This Week on the Blog

Alright, this past week saw the Rangers win a couple of games, the Knicks continue to almost win some game, the Yanks beef up their pen, and the Giants lose assistant db's coach Deshea Townsend da Bears. Let's take a look at what's on the way.

Yankees: Perhaps as soon as today, the Yanks will trade Sonny Gray to the Reds, or the Giants or someone. Cincy seems to be closest.  If the Yanks get the #36 pick as part of an Reds trade, that might make them a little more likely to sign a free agent, that requires compensation. Like Bryce Harper. Anyway, the buzz about them wanting a 6th starter has been refreshed lately, so maybe something like that is coming, too.  We'll seee.

Giants: The Giants lost Deshea Townsend to the Bears and will probably add another coach, there. Though, they said they wanted to keep all the coaches, they did also meet with the ex-DC from the Jets. So they may be open to some changes along those lines. In other Giants news, they seem set up to have a lot of picks, and if this year's draft is like last year's draft, they will get multiple players and it will be a great weekend.  They already used their 3rd round pick on Sam Beal, so they're probably looking to add another one. Hopefully, there are move roster players they can trade.

Knicks: The Knicks lost a heartbreaker in London on a goaltend! Yeesh.  They do have some really good periods, but keep finding ways to lose, the 4th period rotations have been ponderous, and it really does look like they are tanking intentionally tanking. Had Mitchell Robinson, who is back, been in on the fateful goal tend, it wouldn't have happened. Ah well. they need health luck and lottery luck, and there's nothing they can do about that right now.

Rangers: The Rangers had looked sort of tank city since November, but lately, they've been playing better D in 3rd periods. They called up D Ryan Lindgren the other day, and maybe he's helping. Skjei looks a little better.  Also, MZA has been on fire, which probably means his trade return is going up.  And Chytil is looking elite again. I guess hockey development is not always linear. Whenever I see young guys flashing some games, but not others, it reminds me of Kovalev, and I get a little worried. We'll see what happens.

So there it is. Waiting on a Sonny Gray trade, and status quo everywhere else, until the trades and new hires start.  Have a great week!

Saturday: According to Heyman, the Yankees and Reds are getting closer to a trade but it’s not done yet (argh). They’re discussing two prospects and the draft pick for Gray. Cincinnati wants to keep Stephenson, so right now talks are centered around Long, the draft pick, and an unidentified second prospect. Intrigue!

I haven't heard Cleveland being involved in Sonny trade talks? I think you mean Cincy?

Heyman: Yankees, Reds are finalizing the Sonny Gray trade. infield prospect Shed Long and a draft pick are expected to go to NY, and possibly a 3rd lesser piece. Long is an excellent hitter, fair defender. Just need to cross t’s, dot i’s (ie medicals, 40-man considerations, etc.)

Long, by the way, is a lefty hitter who walks a lot. Hit .261/.353/.412 in Double-A last year. Seems like a good get. He’s 23 (turns 24 in August) so not too old, either.

Long is older than Gleyber.

And Andujar.

Sickels

6) Shed Long, 2B, Grade B/B-: Age 23, 12th round pick in 2013 from high school in Alabama; hit .261/.353/.412 with 12 homers, 57 walks, 123 strikeouts, 19 steals in 452 at-bats in Double-A; above-average power from the left side, can swipe a base despite average speed, draws walks but there’s some swing-and-miss in the profile but projects well as a secondary average hitter; average glove but good-enough if he hits as expected; ETA late 2019.

Of course, as with every prospect, Long comes with warts. He has some high-strikeout tendencies (23.6 K% in 2018), and scouts doubt his ability to stick at second base long-term, seeing a move to the outfield corners as a strong possibility. However, even if he isn’t the strongest defender, Long could provide value as a second baseman who can actually hit, as his MLB counterparts managed only a collective 93 wRC+ this past year. And while the Yankees already have a strong offensive player at the keystone in Gleyber Torres, it never hurts to have capable depth in the high minors (Long is projected to start 2019 at Triple-A). You can count me as a huge fan of this trade.

They traded something for a pitcher. That will tell us more.

What?

Heh. They WILL trade something for a starting pitcher, IMO. So will it be Long? Does his presence free up other prospects?

So I guess what I’m saying is I suspect this acquisition is a prelude to another deal.

This show bring back a better return. It may not because Cashman is dumping him.

But nothing about the Yankees offloading the disappointing right-hander has been easy. Before the trade is completed, the Reds would like to agree to an extension with Gray, who is entering the last season of his contract.

Gray is believed to be open to the extension, and the Reds’ pitching coach, Derek Johnson, being Gray’s former pitching coach at Vanderbilt will not hurt.

Since the Knicks don’t have Bird rights on Vonleh and can only give him 20% above his 1.6m if they are over the cap, it would seem to make sense to trade him.

A 72 hour negotiating window between Sonny Gray and the Reds expires tonight... if no deal is reached, the Yankees could keep Gray or (more likely) flip him elsewhere...
