fourth quarter and he too was out there for the comeback fueled by Trier and Dotson. Knox, however, did have a good drive for an and-one play with 2:13 left to cut the deficit to 10.

But overall, the rookie’s last few games have been a concern. He’s gotten roughed up on the defensive end — 11 fouls in the last four games — and on offense he’s hit just 9 of 31 from the field (29%) and 3 of 15 from three-point range. But the kid doesn’t hesitate to shoot the ball. This season he’s averaging 16 field goal attempts Per 36 Minutes. Much like Ntilikina did last season, Knox looks like he desperately needs an offseason of weight training and track work. He talked about the “motor” issue he had in college and it’s noticeable at the game’s highest level against the best players in the world.

Would a G-League stint help him find his shooting rhythm and confidence? Or is it better for him to continue getting rotation minutes and taking his lumps at the NBA level?

Boomer is out with the story that the Giants think that Lauletta isn’t a hard worker. I have no idea whether his “source” knows anything.
