This Week on the Blog
Alright, this week saw the Yanks keep on keeping on, the Knicks flub a coaching search, the Rangers add more internationa wings, and the Giants quietly continue their offseason program. Let's see what the coming week holds.
Yankees: The starters have been pitching well, but suddenly there's been a blip in the bullpen. Hopefully it will pass. Monty will be gone for 6-8 weeks and it looks like they are giving Domingo German the first crack at being the new 5. Down on the farm, the Yanks this week promoted Justus Sheffield to AAA and Jonathan Loaisiga from High A to AA. Both of those guys could come fast, and Erik Swanson is finally pitching like he looks - a man among boys with a sub 1 ERA. He cannot be long for Trenton. Right now, Sonny Gray is in the midst of what's looking like a second quality start in a row, so we might have some time. Yankee Magic Happening Now.
Giants: The Giants are currently getting ready for their rookie mini-camp. It will feature all of the draft picks, the undrafted guys they have signed, and a bunch of tryout players looking for jobs, once again they have invited a bunch of guys from Canada. I don't know if Webb will be allowed to participate - the rules have changed from time to time, but the camp will definitely be the Barkley and Lauletta show. Don't know what we'll see from Hernandez, and the pass rush, though it did look like rushers were getting to Darnold on the films from the Jet mini-camp, so maybe they'll flash some. Let's hope it's well covered.
Knicks: The Knicks have hired but not yet introduced Davd Fizdale. Mills and Perry really do like to talk, so I'm not really looking forward to another 50 minute series of platitudes about how great their plan is. It already seems to have failed from here. Keith Smart seems to be joining the Fizdale's staff, and I assume it will be filled out with more guys like that, and no old mentor type. The Draft Lottery isn't till May 15. Watch these guys win it.
Rangers: The Rangers will have their organizational meetings this week, but as of yet do not have their new coach. Wouldn't surprise me if they named Sheldon Keefe in the next few days. When they let Montgomery go to Dallas and Quinn withdraw, I felt they had their guy, or that two perfect candidates were not finalists, but other guys were. Keefe would be a great hire for the young team they want to develop as would any of the college coaches. They have been a lot quieter about their search than the Knicks were. And I have a feeling I'll like the choice more.
So there we are. Yanks are winning, the rest of our teams our hopefully getting ready to start winning. Hope it's a winning week for all of you.

Gray + Romine for Bumgarner, who says no?
Gleyber is good.
Should Chance Adams be tried in the pen?
Gray looking better.
Chance had offseason surgery to remove bone chips, so he's not quite back to normal yet.
Does Gray have any sense that effusive praise of Romine will be viewed by the jerks as a diss of Sanchez?
Sanchez is a generational talent. People need to stop embarrassing themselves with their criticism.
Gray just feels more comfortable with Romine and his stats show that.
Boone will and should continue to pair them up.
Can only do that for so long. Romine is a fine backup, but he won’t be starting in October, and if Gray is one of the four starters — not a given — he will have to throw to Sanchez.
In other words, this can’t be a permanent thing. And Boone knows that.
This suggests it’s pitch selection not catcher identity:
RAB:
Over at FanGraphs, Sheryl Ring suggested that the Yankees’ fastball-light approach to pitching was hurting Gray. In his two most recent starts–undoubtedly his most successful ones of the year–Sonny returned to throwing more fastballs. Before his start on April 30, he threw fastballs and sinkers/two-seamers just over 47% of the time. In that April 30 start against Houston and yesterday’s against Cleveland, Gray threw a total of 190 pitches, 123 of which–about 65%–were fastballs or sinkers/two-seamers.
Yeah, it's what the Astros encouraged Cole to do. More 4 seamers.
Domingo doesn't seem to be a headcase.
And he won’t be bitching about Sanchez’s catching.
German seems so cool out there..maybe just me. He has ice in his veins..
I have always hated using Betances for 2 innings
I didn’t like Girardi but Boone (or Rothschild) can be idiotic
eh, 18 days in a row, and they really handled it.
They have.
Who else was available really? Cole?
Whoa
GLEYBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s kind of amazing that on a team with so many good young hitters that the youngest one could turn out to be the best.
