This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week, the Rangers have been off for the NHL All Star Game, the Knicks have just been off, the Yanks made Ottavino official and saw two Yankee Greats elected to the Hall of Fame, and the Giants scouted the Senior Bowl. Let's take a look what's up next.

Yankees: The Yanks may or may not be done with the acquisition phase of their offseason work, but let's talk about some other stuff. The Captain's Camp which original gave close prospects an opportunity to work with Derek Jeter, should be getting underway this week. Now last year, they worked with Nick Swisher, who is now part of the org, so we'll see who the special guest "Legend" is this year. Mariano has decided to start working with Yankee pitchers, so it could be Mo.  In other organizational news, David Adams, the starcrossed 2B, will be managing SI, and rising managerial talent, Patrick Osborn is taking over the Thunder.  Former Yankee opponent, Jay Bell will be guiding the Railriders.  We'll take a look at the staff, once the seasons are starting.

Giants: the Giants were at the Senior Bowl this week, and we can assume they were looking at QB's, OL's, Pass rushers and LB's.  Otherwise, the Senior Bowl is tomorrow, the Combine is February 27-March 5th, and Free Agency starts on March 14.  The NFL Draft will be from April 26-28. If there's any other news, we'll jump on it.

Knicks: The Tank continues and with the Frebuary 7th trade deadline on the way, the bad roster might get even worse. All but a few Knicks, like Knox and Robinson, are and should be available.  The situation with Enes Kanter seems to be degrading, so we could see something there any day now. Tank seasons are hard to watch.

Rangers: the NHL trade deadline is Februart 25th, for those playing at home and many Rangers seem to be available. Assuming they can match last year's haul, including even more 1st rounders, it would be a great next move in their rolling rebuild. I'm hoping they hold onto Kreider and Mika, but we'll see.

So there we are, more organizational stuff, than anything else, since both the Knicks and Rangers are tanking. Have a great week!

Whether or not one thinks the NYG are headed in the right direction, it seems whoever the morons are that leak their thinking on potential draft picks to the media, e.g., Schwartz, who got it right on Barkley well before the draft, are still there.

Fools.

I predicted Barkley without any clues or connections.

It’s been years with them leakihg though.

Some of my old sources are dead. Though, outside of Evan Engram it's been easy enough to guess, and going back to the `90s I used to have a lon streak going of always guessing their secod rounder.

I hear ya.

Frank with the pulled groin again. Guy needs to play.

Barkley playing Defensive End was moronic. The Pro-Bowl is the biggest waste of time there is.

I don't watch it, but they had no right to play Saquon at DE.

Woj says Knicks will be aggressive in Anthony Davis trade talks.

I wouldn't give up KP or KK, so I don't know how they could be.

At 9:08 AM, Blogger Rich said...

My guess is they would give up one But I don’t think they can make the best offer no matter what.

Berman seems to be way off thinking that the Lakers of the paper for Davis if it’s about having talent to trade. The Celtics have much more to offer.

At 11:45 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That the Lakers are the favorites

At 6:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If we were to trade, KK, KP and our 2019 first, we'd have one player and nothing else. DId that for Melo, with lesser players and more picks and we won NOTHING.

At 10:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

And the Celtics would still probably have a better offer because they can offer similar talent with less question marks. So I don’t see a deal here.

Any talk that the Yankees prefer Arenado to Machado I think is a diversion and bullshit. or maybe they’re going to build a new Yankee stadium on Bear Mountain.

They’ll come up with a reason not to spend on Arenado next offseason and Trout the offseason after that. It’s all designed to continuously kick the can down the road.

I don’t know if any of you guys have watched the ESPN+ series on LeBron. His childhood friends are now business moguls as a result of their connection to him. One of them, Rich Paul, is Anthony Davis’s agent. There is a blatant appearance of impropriety there but maybe that means he will go to the Lakers.

That would fit with what has happened only since I was like a small child, with Chamberlain, Baylor, Kareem, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, and now LeBon having joined the Lakers at some point.

Meanwhile while the Knicks ...

The Yankees are now in the environmental science business.

The Bombers said on Tuesday they created an environmental science adviser position — the first in professional sports — appointing Dr. Allen Herschkowitz to the new role. The team said Herschkowitz job will be creating new environmental initiatives, as well as enhancing current ones.

