This Week on the Blog

Here, hopefully endeth one of the worst sports weeks in the history of this blog.  The Yanks were eliminated by their mortal enemy, the Giants lost 2 games, the Rangers won an OT game, but lost two others, today by way of the ref, and the Knicks lost their last 2 preseason games and blew 6M in cap space by cutting and stretching Noah, now.  This week can only get better, right? Let's take a look.

Yankees: the Yanks, yesterday, announced that Didi needs TJS and their entire coaching staff is coming back. Neither of these things are good, but the coaching staff coming back intact is horrible news. The pitching coaches are atrocious.  Look at Gray, look at Sevy, look at the long stretches of wildness from both Betances and Chapman over the last two years. Also, yesterday it was confirmed that Sevy has been tipping pitches during the second half of the season. So, if they were aware of it, why wasn't it fixed?  Can they even be counted on to fix it?  It's not worth finding out, but they're gonna.  I think the proper move was to promote Danny Borrell to MLB pitching coach. Likewise, they didn't grind enough under Marcus Thames.  They did in April/May, but then stopped. That bears more examination than they could have given it between Tuesday and Friday.  I'm sure we'll have more to talk about between now and April, but they are starting things off with a very bad decision.

Giants: Two things are clear -- the Giants were not quick fixable, but they did take the best player in the draft.  They still need to rebuild the OL, and add more playmakers to the D.  The trade deadline is October 30th or 31st, and they should be sellers. They need more picks and more young players with upside. Eli looks like toast and let's hope they give Lauletta a chance before they're forced to take a QB with next year's high first rounder.   I doubt they'll fire the coaching staff a second year in a row, but they need a new plan.  And they should start at the deadline.

Rangers: the Rangers just lost their 4th game - out of 5 - this season because they refs called a penalty on Namestikov when he was the player who'd been fouled, giving Edmonton a power play and the go ahead goal.  The Rangers are playing hard, though, and we knew what this year was going to be.  Speaking of that, K'Andre Miller scored a goal in his first game for Wisconsin last night. It was a laser. So that's great news. He has the chance to give the Rangers another unicorn.

Knicks: The Knicks weren't able to buy out Noah, so they cut him today, using the stretch provision now, instead of later and losing 6M in space in the meantime.  Seems inefficient, and that's not what we want to see from any of these rebuilds.  We should see the final cuts in the next day or so and the regular season will start this week.  Speaking of inefficiency, Kevin Knox has been missing a lot of shots, especially at the Garden.  But, you can see him really focusing on D, and trying to block shots, so it could be a matter of a step back to move forward.  He still does enough amazing stuff to keep the long term hopes up.

So, here's hoping that this new week will be a better week for our teams and all of us.  Thanks for reading.

Cashman has lost his objectivity. There is no other explanation for his indifference to these red flags, and Hal is not a guy who is willing to get into the baseball weeds. This could mark the beginning of a decline if they don’t go back to outspending their mistakes. I am one of the few fans who doesn’t mind the HalCap AS LONG AS they are really well run, and there is now ample reason to believe they are merely run decently, not great, under Cashman.

I hate the Noah cave. That’s what it is. Interesting that Trier was on the cover of the NYT Magazine at 13 in 2009 as a basketball prodigy.

The Giants are now the worst run team that we root for, by far, because Mara is so out of touch with reality, and apparently, he isn’t very bright.

Oh, and yes Barkley seems like the best player n the last draft, but in a QB league the weight assigned to that position can make it reasonable to draft a lesser ranked player at QB higher, imo.

Now, if the master plan is to tank to get a QB at the top of the next draft then that’s pretty ninja.

There is another potential problem and that is whether or not OBJ truly understands the multi-year aspect of any return to being good. From a distance, it appears to me that he doesn’t.

I also think Shurmur was an awful choice given their issues. One thing Cashman and Boone never do is talk down to the media even though many are dumb. Shurmur does it all the time. It makes him look small. The way to parry stupid questions is with humor.

