Greg Bird to Begin His Rehab Assignment
Greg Bird, who was the Yanks best hitting prospect when he, Sanchez and Judge were coming up, will begin his annual rehab assignment tomorrow in Trenton. They do tend to keep them down till they're on fire, so let's hope Greg, who was born with the walk gene is ready to roll. Believe it or not he has been missed both from his offensive power and grinding, but also defensively, where he has made himself a plus player. No more dropped double plays. This is great news.

Yes.
Tanaka cannot be relied on. It’s an inescapable fact.
Didi, 0-17, massively correcting.
Nice plate coverage by Stanton.
I think Tanaka is always "managing"these days, and isn;t going to cut loose outside of a much bigger game than a May tilt.
Could be.
The bullpen seems to feel the effects of max use in the playoffs last year.
What good is a 13-man bullpen when two of them aren’t going to be relied upon for anything more than mop-up duty?
It’s the weakest part of the team.
The obserevation about Tanaka is based on last year's playoffs. We're missing Kahnle and perhaps Warren, but Holder could be stepping up. We're carrying too many pitchers and will need a 4 man bench.
So a pain issue that he can only tolerate short-term?
Great win. Great that they are getting contributions from underachievers.
Tanaka's xFIP entering today was 3.56. I'm curious to see what it is after tonight's game, but if I understand xFIP correctly it means he was pitching much better than his ERA suggests.
Kahnle threw today and is expected back by the end of the month. Drury supposedly isn't where they'd like him to be, so Andujar will remain at third for the time being.
In MiLB news, Chance Adams got lit up today. Maybe it's time to move him to the pen?
Bird will give them a huge lift and is a best friend and leader to Judge, Austin, Sanchez and Severino. Best lefty hitter on the team, regardless of Didi's April sample. and 40 homer potential. He can put them up in a hurry. Plus he helps on D with the best arm we've had at first in forever.
Curry
During spring training games, Aaron Boone could often be heard imploring his players to win the at bat. Thought about that as the Yankees won at bat after at bat in a game-changing bottom of the 8th. Walker, Andujar, Torres, Gardner, Judge. Quality ABs.
Walker workings out at 3B.
A deal will have to be done by Next week i would imagine? To many bodies coming back. A great problem to have..
Who do you think could get traded at this point in the season?
Didi has forgotten how to walk.
And hit. April was a mirage.
Today is day 1 for Bird. Cant get here soon enough.
What is Didi’s BABIP during this slump?
.208 in May, but he had 2 BB.
Holder was really good.
Betances...
That’s on Boone for not realizing he can’t go more than an inning.
It’s a very good sign Sanchez is walking. Hopefully the analytics team has relayed to him how incredibly unlucky he’s been and to just keep the same approach.
Boone f’s that up repeatedly.
Though, again, to be fair, it would be nice if two pen spots weren’t essentially wasted space. I really do think it’s time to move Chance Adams there.
Guys like Kahnle and Warren should be back soon.
Depends on Adams’s arm strength post surgery.
You guys are absolutely ridiculous. Seriously, we just won 17/18 against all teams who were in 1st place and everyone on here is complaining.
Dellin pitched great last night except for being hurt by good ole YS homerun. Sending him out for the 2nd inning was a sound plan, Boone knew the bullpen had been overextended the previous 2 games and it's still MAY. It was the right call, 150%.
Didi is basic regesssion to the mean, there's no way he was going to keep that pace, same goes for Sanchez & Stanton. However, Didi showed what he can be at his peak albeit if it was sustained over 162 games he would be a unanimous MVP.
This is baseball, they play 162 games, it's a marathon. Freaking out over 1 game or a small slump is silly and you need take a step back and breathe because that's no way to be a fan in baseball.
Oh please. We can point out what we don’t like. We aren’t freakin robots.
As a comparison, the Yankees had a pretty good season last year with Girardi, some would say a great season given the expectations and learning curves that were overcome with young players.
To some so called experts, any criticism of Girardi was considered “ridiculous.”
But he wasn’t renewed, essentially fired. Hal has intimated that he wouldn’t have come back even if they won the WS.
So which group was ridiculous, the defenders or the critics?
Read every thread from the last month. There is wasaaay more praise than criticism.
People have passion about baseball. It’s reflected in the threads.
That’s what makes money for Hal and his ilk.

I'm not sure I understand your argument, re: Girardi being fired. My point was as Yankee fans on here, who I find to be more intelligent than your casual fan, there's a general lack of appreciation for what we're watching.
This isn't your 30 year old squad on a hot streak; This is a burgeoning dynasty, lead by a core of studs that we haven't seen in 20 years. Rather than enjoy it, it seems most on here prefer to critique every little play. To each their own but I guess I expected better from knowledgeable fans who just witnessed a feat last done 60 years ago.
