Yanks Bring Back Gardy for 1/7.5

The Yanks have announced that they are bringing back Brett Gardner for 1 year and 7.5M.  That's less than the 12.5 he'd be due had they picked up his option.  But did they also have to give him the 2M to buy out his option, making the deal really 9.5M or is the 2M part of the new 7.5M.  In either event, he looked pretty shot this past year, but, having said that, he is 100% Yankee through and through and the new deal is fine.

Who the heck was giving him more than $4-5M? I love the guy and don’t mind him being back necessarily, as long as it’s as a bench player, but if this is the reason Harper “doesn’t fit the budget” it tells you all you need to know about how cheap ownership is.

Sweeny Murti: “Gardner signed for $7.5 million for 2019. That’s $5 mil less than his option would have been.

Yankees love his defense, still consider him elite defender in LF. While his offensive drop off was troubling, $7.5M is a good deal for an everyday outfielder.”

Think I’ll be tuning out next year. That they think he’s an “everyday outfielder” tells me all I need to know about this team’s priorities, because it certainly ain’t winning.

If he is a true reserve OF (150ish AB) and they are willing to spend without much limitation, fine. If both conditions are not met, I hate it.

Fleshing that out: Without Didi, with Sanchez and Bird offensive question marks, and really so is Voit; Gardner is near done. They still need a big bat or two. This seems to reflect complacency.

To be clear, I am perfectly fine with them passing on both Harper and Machado if the plan is to sign Trout after the 2020 season and they go all in on trying to improve the rotation and fix their offensive approach with RISP. But if this is just Hal being cheap, then I’m relegating the Yankees to a passing hobby.

So now Macado or Harper are necessities.

They can’t count on Trout.

I’ll take the opposite tact, and say they don’t pass on both, and get at least one. I view Gardy being signed, as insurance for Frazier. I just can’t see them resetting the luxury tax to pocket the money, it will not sit well with the fan base . Especially since Boston won with the highest payroll, I think Hal will approve the higher spending.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’m not one of these “Yankees ownership/management are stupid,” but Gardner is not an everyday player, and he can’t be treated as such.

Not stupid at all. But I have to be honest and I don’t see decisions on par with the RS over the last 15 years.

Here's the deal with the Sox: Dombroski made two good decisions, which were trading for Chris Sale and signing JD Martinez to a reasonable deal. But much of their success this season can be attributed to Cherington, who I think was actually underrated as a GM. I don't think Dombrowski is the genius people made him out to be. They have no farm, and that's gonna come back to bite them in the next several years.

Still, John Henry looks like he's willing to spend when it means giving his team a chance to be great. That's more than we can say about Hal Steinbrenner.

They won 4 WS to the Yankees 1. When the owner says the WS is their yearly goal that’s s very fair metric to assess comparative success.

At 4:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Oh, no doubt, and Hal needs to stop paying lip service to that goal unless he’s willing to put his money where his mouth is. (BTW, I actually group 2000 with 2009, but even so, that’s two titles this century to Boston’s four.)

At 6:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Even 2009 was with the last core. Cashman’s true success comes when his core wins WS.

You cannot reasonably give Gardner this much unless money is no object overall.

Axisa thinks this precludes signing Harper. Sadly, I agree. The more I think about it the more I don’t like the signing. He’s now a below average platoon only hitter.

I think the team did play up to its demonstrated abilities but maybe not it’s ultimate potential. They need to spend money in order to hedge the variance.

Kershaw extended.

I dislike the Gardner deal more every day. It’s a total waste. They might as will blow some money on CC too although I thought he made more sense than Gardner.

I think it's foolish to think the the Yanks singing Gardy for 7.5 will stop them from doing anything. They kept Boone and Boone loves making late game defensive replacements and Hicks is hurt a few times a year.

Cleveland will make Kluber and Carrasco available.

Kluber can be had for Sheffield +

At 6:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

See if they can get him for the guys they sent the Yankees in exchange for Miller.

At 6:23 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s still money that could be more productively used.

Agreed on Gardner. He is also a leader ok the clubhouse and a fine defensive outfield dr who saved many runs last year.

I want to get Happ locked up at a discount then trade or sign another SP.

At 7:48 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Having both Gardner and Ellsbury on the roster is laughably dumb.

I don’t want Happ. He was shaking like a leaf in the playoffs.

Gardner 2nd half: .209 .288 .316 .604

That says it all. He’s toast and could decline further.

At 7:57 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Of course, he wil have a good couple of weeks here and there and people will feel vindicated.

As I have said, it was one thing to pretend that Jeter was still good when he wasn’t. That should never happen again with another massively declining player. But the lesson has not been learned.

It's foolish to include Garner and Ellsbury in the same sentence. Ellsbury hasn't played in so long.

It's a 1 year deal instead of giving someone like McCutchen 3 or 4 years or Harper 10.
