This Week on the Blog

Alright, Giants had a bye, Rangers made it to .500, Knicks were constantly competitive and the Yanks may be choosing aging bandaids over prime or entering their prime players.  We'll see. Maybe starting this coming week.  Let's take a look.

Yankees: The Yanks are still looking for pitching, pitching and more pitching according to all reports.  They are involved with Cleveland on Kluber and Carrasco and in on Paxton with Seattle.  They've explored Paxton before. And they've been rumored to be interested in Corbin before, too. I'd rather they trade for Kluber (if it makes any sense at all ) and re-sign Happ, neither of which would cost them a draft pick.  Corbin would.  And Happ is probably pretty similar for less dough and fewer years.  As per trades, I'm okay with moving Frazier and Sheffield and some of the other over 20's. But I'd only move them for a big return and only move Florial for a superstar level player, who may or may not be available. What I don't want them to do is trade guys from the last 2 drafts or IFA periods because I think Cabello, Salinas and Perierra might all be better than Florial. We'll see what happens.

Giants: The Giants today cut Patrick Omameh, which probably guarantees them a 4th or 5th round comp pick. He had been playing LG with the Jags and had only played RG as a rookie. He couldn't pick it back up, and though he was a bad signing, cutting bait is smart, and allowed the Giants to re-sign Quadree, the return guy they cut when they activated RJ McIntosh.  Plus, they wouldn't have cut Omameh if they didn't prefer what Jamon Brown is showing them. So they may have helpe their OL (Brown), their Return game (Quadree), their pass rush (RJ) and their draft (comp pick).  Not bad in the midst of another terrible season.

Rangers: The Rangers are now about to start another game, and are now 7-7-2 and showing a competitive drive we didn't see much last year, but also a propensity to give up late game tying goals.  Pionk has made some Bobby Orrish plays on O, but can also get burned on D.  Needs to pick it up, but there's something there.  They are  about to play the Blue Jackets, and that will change one of the three numbers. Let's see if they can overcome the late goal phenomenon.  They are playing hard and developing kids and that's all that really matters now.  They have to get Chytil away from McCleod - who I think is out now, so maybe Fil will start lighting it up.

Knicks: The Knicks lost today against a strong Toronto team, but they were competitive into the forth. Also, Kevin Knox had 12 points in 24 mintues and made some nice shots. Like the young Rangers, they are competing every night.  Also, Enes Kanter is getting a double-double off the bench every night. And Hardaway is proving himself to be a real scorer now that he's taking fewer bad shots. Mudiay also had 12 today and seems to have knocked Trey Burke out of the rotation for the time being. Different guys are contributing during different games, outside of THjr and Kanter, and that's not a terrible sign.  The consistency will come with guys like Frank, Mitchell, Trier, and Knox.  They are fun again and that's a gift to all of us.

Alright, so there we are.  Giants play Monday, the Knicks and Rangers keep playing every time they get the chance, and the Yanks could make a deal at any given moment.  Have great one!

I want Eovaldi. There are warning signs that this could be an awful offseason.

At 7:39 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Eovaldi who has already had TJS 2X and was abused in the playoffs?

At 7:50 AM, Blogger Rich said...

His ERA per playoff round: 1.29, 2.45, 1.13

Happ truly got abused by the RS.

They need to spend big to win the WS. At this point, that looks unlikely. I doubt want to burn prospects with such a suspect offense. Unless they sign Harper there is no way I won’t trade Frazier. 2 of their 5 current OFers are terrible.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'm talking about having to start and relieve where he went 7 inning or so of relief. That's phyiscal abuse of a pitcher who has had TJS surgery 2x.

Happ had 1 bad game with irregular rest and against a team he had previously dominated, and who, we know was stealing signs.

At 11:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Happ struggled twice this season. First, when the trade rumors heated up and he tried to impress other teams. Second, in the most important game of his life. And he is at an age when a decline may be the base case.

The larger point is that every off-season for the last 15+ years Cashman scrambles for SP because he can’t develop any. The result is one WS since 2003. Yet Yankee fans think he is ninja despite the overwhelmingly evidence to the contrary.

