Breaking: James Paxton to the Yanks

Jeff Passan is reporting that LHP James Paxton has been traded to the Yanks.  Not sure what for yet.  I'll keep updating.  Paxton is 30 and has had consistently good WHIP's, and was better in 2017 than he was in 2018, like Sevy.  I'll keep updating as we learn more.

UPDATE: It's for Justus Sheffield and two other prospects.  Wow. Depending on who the other two are, I don't especially mind this.  Sheffield has looked more and more like a #3, rather than a top of the rotation type guy. The other 2 are Swanson and Dom Williams.  Really like this move!

Dom Williams and Erik Swanson are the other 2 players. Swanson needed to be added to the 40 by tomorrow.

Justus for Paxton .... I like it

That’s more than fair given Paxton’s lack of ability to pitch 200 innings thus far in his career. The price would have been much higher if he had shown that ability. I like the deal.

I was being coy. I love it. He’s not a workhorse but he’s top of the rotation and has elite stuff.

This is great. Now do we just re-sign Happ, make another trade for a starter or sign Corbin?

The ninja has struck a deal!

I think this helps provide them some leverage / insurance in the discussions with the FA. Where as prior to this deal it would be Corbin or bust but now Happ/Eovaldi/Corbin aren’t necessities

Wish we'd gotten Snell when he seemed available.

I had just posted a comment on the "this week" post about the Yanks needing to get their 40 sorted out for the Rule 5 so we could have more posts the - BAM!

My overwhelming preference is that they just spend money, and this seems like a wanting to keep the payroll down deal, but if he’s fully healthy it’s an ok trade.

I still think they will spend. As long as they don’t take back salary for Gray I believe the AAV is the same.

Kluber/Andujar based deal. Sign Machado and call it a day.

Doesn’t look like Kluber is available. Yankees also supposedly don’t want to include Florial in any deal.

I think it’s way too early to decide whether this is a great move or not, but I think it’s balanced risk deal. Paxton has injury issues, nothing major, but still present having kept his IP per season down, and Sheffield has risks as well.

Heavy hitters like Amazon are bidding for the regional sports networks, including YES, that Disney has to divest in the Fox acquisition, so the right of first refusal price will be expensive.

I think Paxton is the kind of guy who can dominate a playoff game,.

At 8:21 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Sure, if he’s healthy. That issue kept the price down.

At 8:23 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Maybe he just survived the injury gauntlet all young pitchers go through.

At 8:31 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s the bull case. Sheffield has had injury issues of his own; that mitigates the risk.

So has Tanaka. CC's got a knee... We just just have to have them ready for October. By the way, a guy like Michael King might be able to pick up some starts if anyone's down.

At 8:48 AM, Blogger Rich said...

True, but no one is counting on CC to pitch a full season. But unlike Gardner he is is still good when he is able to play/pitch.