Cashman was surprisingly candid regarding Gray. Glad to see he’s not doubling down on his mistake. It seems to me that they will spend to cover their mistakes. Why else reset the luxury tax? The hope here is they spend prudently.

Mara has made the Giants he laughingstock of the NFL. His choices or lack there of, have set the franchise back years. If the plan reall was to stink again this year and get Herbert, then perhaps we look at things differently. What’s inexcusable is how they let both lines deteriorate, without proper rebuilding. This has to be Eli’s last season, let’s hope they send him off properly.

Knicks seem to have a plan. I was very happy with Fizdale as the hire, as I wanted him the day he was fired. Love how he let Ewing, and soon to be Clyde speak to the team. Changing the culture, and perception of the team, will inherently make players that would never give you the time of day, change their thinking about wanting to play here.

I didn't believe in the top of this past QB class, and I saw a ton of most of them. Barkley was the best player in the draft by a ton. Now, QB taken would have cost as much cap, but had to sit behind Eli this year. Which would have been insanity, but that's how it would have worked. And the OL which will dictate success or failure with the collected playmakers, is still only half baked. And there looks to be some pretty nice QB talent at the top of this coming draft -- if Lauletta doesn't prove they should look elsewhere, which I think he can. He's accurate and mobile.

Let's hope they can make some good trades and waiver claims as we lose another season.

Per the Yanks, they went from 1 win away from the WS last year, to 5 wins away this year. I think they are factoring the season of injuries into the coaching calculus. Judge, Sanchez and Bird were not what they were last year, and Severino was better until he was worse. We are never going to win with sub-par seasons from those guys, and then you throw in a down year for Stanton, Gardy and some others. We supposedly have a great clubhouse, so we'll see. I think Corbyn will be a Yankee. Not sure Happ will. We have some tradeable parts.

So Phil Jackson’s former (?) gf Is implying that Steve Mills undermined Phil Jackson, backstabbed him really, but isn’t the real problem trying to force the outdated triangle on players whi weren’t suited to run it, and then the stupid Rose, Lee, and Noah moves? And of course, winning a few more games that cost them Towns, something they have done all too often during this long, long period of suckiness.

At 10:53 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't know that the triangle outdated - or that Melo - who refused to play it, was. Remember as recently as Kobe that offense had always made superstars out of wing players. Melo had been one... Some colleges still use it. It will come back the next time there's an MJ or a Kobe. Btw, may the great Tex Winters rest in peace.

Mahomes is awesome.

Simms confirms the obvious:
“The one thing I will say about all of this in this whole discussion. It goes back to the owner, John Mara. He was the one who told Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur he’s your quarterback, make it happen, spend the money. They went out to support him and right now they’re looking at one of the worst seasons in Giants history.”

So he goes from being willing to bench him and end his streak to forcing him on the new regime. He is a moron.

At 5:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s so fucking infuriating.

At 5:38 AM, Blogger Rich said...

And if as Paul Schwartz speculates Lauletta will get a shot late in the season, that is not going to show them whether or not they need to draft a quarterback; they will have to draft a quarterback at one

At 8:36 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If Lauletta gets 6 or so games and proves his escapablitly, accuracy and decision making, that should be enough sample size.

At 9:24 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The NYK picked up Frank’s 3rd year option. I like the way Fizdale is using him as a combo guard. He can defend multiple positions, and has looked better offensively. He probably needs at least two more seasons to fully develop. He just needs to work on his outside shot and understand when to take it to the hole. But you can see he is upping his skill level.

At 9:26 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I like Frank, too, and think we are better with him on the floor, even if he's not playing a Michael Porter type PG role.

Pretty decent write-up by Axisa on Bird.

This is not his base case, but I have to admit I don’t remember this guy:

Remember Allen Craig? Craig put up a .312/.364/.500 (139 wRC+) batting line in nearly 1,300 plate appearances from 2011-13, then he suffered an ankle injury in 2014 and was just done. Like done done. Hasn’t played in the big league since 2015 and didn’t even hit in Triple-A pitching from 2015-17. Craig lost that explosiveness in his lower half after the injury and just couldn’t hit any more. He didn’t have a good base underneath him. His swing was all arms. I worry about that with Bird.