In my opinion, this team is just getting started. Now is the time to demolish the next 14 games against crap teams, we just went through a gauntlet and somehow did the unthinkable. Like damn, we could be batting out of order, now that's stuff to complain about.
Your viewing a skewed sample with passions running high during a game.
The team is great; we’re lucky to be able to root for it, as opposed to the big hairy monster types of just a few years ago.
I mean that.
But during a game things are going to piss people off and they vent here
Be cool, peeps. Last night was frustrating, starting with the homeplate ump, but you've got to love how the Yanks came back again. I don't think this was one of those house money games Girardi would manage when they'd won the first 2 games of the series. They really tried, and maybe Boone was wrong to try to go 2 with Dellin, but he is a former starter, and there might have been fan interference on the fly ball homer. A Betances who can get used to pitching 2 innings again, as he has in the past, is a major weapon.
I’m not sure there are letdowns MLB, but if there is, this series may present that challenge.
I think the Yanks will channel this into more wins. I love this version of them, and frankly, the top of the order has been missing Bird, and not been fully functional yet this year. It's going to be a spectacularly great summer and possibly historically great one.
I’m going vent because I hate the personal catcher shit and I hate dissing Sanchez overtly or covertly.
Justus left his start in the third. Hope he's not hurt..
Meanwhile, the other problem with the personal catcher thing is it puts Romine' bat in the order.
Yanks are having awful BABIP luck against pitchers with high ERA's.
AARON JUDGE!!!!!
Yes. If Romine was good it would be less of an issue. It seems psychological with Gray. My guess is he tenses up at times. He was good with Oakland when healthy. Health was the reason to oppose the deal. There is pressure here for some.
Can only speak for myself here: Billy, please don't mistake small points of contention as not enjoying the bigger picture. :) As you said, this team is only getting started and will likely be better come August/September. I've enjoyed this run quite a bit, and even if they fall a bit back down to earth, it's only the start of something good that will last for a long while if management stays on the current trajectory. (I actually think Didi is going to be fine and has at least partly been a victim of poor BABIP luck in May, like Sanchez has the entire season.) Tone is often difficult to decipher online, but the complaints I've listed in this thread should be viewed more as passing comments rather than strong rebuttals of the front office.
I think Romine has value to this team and certainly don't mind him as a backup catcher, but clearly this isn't a Gary Sanchez thing.
Still down 6-4 after 6. We will win. Lost the momentum when Hale gave up the bomb. We'll get it back.
Yankee Source is an optimistic guy
It’s early but Domingo German looks miles ahead of Sonny Gray in terms of arsenal of pitches, command, and execution.
I'm sure Gleyber just bunted on his own, but if you move two runners, it's generally worth it.
German is 94-97 (98) with a good slider and change.
Brandon Drury just hit a AAA grand slam.
It wouldn’t be a terror idea for Didi to take The first pitch.
Terrible
They all do it but I wish lineups were more fluid.
Weak.
Could be another walk off Friday.
David fucking Hale. I believe Boone is the right manager, but he's having some trouble with the middle innings buttons.
It could be Rothschild.
I don't trust any Rothschilds.
Gonna need a big 9th.
It’s a rest-the-pen night. The bigger issue is Gray being absolutely putrid. He keeps this up and there won’t be a personal catcher, because he’ll be booted from the rotation.
Unacceptable loss.
German as losing streak stopper.
Flaherty calls this a mixed bag for Gray. Go away.
By the playoffs, German could be our 2 or 3 starter. That stuff is real. The only question will be if they want to put CC or Justus or Monty between he and Sevy, because the stuff is a little close.
That would optimal.
Josh Rodgers is a lefty pitching a shutout in AAA right now, and I'd rather have him or a few others on the 40 than Hale and Cole who jjust spent 2 weaks in the major league pen while we had a short bench every fricking night.
Those two are replacement level, at best.
I don't know what the point of keeping them was other than they expected more losses or didn't think Kahnle and Warren would be gone this long.
RAB
Gray Days: Geez, imagine how poorly things would’ve gone if Sonny Gray didn’t have his personal catcher. He gave it up every which way Friday night. Homers, weak base hits, you name it. Sonny’s final line: 5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. The complete inability to miss bats is a Very Big Problem. Seven swings and misses out of 93 total pitches and a 9.0% swinging strike rate going into the game. Really bad. Really, really bad. The last two starts were good. Not great, but good. This was just awful. Gray has a 6.39 ERA (5.16 FIP) in 38 innings.
Imagine how much worse Gray would have done with Sanchez behind the dish.
Hopefully Sanchez can improve his catching skills and build a good repertoire with Gray.
You think Romine is the only thing standing between Gray and a complete and total meltdown?
If that’s the case, Gray may be unfixable here. I’m not that pessimistic about him yet.
