The Winter Nothings End

The Rule 5 just ended the the Yanks and other teams are heading home after massively uneventful Winter Meetings. Last year, they traded for Giancarlo Stanton, this year they may or may not be at the goal line with JA Happ, redux. Btw, that could be delayed because the Yanks still have a full 40 man roster. Thus, at some point, and they don't seem to be in any rush, they'll have to make a trade or DFA someone before they can announce Happ.

And they are getting very close ($7) to the tax threshold ($206) and will have to exceed it for top relievers and a SS/2B even if they commit deep-pocketed mega revenue team malpractice by not signing Harper and/or Machado. And axing Gray’s $9 won’t be enough to offset this spending.

If they want to beat Boston they have to go way above $206. I agree with Phil, that they are biding their time for something. Paxton and keeping Happ isnt going to move them past Boston.

It seems that if they are willing to spend enough Machado wants to play here, maybe Harper too. So as much is I believe Cashman is overrated, large expenditures are solely. on the owner.

Now, Hal likes to say they shouldn’t have to spend over the threshold to win, and in some sense that’s true, but every general rule has exceptions and the exception is that his main competitor spends significantly more.

It’s like people focusing on the mats new GM changing things. Overlooks the major point. If the Wilpon‘s are willing to spend another hundred million per year any GM is going to look good at least the near term.

Their biggest issue last year was health, and Sevy's mysterious slump. I do think they are waiting on something big...

Cashman after suggesting for weeks that Harper didn’t fit, came out and said as much here in Las Vegas. But Cashman seemed to massage those words the very next day, telling New York writers in response to Boras’ suggestion that things can change: “I don’t have any reaction other than to say we try to promote that we are a progressive and open-minded operation and that every day is different, that we are prepared to pivot and react if things change … if the rosters adjust. If something doesn’t make sense today, it doesn’t mean that it won’t make sense tomorrow. All I can tell you is where our current focuses are. But at the same time, we’re a fully operational death star.”

I have a feeling ownership actually is going to spend, especially with so much coming off the books in the next couple of seasons. I also think just because they have/will add long-term deals doesn’t mean those players will end their careers as Yankees.

Can you imagine a buzz if they sign both Machado and Harper? I think there’s less than zero chance of that happening, but they should think about it.

Why would Cash say the Yanks are a fully operational Death Star if he wasn't going to prove it?

He said a lot of stuff about Corbin that made it reasonable to think they would sign him.

To this point, no one is giving discounts and they want it known that they are holding the line. But if they’re willing to actually pay market value then they will get probably one of those guys.

I think the one thing that let them pass on Corbin at a #1 salary for a 2 or 3, was that they got Paxton. I think Paxton will be a better pitcher going forward, and getting him meant they didn't have to overpay Corbin. Now Corbin had talked about the Yanks a lot, going back to last year. Had he wanted to be a Yankee, he could have been.

Now, I think we're going to see a union uprising because I think both Manny and Harper want to be Yankees, and have made it clear since they were in High School, and the Yanks will give them a chance to be Yankees.

I think they needed both to have a chance to finally have a dominant rotation.

MLB will be more opposed than the MLBPA. To this point, Hal has not wanted to alienate the MLB power structure.

The Yankees acquired Single-A outfielder Tyler Hill from the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations as they try to add more speed to the organization.

The Yankees announced the deal on Friday after Hill was selected in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft Thursday at the winter meetings in Las Vegas by the Tigers from the Red Sox organization.

We still haven't made room on the 40 for Happ.
