This Week on the Blog

Okay this past week featured, no Yankees,  no Giants, more Rangers and finally the 18/19 Knicks debut.  Let's see what's up for this week.

Yankees: Cashman says the Yanks have been charged with surpassing the Red Sox. Wish we were already there, but this past season was about re-setting the tax, and it has been re-set. Their big issue seems to be starting pitching.  Let's see where they go with that. They could also always use another quality bat.

Giants: the Giants haven't made any trades yet, but trades have started around the league and they have till the end of October, and they are going nowhere.  One guy they are swapping out is Patrick Omameh, who has been ghastly at right guard.  So they're moving Greco to guard, and Pulley to starting C. That could be sort of momentous.  If Pulley can solidify C, that is one less guy they'll have to find in the offseason.  The other interesting guy in the group is Evan Brown.  And he's a C who's managed to stay on the roster all season, so far. Gotta wonder if they're teaching him guard.  We'll see. As for the QB situation, Lauletta is still running the scout team - so no move seems close.

Rangers: The Rangers are 2-4-1 and on a little point streak. They're playing Calgary later today, and we should see another honest effort as the continue to adapt to this new system.  It's too soon to see if any of these guys are future core or not, but Lias Anderson is scoring a point a game in the AHL, and Kravstov is having a fine age 18 season through 19 games.  Also K'Andre Miller has really taken to college hockey.  And they could all be future core.

Knicks: The Knicks won big on opening night and have since lost two games by a total of 4 points.  They absolutely got reffed against the Nets and should have won.  They lacked some poise against the Celtics, but showed guts by continually coming back.  Like the Rangers under Quinn, the effort that's been missing for so long is back. Unfortrunately, Kevin Knox sprained his ankle last night, and will missed the coming week, then be reevaluated.  He was eh in game one, then was pretty great in game 2.  Overally, the offense isn't giving Knox and Frank the ball enough when they are open.  And though the Knicks are finally moving their feet on D, there is some staning around on O.  I'm sure it will straighten itself out.

So there we are. The overt rebuilds are fun to watch, while the Giants' needed rebuild is still not being  overtly embraced by the FO.  After what happened last year with Eli's benching, it sort of makes sense that they are not eager to bench him again. So there we are, Rangers today, Giants and Knicks tomorrow.  Have a great one!

The half court offense does seem to be 5-5 isos. It’s not a concern to me at this point. I am a little concerned that Courtney Lee could take PT away from Trier.

I have seen more from Mayfield so far than Darnold. He has some it factor stuff.

I love that OBJ’s dad posted that video because I believe OBJ gets smeared in the media on a regular basis and the terrible owner reignited it with his out of touch comments.

I think OBJ is a legitimately fine young man, and I think the coverage of him has only shown an interest in denying that.

Having said that there is a coefficiency between QB's and their playmakers - think Aikman and his - thus how much QB would it tale to set Saquon and Odell free, and and how little has Eli shown lately?

Raiders are doing with the Giants should be doing but the dumbass owner probably won’t let them.

Rich, when I heard Copper better a first, I was like too bad our idiot owner has no idea what he’s doing, Talk about a massive overpay..

I think the OL may be worse than last year.

Shurmur isn’t a head coach.

After sleeping on it, this whole thing pisses me off even more. I wish it were otherwise, but what is the reason for optimism here? The owner is a twit and a liar, the general manager made a series of terrible signings in the off-season, the coach is thin-skinned and terrible at clock management.

They are Cleveland Browns level embarrassing, but the Browns seem to be coming around.

It’s a disgrace.

Lauletta needs to start now.

NYP
Still, this one falls on Shurmur. Bad choices all night. And, at the end, this remarkably tone-deaf defense of his team: “Did our guys not play hard? Did our guys not play to the end?”

Time was, a Giants head coach was known to say, “There are no medals for trying.” Shurmur should try putting that one on for size starting right now.

