Yanks 40 Man Day

By 8pm EST all teams in baseball have to set their 40 man rosters in preparation for the annual Rule 5 draft which takes place on the final day of the Winter Meetings. Yanks traded Sheffield off the 40 yesterday, but Paxton took his spot. Swanson would have had to be protected today, but now he's a Mariner.  Still the Yanks wil have to add guys, and might even need to make additional room.

In the past, the Yanks have generally saved the kids they have high hopes for and gambled on some advanced prospects they like or are too far away from the majors for other teams to take a keep all season. This burned them a few years ago when San Diegoe took C Luis Torrens and didn't return him.  The Yanks learned a lesson and protected Johnny Lasagna last year.  Let's hope they are equally careful, and lucky today.

I heard Paxton on the radio. He attributes his increased K rates to learning how to pitch,; he attributes is higher HR/FB rates to mental mistakes: he was not asked about his declining GB rates.

He’s working with an advanced trainer to try to maintain his health and a nutritionist.

Some people are pushing the idea that Happ demonstrated he can handle New York pressure and Sonny Gray didn’t. I think people forget that Sonny Gray actually pitched very well when he first got here but got horrible run support. Things snowballed overtime. Happ spit the bit in the biggest game of his life against Boston.

Despite being wrong about that, Sherman still makes some interesting overall points:

I want them to get Corbin, even though he costs a pick. He's well younger than Happ, and could be a long time fixture. His K-rate is also excellent, and he's a Yankee fan.