At 11:57 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The best way to compensate for his shortcomings is to use their outsized revenues to exploit a once in a very long while opportunity: two superstar FAs who are 26 and only cost money not player personnel assets.

Hal would rather his family kept the money for conspicuous consumption. And Cashman’s public comments support the reduced spending bullshit.

Eovaldi supposedly added a cutter, which might explain his performance this season. OTOH, pitchers don't typically come to the Yankees and outperform their mean, so signing him to the years he's likely to demand is risky.

If Clint Frazier ever gets healthy, I definitely see them making him the primary left fielder.

Happ, I think, is a fallback option in case the trade market doesn't develop to Cashman's liking, though they might want to hold off and see if some other options (thinking of Keuchel in particular) have trouble finding suitors. And Rich's comment on Cashman is spot on — he's never really been able to develop or put together a championship-caliber rotation. It's the biggest knock against him there is, aside from maybe the over-reliance on launch angles.

Word is the Yankees really, really, really love on Florial, so I don't see him getting moved. From Max Wildstein on Twitter: "Source says that the #Yankees are extremely high on Estevan Florial and doesn’t see him getting dealt. When I asked the source how high NYY is on him on a 1-10 scale, source said '11.'"

Also, from Dan Federico: "Wonder why the Yankees are so high on Florial? Here's a scout's take: 'So athletic. Legit 5 tool player that will all play in MLB. Future All-Star CF. He’s a patient hitter that rarely chases with plus bat speed and power to all fields. Will be an XBH machine with 20+ HR power.'"

Good. Like I said, he is the one reliever they should sign in free agency. Otherwise, trade or build from within.

Yes, not signing Machado given Didi’s injury would be a very troubling sign about the direction of this franchise and their willingness to spend. They have given four year contracts to many 32-year-olds, Tex got his 8 year contract at like 30. This is a much better opportunity in any of those

At 9:16 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Very well said Rich. It’s not like Manny is over 30. In my opinion, it’s an investment worth making. I’ve gone on record saying I would not pay Didi what he’s looking for. If Manny is signed, it gives them, more flexibility in he trade market, should they want to move Andujar. I wouldn’t personally move him. I’d be more than content with a left side of Manny and Andujar. If the defense is really that much of an issue. Move him to the Of.

At 9:21 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

That's the thing: Teix's contract went from his age 29 season to his age 36 season, which should have been his prime years. Unfortunately, injuries and the shift significantly impacted his ability to live up to the contract, but without him, they may not have won in 2009.

Machado will turn 27 next July. Look at A-Rod's first deal with Texas and pretend he never opted out. The contract was for 2001-10, and in that time, he hit .299/.394/.577/.971 with a 150 OPS+ (ages 25-34). Derek Jeter's 10-year contract ran for the same length, during which he hit .310/.380/.445/.824 with a 117 OPS+ (ages 27-36). The problem hasn't been handing out 10-year deals, it's been handing out 10-year deals to guys over the age of 30.

Jamon Brown will start at RG tonight, if he's good, our luck is back,

I think Machado will be a Yankee. Not sure I want him, and it better not be at a price we won't give to Judge.

At 10:31 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Judge will get paid. At this point I can’t say that about any other member of the possible next core, even Sevy.

At 10:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I would’ve been fine if they didn’t want to spend, but then you don’t set money on fire by signing Gardner and CC

At 10:58 AM, Blogger Rich said...

On the Knicks, I don’t care about wins and losses, but it’s becoming pretty obvious that even if you play positionless basketball, you need some players who can handle the ball and breakdown the defense as well as shoot well. They don’t have that.

I’d guess a spending spree is coming with all of the network revenue

At 12:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Short-term it may be a financial hit.

At 12:55 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I don’t necessarily want Machado/Harper if efforts are made elsewhere to improve the team both offensively and pitching-wise. My issue is complacency, aka “we won 100 games so let’s put as little effort into this as possible.” I would much rather have Trout in two years than either of those, and I would also rather have Arenado a year from now.

At 1:07 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I want them, because I don’t think you can wait on the possibility that some guys might become free agents when there’s so much revenue-sharing money going around.