Kyle Lauletta - the QB in this draft class I want to see play more than any other, especially in that specific passing game/system that Pat Shurmur will install. I think it could be an absolutely perfect match. #Giants

Rich, what Riddick said, I have been thinking all along. Big Lauletta fan.

At 4:56 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s why they need to start him ASAP. If they are going to pass on a QB with a top 5 pick yet again they need to play him while the games still mathematically matter. So get as much info as possible. The risk of being wrong is unacceptably high.

At 5:27 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Hopefully soon. The risk of being wrong is a 4th round pick. The QB market is changing as the game is. I think Lauletta is a lot like Garapolo. Maybe even better upside. So when you get a guy like that, in the 4th, there's virtually no risk and all upside. And if he becomes the starter - the 2018 draft will go down in history, because Saquon, Hernandez, Hill and Carter are all STUDS.

Schwartz says they should trade for Brissett

At 5:57 PM, Blogger Rich said...

To me the risk is foregoing your best chance to avoid QB hell for years.

At 8:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They may already have their new QB. They'll find out. If he starts around game 10 and they start winning, we should still have a pretty good first round pick, but maybe not high enough to get Herbert, but I'm sure they'll be able to draft competition in 2 or again in 4, we don't have a 3 because we used it on Beal. That said, I think we'll have more picks by then.

At 7:13 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s why the dual mandate that Gettleman has been given is a risk to maximize their future. Just lose. But the owner is what he is and it sucks.

I too thought 30 million for 3 Years Was Way too low for Hicks:

I agree with RAB. The only way Hicks is cheaper after next year is if he’s hurt, which is possible but I’d still like to lock him up.

Hicks will be a free agent next offseason and, as noted earlier, players who sign extensions at this service time level usually get free agent contracts. There’s no more discount. The contract comparables for Hicks are pretty straightforward. He figures to seek Dexter Fowler (five years, $82.5M) and Lorenzo Cain (five years, $80M) money. And you know what? I’d give it to him. That’s the going rate for a comfortably above-average center fielder.

Mara has spoken 😂

At 10:02 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Something like 4 of our top 10 prospects are CF's. I'd rather let Hicks go as soon as Florial or one of the other is within hailing distance.

Then they showed trade him now. He’s worth more than compensatory picks.

Honestly, I don’t care much about “hustle,” but if it’s one or the other, I would rather have Harper. If Andujar doesn’t show the necessary improvement at third next year, you could always sign Arenado after the 2019 season.

At 2:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

In a vacuum I agree, but the problem is positional need. If they sign one of them, I’ll be happy.

At 2:35 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Rich, whom do you prefer Machado or Harper? My guess is they will get Corbin plus one of those two, and make a unexpected trade.

Michael
Since I have no power, I have no preference. And really, I am more interested in what can they do get Sanchez and Bird untracked.

At 4:42 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Bird just seems snakebit with the injury bug which while young is very troublesome. I wonder they could bring someone from the outside to he,p Sanchez, doesn’t seem they have an in house solution.

Fun Knicks game.

At 6:07 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So Cashman thinks Boone deserves As across the board and Severino was tipping his pitches. Good GM, not great. They are run a million times better than the Giants but could be run better.

At 7:22 PM, Blogger Rich said...

We can call it luck or whatever but the RS are and have played at a higher level more often than the Yankees for most of the last 17 or 18 years. The Yankees need to up their game short- and long-term.

At 9:55 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think our minors are much better than Boaton's, so mid term, I think we'll have a big advantage. Remember they spent more than we did this year.

At 3:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

This year I get. But this is really since 2001. 3, hopefully not 4, championships to 1. Unacceptable.

At 3:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

What gets me most now is the bizarre attitude by Cashman that Boone gets all A’s. That’s laughable and doesn’t inspire confidence. Then add in no coaching changes. Ass covering is unbecoming.

At 10:22 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So Cashy told F’cessa that pitching will be their offseason focus, which is his 20 year weakness and the primary reason they don’t win championships anymore.