Mindless defensiveness is so unbecoming.

By the way I don’t have a problem with the two point conversion attempt.

neither did I.

A couple of things from a more hope-inspiring organization, the Knicks. Seems like starting lineup changes are coming. Tough to play Frank and Thomas in the same starting lineup because you need more offense. It seems like Thomas will give way to Vonleh or Hezonja. And Fizdale likes Dotson which is interesting because he has looked pretty good when he has played.

Eli Apple to Saints for a 4th this year and 7th in 2020 per Schefter

I like Apple, but this is a shit show. Yet another reason why starting Eli is ridiculous

So Dolan is banning his employees from appearing on WFAN because some host ripped him. I have no idea over what. I hardly listen to sports radio anymore but that’s bs. How messed up do you have to be to be born into billions (ok, his dad made the money after he was born) and be so easily offended?

At 10:51 AM, Blogger Rich said...

There is an incongruity here. They cut Flowers and now dumped Apple. That’s two very high very recent picks with nothing to show for it. Yet the owner wanted Gettleman because he (apart from agreeing to the Eli scam on the fans) wouldn’t disrupt the old boys networks they have in place in the FO. which the owner thinks is largely fine. These moves tend to indicate that’s false. They really need up top to bottom cleanse.

Rich, in regards to Dolan, Maggie Gray went on a rant about a song he wrote earlier in the summer. Last week she gave some forced half way apology. Francesa chimed in yesterday, saying she’s wrong, but Dolan was wrong for not accepting the apology. And of course Mr. Jealousy Esiason went off on Francesa. I just happen to hear all this dropping off and picks up my daughter from school. It’s totally unlistenable, you are missing anything.

You aren’t missing anything

Tough Knick loss, but we expected those. Dotson looks really good though, and Hezonja shows signs.

At 1:12 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I like the idea of starting Dotson and putting Frank at the point. I hope Fiz that way because I think Frank’s offensive limitations make the point the best position for him.

If you’re going to suggest trading Greg Bird now you are an idiot. Yiu don’t give away deeply discounted assets unless you’re desperate and they aren’t, or at least shouldn’t be.

It would depend on the return, obviously, but unless it’s worthwhile they’re better off having him start in AAA and trying to work with him to rediscover his swing.

The question with Ellsbury is this: is it worth it to trade him and eat some salary or to keep him and collect insurance money from the inevitable injuries?

At 9:55 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Mike What would you consider a worthwhile return on Bird now and what would do you think the return would have been prior to the season?

I my opinion his value has gone down 50%. I would hold.

I don’t think trading Ellsbury sheds much salary. Maybe 2 million a year? The reason to have kept him is that insurance is paid for while he has been injured. That’s probably the best they could hope for at this point.

This is was posted elsewhere and it is pretty much what some of us have been saying:

Is JD trolling the Yankees and more importantly does he have a point? ““The pitch dictates what we’re going to do,” said Martinez, who hit .330 with 43 home runs this season. “We’re not up there forcing balls in the air. I feel like it’s the common mistake with hitters these days, and I think it’s something we all talk about and we have a really good understanding of it. We kind of think we’re hitters before sluggers.”

If the D-backs were to take Bird in a package for Goldschmidt instead of a different prospect that may prove useful going forward, I’d be fine with it. Otherwise, I agree it’s best he regain value.

Don’t think JD is trolling the Yankees as much as commenting on their approach. I think it’s the correct one, too.

At 12:36 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Oh yeah he’s not trolling, it was sarcasm I believe, but I think it points to the fact that the Yankees apply analytics way too mechanistically.

At 3:06 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I love it And the best part is it can be changed at any time.

David Fizdale has overhauled the lineup. Here it is for tonight against the Warriors: Mitchell Robinson at center, Noah Vonleh at power forward, Damyean Dotson at small forward, Tim Hardaway at shooting guard and Frank Ntilikina point guard.