And as I said Cash has never proved he can build the topping staff...in 20 years !

Hank: https://nypost.com/2018/11/14/hal-steinbrenner-machado-will-have-to-explain-troubling-comments/

It’s always about pitching every off-season and probably will be as long as Cashman remains the GM, which I think has been too long.

At 12:22 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I just caught a second of Kay. He said the wish list is Machado, a free-agent pitcher, and a trade for a pitcher and if they sign Macado they could use Andujar to trade for a pitcher. I I think that would be really stupid because his tool too unique. But I’m well aware Cashman’s limitations

At 12:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That would be his hit tool. :)

At 1:23 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The problem with this team is they don’t have a lot of good passers and they don’t have a lot of pure shooters, and virtually no one who can consistently do both.

“I want to see how it looks from a pace standpoint, from a chemistry standpoint,” Fizdale said at Wednesday’s morning shootaround at Chesapeake Arena. “I’ve said this a lot: I really do believe [Mudiay] is our best passer. He can get certain guys going in certain ways in that starting lineup, maybe get us off to a faster start from a pace standpoint. Again, that comes down with what fits each other, what players fit, what players don’t. I’m really trying to evaluate that.”

A few Yankees thoughts:
•Machado signing with the team is feeling more and more like a foregone conclusion. If they do keep Andujar — and I'm not opposed to trading him in the right deal — maybe Machado plays short until Didi returns? Or they sign/acquire a second baseman, Torres moves to short and Machado moves to third? If that's the case, I would DH Andujar, play Stanton in left primarily and see if Voit is more than just a flash in the pan. I think he's earned the opportunity to prove he isn't.

•I saw a tweet earlier that said, paraphrasing, the Yankees feel they can get Paxton from the Mariners without giving up a bunch of A-list prospects. I think that's more than fair, IMO. Paxton is good, but he's also never pitched 200 innings in a single season, so he isn't someone for whom I would trade top-tier talent.

*Speaking of dealing with the Mariners, what about Cano? Up until this offseason I was firmly against any reacquisition of him, but I've started to reconsider. Seattle almost certainly wants to be out from under that contract, and while Cano has a full NTC, he would almost certainly waive it to come back to New York. He's owed $120M for the next five years, but if the Yankees were to include a decent prospect, maybe they could convince the Mariners to pay $25M of that? It would knock is average annual value down to $19M. He could play second until Didi comes back, then move to first/DH depending on what they do with Andujar.

•I think Stanton is most valuable as the starting left fielder, as he had good defensive numbers there this past season. In fact, I'm not entirely sure why they didn't just play him there primarily.

At 7:30 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Didi could miss the season. Extending him will turn out to be a big mistake.

Cano was a great Yankee.

Agreed when he rounded the bases after he hit it over the wall.

At 1:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Oh wait that’s a joke.

I understand. You like bad players like Gardner currently is. like really good players even if they have issues.

At 7:27 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

I like players that are on short term deals like Gardner and CC that are good in the clubhouse. Gardner can spell Hicks in CF when or if he misses time and there isnt a LF'er capable on the team. He still is a very good fielder but a streaky player.

Frazier will get moved for a SP.

At 10:45 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Gray was on a "short-term deal" in that he was cost-controlled for a couple of years prior to free agency. Scherzer is currently under a long-term deal. Honest question, YF: Which player would you prefer be on the Yankees?

Gardner was streaky at one time, now he's a backup outfielder who can no longer provide good offense. I'm fine moving Frazier in the right deal, but if Gardner is the starting left fielder on opening day, something went wrong.

Machado is an elite player with some baggage attached. No evidence that he's a bad teammate, though. You live with it due to the offense and defense he provides.

At 4:38 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Trading Frazier low is not smart.

They have major offensive question marks with Sanchez, Bird, and Voit.
Didi is likely out for all or most of the season.
Trading offense makes no sense.

And if one is pitching-centric how can you possibly support a GM who has been bad at assembling a great rotation for 20 years.

They should just sign two free-agent pitchers. Why burn prospect when you don’t have to, especially with their multiple offensive question marks.
