This Week on the Blog
That was some week. Yanks are gaining traction under Boone. Giants had a great draft. The Rangers got screwed in the NHL Lottery for the 47 millionth time, and the Knicks kept expanding their coaching search, beyond Europe to Juwon Howard. Okay, let's take a look at this week.
Yankees: Yanks have won 8 straight, and they're still not firing on all cylinders. Out of the extreme weather conditions of the first several series, the starters have been better - except for Sonny Gray. And he's not the only issue that's coming to a head. Brandon Drury's better and playing down in AAA. But he's not better than Miguel Andujar, and that's the issue. The firm of Miggy&Gleyber has tightened up the 8 and 9 spots in the batting order and will both move higher soon. Miggy hits like a younger version of Gary Sanchez, and Gleyber is a time traveller from the 1930's, who after getting knocked down by a pitch last night, dusted himself off, and lined a single on the next pitch. These kids shouldn't be going anywhere, and they shouldn't be sharing positions with Brandon Drury. Nothing against, Brandon, but he's Pipped.
Giants: The Giants just had their best draft in forever. That's probably because they had the second pick in all but the 4th round where they had the 8th pick. They still managed to get the best player in the draft, the second best guard in the draft, three passrushers, and another candidate for quarterback of the future. Not bad. Here's the bet they made as far as QB's go: they'd rather pay a huge salary to a guy that can get on the field from day one, than pay a #2 overall salary to a guy who will not play for a year or two. There is a need for QB in the future, so they spent another mid round pick on the intriguing Kyle Lauletta. Added bonus: the Patriots wanted him, and traded out of the 4th as soon as the Giants took him off the board. Extra-added bonus Patriot Nation is now upset with the Giants again.
Since the draft, the Giants have been signing UDFA's, and we could see some more turnover at the bottom of the roster up to and through the rookie mini-camp.
Btw, I don't think Shurmur will ever want to run a 3 day full team camp into the draft again. He looked cashed through most of the weekend.
Rangers: The Rangers got screwed at the lottery again and fell from 8 to nine, through the backstage magic of whatever that "random" process is. It's doubly bad, because the Rangers have 3 first round picks, and they should make them all. But the Rangers also have a need for elite talent, and that required lottery luck, or will now require trading picks and or players to move up. And I'm pretty sure they will. It won't be efficient. And their undercover coaching search moves on.
Knicks: Just when it looked like the Knicks were close to making a hire, they added Juwan Howard to their search. Who knows when that interview will take place or if it has. I'm starting to think that Mills and Perry are talking to so many different candidates is to get ideas. Hopefully this wraps up soon. They have three candidates that could work in Stack, Bud and Larranaga. Pick one. And let's wish the Knicks some lottery luck.
So there we are. Have a great week!

Entering today, Gleyber has never lost a game at the major-league level. What’s better, Sanchez and Stanton haven’t even settled in, and Hicks is sporting a >.400 OBP despite hitting below .250, a batting average I suspect will go up.
They need last night’s Tanaka more often.
The NYK weren’t the only team to miss on Donovan Mitchell, but it clearly was a miss.
Very odd the DG hasn't signed a bunch of UDFA OL?
They have room for about 8, which is about what they have done.
Misread. Sorry.
Angel Hernandez is offensively incompetent.
Mitchell will be 22 when next season stars, Frank will turn 20 in July, and has already played a season in the league. Give him some more time.
Giants have signed 2 UDFA' OL's. They currently have a bunch of OL's on the roster, so must have been signing some street free agents.
CC!!!!
9 Straight!
There are few players on the roster I want to win a ring more than CC. If he’s consistently good, then things will be a lot easier for the Yankees.
Great series, but is Gardner slumping or is he in a deeper decline?
I don’t see Mitchell’s first step quickness from Frank. I think he has potential but he may be an old school complete guard rather than a pure point. Obviously, his shot has to improve a lot.
Two sources tell us #NYGiants area scout Chris Pettit will be elevated to Director of College Scouting. Pettit originally joined the team as a pro personnel intern in '98.
I see some negative commentary because people would have wished they would’ve hired from outside, but as I’ve said I think that they had good information, but Reese and Ross didn’t know how to use it. This is probably someone who Gettleman has respected from his prior time here. So again the real issue is why Mara keep the incompetent duo around for so long.
Big series for the Yankees. Must come out of it at least with a split. Houston has some very good SP.
Eh, if they steal a win I’ll be happy. A strong home stand is far more important IMO.
I’d like to steal their pitching coach.
I see they signed Gates but who is the second UDFA OL signed?
Pettit has been with the Giants forever, and last time they went outside the organization they ended up with 10 years of whiffs on several key areas, notably OL, RB and LB. They were otherwise good at finding DT's, DE's and WR's. Up and down on things like TE's and DB's. We got back to meat and potatos this past weekend. Finally. And Pettit was all over it.
I see we’re going with the personal catcher experiment even though last season proved with Tanaka it didn’t matter.

(like Seinfeld says Newman)
The Houston pitching coach is the difference in this game, and maybe last season’s ALCS.
It's all pine tar. And Boone is not taking this seriously, if he's sitting Judge, which he is.
Then we need pine tar.
Remember those two months last season when Hicks was great. That was awesome.
A pitcher’s strike zone is the reason they need robot umps.
Brutal game where the umps expanded the strike zone against us again. They don't do it in NYC because they wouldn't live through their corruption.
I had a feeling Gray would pitch well because he pitched well against them in the playoffs last year, but I’m not liking this personal catcher stuff at all.
But it is what it is and we need him to pitch well in order to win.
“(Romine) just adapts to the game and flows,” said Gray to Coley Harvey. “There’s a great communication. In between innings there’s constant communication, which for me is extremely beneficial with everything I try to do with the baseball.”
On one hand I’m fine with a young Gary Sanchez getting regular rest, but Gray’s problems are Gray’s, not Sanchez’s. This doesn’t need to be a permanent thing, because in the playoffs, Sanchez will need to catch Gray if he’s still here.

After talking with Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown, the New York Knicks have completed interviews for the franchise's head-coaching job, and team officials are huddling to reach a consensus on the hiring of a candidate, league sources told ESPN.
The Knicks hope to hire a new coach this week, sources said.
So, I hate to put words in anyone’s mouth, but if you go read Trevor Bauer’s Twitter feed, he seems to be convinced the Astros are doing something to doctor the baseballs for their pitchers.
It’s in the realm of possibility certainly, but he’s made some bizarre comments over time so that has to factor into his credibility.
If he sees it, however, others do as well and MLB should look into it.
Rangers are said to be very impressed with Denver coach Jim Montgomery who just steered his team to the NCAA title. He as well as Quinn and Sandelin would be near perfect fits. Org meetings start on the 7th, but Dallas is also interested in Montgomery, so this could come to a head sooner.
I wish the Knicks were looking at college coaches.
I think Jay Wright turned down an interview.
I don’t blame him but there are others.
Not a lot of Brad Stevens right now.
Is Montgomery hurt???? Why is German up in the second inning? Hope it's just his throw day.

Jordan Montgomery left tonight’s start after one inning with an injury. He tossed a 1-2-3 first inning on seven pitches and looked like regular old Jordan Montgomery, though replays showed him flexing his left arm a bit as he walked off the field. That’s not good. His velocity was fine though.

Interesting wrinkle in the Knicks' coaching search: League sources say Mark Jackson has received a strong behind-the-scenes push from Rich Kleiman, Kevin Durant's longtime business partner and a lifelong Knicks fan who is close to both Jackson and Knicks president Steve Mills
