Yanks Sign 2B/3B DJ LeMahieu
Yanks have probably taken themelves out of the Manny Machado sweepstakes by signing DJ LeMahieu to a 2 year and 24 million dollar deal. This is ponderous. The man has won 3 gold gloves, a batting title at age 27, and been an all star. But he is also, 30, and in every year but his age 27 year, he's been a below average major league hitter. Also, he plays 2B, 3B and 1B, not short, so he's no replacement for Didi and when he does play one of the positions he can play, a young player will sit. Ponderous, and sick money for this particular guy.

This guy, CC and Gardner are basically setting money on fire. Add in Happ after getting buried by the RS in the playoffs and it’s just a shit offseason.
Good luck beating Boston, I hope Hal enjoys another first round exit.
I guess he's a good utility player... Kind of shocked Rich doesn't like him considering he isn't a big SO guy.
I never knew Curry was so full of shit:
A few days ago:
Curry When Cashman was asked if Tulowitzki signing takes the Yankees out of the pursuit of Machado, he said, "I can't say what it would take us out of, but we're re going into this w/ a commitment level to try Troy Tulowitzki at SS." Me: I still think Yanks are very much in on Machado

Today
In November, I asked Cashman if the Yankees would make "splashy moves" this off-season and he said they would rather make smart and savvy moves. That answer and additional reporting is why I've always thought a marriage between Machado and the Yankees was unlikely.
I think you're using a false 1 game standard on different rest against Happ and I expect him to win a lot.
Fully operational Death Star? Please they are lucky to be a Fully Operational Winnebago(Eagle 5) of Spaceballs.
Give me Bryce Harper please.
I agree with that.
Happ is the least of it. but if one guy, albeit with risk, was likely to alter their ongoing weakness (SP) it was Corbin.
Harper is a safer bet to be sure.
Only shot of Machado would now seem to be trading Andujar for pitching.. I agree with the Harper sentiments. Tulo/Gardy/DJ all seem like a waste of money. They went over the luxury tax for them???
I think it’s about the money so I think they have to move substantial salary to be interested in a big-name.
Tulo was at the minimum so not a waste money wise.
I think Paxton is better than Corbin, and that alters the trajectory. I think he's being really underrated.
Hendry was running the Cubs when they drafted LeMahieu.
Phil, I agree with you on Paxton. I've gotten the MLB package for the last number of years, and would watch many of his starts. The only reason people don't know more about him is because where he plays.
I think they needed both.
Rich, good point on Tulo a minimum money wise. I'll give Dan Clark credit, he refuses to back off his claims.. My guess is if they didnt have Ellsbury on the books this whole money thing would be a non-issue. It should be a non issue anyway.....
Fangraphs sees LeMahiue as a 15M per guy.
I think they have a trade or two coming.
Another thing I don’t like is putting all the blame on Sonny Gray and not having Rothschild sharing it. Their blindness toward his pitching coach skills is curious.
I've wanted to get rid of Rothschild for years.

For the record, here on Jan. 11 at 2:59p, I’m not convinced the Yankees are out of the Bryce Harper sweepstakes.
Well at least isn’t Dan Clark
Sevy is headed to arbitration.
AJ Cole traded to Cleveland on waivers.
What’s the difference in offers between Sev and the Hal’s? Like 20% of Gardner’s awful contract?
Yanks giving Betances 7.125. Stilll a bargain. FA next year.
FWIW from Rosenthal
I’ll believe the Yankees are out on Manny Machado when I see him wearing another team’s jersey at his introductory news conference.
This is not to say the Yankees are “in” on Machado, not after reaching agreement on Friday with free-agent second baseman DJ LeMahieu on a two-year, $24 million contract.
But I’m guessing the Yankees will follow their usual practice. Stay in contact with Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano. Wait for the market to fully form. Then decide at the end if they are willing to meet Machado’s price.
Rosenthal, also replied to one of his user questions saying why did they bother going under he tax to begin with if they are just going over again anyway? He thinks if they are it should be for one of the big two.
Here's what I think that I was gonna put in tomorrow's post for the week: they might have a trade they can make involving Andujar and Gray if Machado signs, perhaps with Cleveland. Anyway, this makes no sense so far, so I hope something more will change.
I agree Phil. This makes no sense. These moves will not help them beat Boston. Beyond Paxton and to a degree Britton, they are stop gap moves, not for the long term..
Agree with the trade thoughts involving Andujar and Gray for SP. Perhaps Torres is dealt but I hope not.
Yanks need an ace more than a luxury item like Machado who is another RH bat.
They passed on the potential ace in Corbin. Seems pretty clear they don’t care about being great. Good enough is enough.
@jaysonst: Ken raises a question we should always ask at times like this. Are the Yankees ever really out of the mix on a player like Manny Machado? https://twitter.com/theathleticmlb/status/1083919145471758336
AJ Cole Claimed off Waivers..I don't think traded
I also hate that they are playing hardball with Sev after pissing away money so much money on players who are done or near done pretending their non-winning WS culture matters.
