So now we know. I think Tex signed on December 22nd or 23rd, I remember because my Dad was flying into Burbank that day and it happened while he was en route. Let's hope this tips the plan.
@Ken_Rosenthal #Astros closing in on free-agent outfielder Michael Brantley, sources tell The Athletic. Rival executives expect deal to be in two-year, $32M range.
This would have made so much more sense for the Yankees than Gardner, especially if they don't sign Harper. Oh well.
The Yanks clearly learned from the past when it comes to FA pitcher signings and stray away from long term deals in that area. This is evident in that the last FA pitcher they signed to a multi-year deal was in 09 with Burnett (Tanaka was not a FA).
Corbin has a lot of risk, it's not like he's been dominant outside of 1 season. I don't think they view Machado / Harper anywhere near the same light as Corbin.
The problem is that Corbin would be cheaper than acquiring say Kluber because it’s only money which they have plenty of, and having that other potentially dominant pitcher maybe the only way they win their second World Series in almost 20 years.
The mistake wasn't passing on Corbin for six years, the mistake was not even making a run at Eovaldi for four. Let's assume the worst and say you get him for four years and he stinks it up for the first year and a half. Burnett is actually a good example in that case — you'd simply ship him off to some team that thinks they can get him back on track outside of the NYC atmosphere. Or you drive up the price on the Red Sox and force them to five years or more.
As it stands, it's the same rotation, except you exchange Gray with Paxton. That's a good exchange, and the trade was a good one because Justus Sheffield had likely peaked in terms of prospect value, but as a whole the rotation hasn't been significantly upgraded. If they don't acquire another No. 1/2 type, then they're going to have to depend on a farm system whose most MLB-ready arms are an unknown in Michael King and a guy in Jonathan Loaisiga who shows top-of-the-rotation potential but has never been able to stay healthy. And that's not getting into the bigger-picture fact that Severino is the one pitcher in like a decade they've developed into a front-line starter.
Without a truly dominant rotation, the best bet is to load up on offense. The good news is there are two generational-type talents that can be had for just money. The bad news is the team is owned by someone who may not even be willing to spend on one of them, let alone both.
He still has time, which is why I’m wanting to refrain from being too harsh, especially when he has an ownership group that lacks the passion to win of their predecessor.
If they could fix the first-round drafting issue (aside from Judge who have they developed from the first round in like 20 years?) it would go a long way.
@YankeesWFAN: Manny Machado and the Yankees have been in a mutual administration society for years.
So to me this meeting is less about salesmanship than it is making sure both sides can live with each other if/when the numbers match up. Would be true even without Johnny Hustle remark.
Cashman still has very ample resources at his disposal. He has a near great situation, sufficient to have won some championships without the unbelievable core he inherited.
Don’t get me wrong, the Yankees are a well-run team and they stands in sharp contrast to the worst run team in NY that I root for, the NYG, who are a pure shit show.
Breaking: MLB has reached a historic agreement with the Cuban baseball federation to allow players to be posted and join MLB teams. Still needs govt approval.
@JonHeyman: Yankees contingent dined with Manny Machado, his wife and agent tonight in Manhattan. Yanks are interested and in the game, along with Chisox and Phillies. Tour was believed to be those 3 teams, no mysteries.
@MStrooo6: Machado is going to the Yankees. Yankees go out and get everyone. Red Sox are lethal. Rays are dangerous. Can never sleep on the Orioles. I’m going to the gym. Gonna be in my zone all year. Excited to compete in the best division in baseball! #ALEast
@MStrooo6: Just my opinion on Manny going to the Yankees. No insider info. Preparing to see Judge, Harper, Machado, Stanton, Sanchez, Hicks, Gleyber, etc. all in the same lineup...then go pitch against Mookie, JD, Bogaerts, Devers, Bradley, etc. in my next start! Lol #readyforitall
The Phillies and Yankees are among the "lead teams" for free-agent southpaw Zach Britton, reports Jon Heyman of Fancred. Both clubs have been seeking bullpen help since the start of the offseason. Britton, who turns 31 on Saturday, finished 2018 with the Yankees and had a 3.10 ERA in 40 2/3 total innings this past season after returning from offseason Achilles surgery.

Bridwell DFA’d. Why is AJ Cole on the roster?
He's probably just there till they add someone else.
Nice

I was hoping they would do that.
Meaning the Yanks bonusing CC, not the Brantley deal.

Good hire! I wonder if A-Rod will be at the meeting?
The way I look at it it’s all about money. Either Hal wants to spend or he doesn’t. Who knows? I’m a little skeptical after the Corbin bs.

That’s reasonable but so is their failure to sign either.
You are correct. The only time they won in this millennium is when they spent really big.
It’s Cashman’s legacy. Better than many but not great.

Meeting is over after 90. Minutes.

Sweeney once said they would sign Harper.

Not a sure thing unless ...

The Dodger trade probably sets up their pursuit of Harper.

Could also set up a situation where the Yankees sign Harper and send them Stanton.
