Ranger Stuff

Right now, the Rangers are having their Organizational Meetings.  This happens every year ahead of the draft and free agency, where they figure out their options, their plans and their targets.  Since they didn't have any playoffs at all, they've had a lot more time than usual, so hopefully that leads to a great plan, and not to overthinking things or getting cute.

You might recall, the Rangers attempted a 2016 Yankee type selloff at the deadline.  In doing so, they liquidated a lot more of their core than the Yanks did in 2016, and perhaps did not pick up any Torres or Sheffield level talent in return.  What they got was two extra firsts, an extra second and an extra third. So that's where they're  going to have to find their Justus.  Right now they're sitting 9th in the first round of a draft where most pundits believe the elite talent dries up at 8. So unless they can count on a ringer falling, they're probably discussing a trade up.  Hope they used roster players and not their picks.

They still haven't hired a coach, and it's getting a little weird. Last week Jim Montgomery took the Stars job, and Dan Quinn took himself out of the running,  Today, Minnesota-Duluth coach Scott Sandelin, who was thought to be another top coaching target, revealed he has had no contact with the Rangers.  That's awful.  What's more, Dave Tippet's name is starting to be mentoned.  Tippet, who coached the Start for a long time, then coached Phoenix for a long time, is another win nothing re-tread, who is one job past his "prove it" job.  The Rangers were AV's "prove it" and he proved he was what he'd always been. The Rangers need "fresh" coach, which was their original word for what they hoped their search would produce.  Anything stale will be unacceptable and a search failure.

There's always surprises in the top 10 of the draft, so players that are projected top 8 will be there at 9. Rangers may not go with consensus top 9 pick, they do have some good scouting though.. I trust them for now .. Hope Tampa wins and we get their #1 next year too ..
