Yanks Re-Sign Britton

The Yanks have re-signed Zach Britton for what looks like a 3 year, 40M deal with a 4th year option that would bring it to 50. I think this was probably the best RP on the market. Before he tore his achilles he was one of the top two or three in the game, and once or twice he was #1.  He had some good performances down the stretch for the Yanks, and was a better health bet than Andrew Miller, at this point.  Now, they can eithe add Ottavino or try someone from the farm - that is loaded with RHP's.  Good move.

If their IF defense is better, he will be better.

I imagine it will get better.

Very good move. Heyman says they are going after Ottavino as well.

Curious to see who the 40-man casualty will be. Have to think Cessa’s days are numbered if they add more pieces.

At 7:59 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think they'll make a little trade this week to loosen up the 40 for other moves.

If the season began today, here is my best guess at the 25-man roster:

C Gary Sanchez
1B Luke Voit
2B Gleyber Torres
SS Troy Tulowitzki
3B Miguel Andujar
LF Brett Gardner
CF Aaron Hicks
RF Aaron Judge
DH Giancarlo Stanton

BENCH: C Austin Romine, IF Tyler Wade, (one more)

SP: Luis Severino (R), James Paxton (L), Masahiro Tanaka (R), JA Happ (L), CC Sabathia (L)

RP: Domingo German (R) (longman), Stephen Tarpley (L), Chad Green (R), Jonathan Holder (R), Adam Ottavino (R), Zach Britton (L), Dellin Betances (R), Aroldis Chapman (L)

Notable guys on DL: SS Didi Gregorius, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, LHP Jordan Montgomery

I think Ben Heller and Greg Bird begin the season in Triple-A assuming they have options. I expect Luis Cessa to be DFA’d or traded. Also expect Sonny Gray and Tommy Kahnle to be traded as well.

*Ottavino is a mistake but I do think he eventually signs.

At 5:20 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I like the quote from Britton, where he said it’s all about winning now, and closing isn’t as important.

At 6:36 AM, Blogger Rich said...

What if Tulo exceeds all expectations and Machado is at 3B. Does Didi and his failure to walk get his job back?

At 7:45 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Britton’s contract is the third Scott Boras has done with his innovative club opt-in, player opt-out clause, following Arrieta and Kikuchi. Knowing Boras fancies himself something of a wordsmith, I asked him if he had a nickname for the clause. “Funny you should ask,” he said

I do think there's potential that DiDi ends up as the odd man out, rather and Andujar.

BP Is awesome now!! Fill in from the Farm..

At 2:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

At this point, even if the Yankees sign Machado, did Dan Clark really have the story first? Seems dubious.

At 7:20 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Nightengale

The #Yankees are either playing it coy, trying to gauge the Andujar trade market, or simply have no intention of offering Manny Machado a $200 million-plus contract. The Chicago #WhiteSox and Philadelphia #Phillies remain the most aggressive teams for the prized infielder.

At 7:37 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That would seem like Machado’s agent using Nightengale. The Yankees have created a perception that they will not overspend. At some point they may have to make a choice either overspend or pass on a player. Time will tell.

At 7:59 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The other consideration is do the Yankees really have a first baseman? Neither Voit nor Bird can reflexively be relied on, and Voit’s defense is horrible. So perhaps Andujar could be tried there. Yes, his defense may be suspect as well but the mere fact that he can play third base suggests that he would be much better than Voit

Axisa preferred Robertson and adds this on Britton:

Two, he went from a 30.2% strikeout rate and a 6.3% walk rate from 2015-16 to a 19.1% strikeout rate and a 11.8% walk rate from 2017-18. Not exactly an encouraging trend! This seems bad:

—-

I am surprised that they showed no interest in Robertson, but I do expect some positive regression to Britton’s mean.

At 3:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

YES hot stove are owners’ shills.

I agree with Axisa here:

Yankees not seriously shopping Andujar

According to Davidoff, the Yankees are not seriously shopping Miguel Andujar. It has been reported throughout the offseason that the Yankees are open to trading him. Both of those things can be true. The Yankees can be open to trading Andujar — I’m certain they’re open to trading a lot of players should the right offer come along — without actively shopping him and pushing him in trade talks.

Also, keep in mind these things can change in a hurry. If the Yankees manage to sign Machado, they could turn right around and begin to push Andujar in trade talks in an effort to address other needs. I don’t love that idea — the more high-end bats the better, and the Yankees could easily make room for Machado and Andujar on the roster — but it is a viable option. Overall, there is too much “trade Andujar” talk for my liking. He’s really good! The Yankees should be keeping really good young players, even if they are flawed.