“The Yankees have always been devoted to supporting the best interest of our community, our fans and our players, and we believe effective eco-friendly initiatives are a key element of our interaction,” owner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement. “We have made significant strides throughout the years, and as such, Yankee Stadium is proud to promote a zero-waste economy, and stand as one of the most successful recycling and composting venues in all of sports

I wasn’t aware of this and I’m not about to pay you for the athletic. I like the hire though.

5. A few weeks ago Lindsey Adler (subs. req’d) passed along word the Yankees hired Dillon Lawson away from the Astros to be their new minor league hitting coordinator. He’ll help create and implement hitter development strategies in the farm system. Lawson, who joined Houston from the University of Missouri, has extensively researched pitch recognition, and was called the “hitting coach of the future” by one of his former Astros colleagues for his data-driven philosophies and state of the art training methods. From Adler:

The understanding that some hitters have a better eye for recognizing what pitch is coming than others is not new. (Southern Illinois professor) Dr. Fadde and Lawson have attempted to analyze that advantage, and make it a skill that can be specifically developed in hitters.

One of the most effective tools is having hitters watch video of pitches being thrown, then cutting off the feed before the pitch completes its trajectory. The hitter is asked to guess what type of pitch type they saw. Ideally, a hitter should be looking for indicators like a wrist looking skinnier for the pronation of a curveball or slower arm action for a changeup.

They keep poaching the best scouts and coaches.

That’s an excellent hire. Hal at least seems to be sparing no expense on the minor league side.

Both the draft pool and IFA pools are pre-fixed, and Hal always said he likes budgets.

I was thinking, there’s definitely collusion going on. If Machado and Harper sign one year deals they are in a better position to claim damages.

From what I’ve seen of the Duke quarterback video he wouldn’t be my choice at six.

If the Knick trade for Davis it will set them back another 5-7 years of no Championship. The cost will be too much and we will just go backwards IMO.

Never want to see the Giants take another generically named Duke QB.

Here’s Law’s full take on Florial, who’s still currently the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect according to MLB.com:

There were some reasons underlying the poor performance, and I did see him again. I’ve seen him a lot the last two years. I think a joke I told him, well it wasn’t a joke, the line I had on the call was I’ve seen him strikeout on every single pitch type. That remains true. It happened again. I don’t ‑‑ it’s not that he can’t tell a ball from a strike, it’s that I really don’t think he can recognize a fastball from an off‑speed pitch. Whether it’s a changeup, breaking ball, whatever, he is constantly fooled by different pitch types.

I think his outcomes, and I mentioned too that the Yankees hired Bill Lawson, a pitching coach from outside, whose main focus is helping hitters to learn how to recognize pitches. That can’t be a coincidence. Arguably their third best position player prospect has this very clear need. It seems like that’s probably part of the reason they hired this guy was to work with Florial and guys like Florial.

I think there are two outcomes for Florial. If he figures out some sort of pitch recognition, he’s an everyday guy or better. There is no middle ground here because if he doesn’t figure it out, he’s not going to produce any value in the majors at all. And he’s going to have a hard time hitting Double‑A pitching if he can’t figure out different pitch types because at that level guys will have good quality secondary.

They may not command them, but that’s not been the issue. He mistimes even if they’re throwing a breaking pitch for a strike, because he just doesn’t pick it up. So I still think he was on the just missed list for a reason. He’s got star tools. He’s got star upside.

It’s going to be difficult for him to get there with the current problems with pitch recognition. It’s a very clear thing for him to work on. That’s got to be a mandate for player development. We know what we have here. You’re not working on getting him stronger or faster, you’re working on one specific hole in his game that is preventing him from becoming a regular and potentially a star.

See, I was willng to trade him and think the class of 17 OF's have more upside.

This made up Knick offer makes no sense because Davis is not going to sign here.

Second time they've circualted his name is trade discussions, and this after they told him the plan was to build around him. Still unhappy that there's been no extension, but he's been injured and that's on him.

Now Woj is sayoing KP left the meeting prefering a trade whis is awful news for the rebuild.

At 12:03 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah I read the thing from Woj. My point is you’re not getting felt full value without him playing. So if I’m Dolan I’m firing Mills Perry etc. and letting Porzingis decide about new front office

Passan: Nolan Arenado's $26 million arbitration settlement is an MLB record. The question for the Rockies at this point is whether they can lock Arenado into a long-term deal. There is clearly interest in doing so.

I don’t want him on the Yankees.