At 7:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Andujar and Machado could end up being really similar hitters.

If this happens Hal can go fuck himself. Cashman too for all his bullshit about taxes.

Have to hope this is a Teixeira situation where they give their best offer and he ultimately decides to go with his desire to play in NYC. (Remember, Boston supposedly offered Teix more money.) If it really is closer to $200M than 300, then there's no excuse not to sign him.

At 10:25 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Baltimore offfered Tex more money and years. Tex always hated Boston for how they treated him when they trafted him as a prep.

At 11:27 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Heyman

Word is, Machado camp still seeking 300M plus. ChiSox, Phillies not believed to be close to that ask (though exact current offers aren’t known, and can change). Meanwhile, Yanks, believed to be preferred destination, have yet to make official offer. Still no word of mystery team.

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

More specifically, Machado camp still believed seeking something “north of Stanton.” (325M plus). Great player, very young for a free agent (26) and doesn’t hurt to ask. Still, very hard to see him getting there (or even close) on non-deferred, true-value deal at this point.

At 4:06 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Not looking good, based on latest rumors. I’ll give Clark credit, he still is saying Yankees. If not what a shit job by Hal and Cashman, this is a fireable offense. Sadly they would think it’s good business.

At 5:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cashman has only won championships with the inherited Core. Going cheap won’t help change that. But he still gets paid.

At 5:22 PM, Blogger Rich said...

And really it’s the opposite of a fireable offense. He has been here so long because he will do whatever ownership wants. He used to speak his mind in like 2004. He isn’t that guy anymore. He is the ultimate company man.

At 5:59 PM, Blogger Michael said...

You are right Rich,he is the ultimate company man that’s why he’s been in the job so long. Was just about to say that the Core was long in place before Cashman had any say. What has he really done.? We can bash on him all we want, but he’s just doing Hal’s bidding sadly,,,

@martinonyc: Yankees haven't been very engaged on Machado since New Years, per multiple sources, but here's the thing: It's hard to get an offer from Cashman but when he strikes he strikes quickly, aggressively. Regardless of how this looks like it's going, I'm not ready to believe its over

Wally Matthews fwiw also refuting these reports...

At 6:23 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Nobody knows anything. And the “formal offer” stuff only means they’re waiting to see what other teams are offering before making their intentions known. The real test is when that happens. If the highest bid is 8/$240M, do they even try to match that?

At 7:16 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If winning was the driving force, signing Harper and Machado at 26 with no real player personnel compensation is an offer they could not refuse.

But obviously it’s not.

Are they laying in the weeds only to make a last minute strike?

It’s possible, but it’s reasonable to be very skeptical.

At 10:57 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Harper is draft pick and international pool money comp.

At 11:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Btw, this is setting up like Arod.

At 5:17 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Their own pick?

Either way they should still sign both.

At 9:30 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Kiley McDaniel said Yanks are going to be signing Jasson Dominguez for the majority of their 2019 J2 Pool. Apparently there's 2 studs this year, him and Puason (signing with A's I believe) and then a drop. I couldn't find much on him but 2019 J2 reports probably won't be out until March.

I also am not shocked at the reports -- seems like Machado agent is leaking certain things to hopefully get the ball rolling. If you're the Yanks, why make the initial offer if the feeling is he wants to be a Yankee? Let someone set the market and then make your offer.

At 9:57 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Cash is doing his patience thing, I'd be more surprised than dissapointed in Manny isn't a Yankee.

At 10:06 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rick Down died.

At 10:38 AM, Blogger Rich said...

But how much is he authorized to spend? That’s the key.

At 11:55 AM, Blogger Rich said...

How weird is it that Heyman uses words like “try hard” to describe the White Sox on Machado. It’s about a willingness to spend by interested teams. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

At 12:29 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Agreed, but if I were the Yankees and I knew NY was his first choice, this is how I would play it. Let him come to them when the other teams have made their final pitches.

At 1:40 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I am still concerned about how RH they are, and of course the starting pitching.

At 2:44 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

This reminds me of when Matsui had to write to all the teams in the league that he wasn't only interested in the Yanks. If anyone's working hard it's Machado's agent trying to push up the prices for the Yanks.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yanks signed Greg Bird for 1.2M.

At 2:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yikes. He should pay them.

At 2:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Lowrie to the Mets is a good signing.

At 4:47 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rare for you to give up on a young player who has shown what Bird already has.

At 8:53 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Not giving up (although if Machado signs, he would have to beat out Andujar at 1B). My point is that I think that he deserves a pay.cut.

At 8:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

*Beat out from my perspective.

At 9:56 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Why the F do they need this if Machado is going to be signed?
