Sonny Finally Wins

It took him three tries and on his third, Sonny Gray outpitched the Mets's Jacob DeGrom, who is tough to beat. Thanks to 6 great innings, Sonny managed. He got a big boost from a Jacoby Ellsbury blast, and then another big bop from Gary Sanchez. Gary's ELITE, btw.  He later had a big sac fly to score Judge which provided Chapman a much needed cushion as he tried to close.  Both Gray and Chapman were snakebit by two run homers.  Sonny gave his up in the 7th, when maybe he should have been out, and Chapman's happened as he tried to close. Fortunately he was able to get the "save" after giving up the two run bomb, but he should not be closing now.   Big win just the same.

If all goes well, Bird should be back with the club next week and Castro hopefully soon after.

Headley should go back to 3B with Frazier getting some starts there.

I hope they really aren't that blind about the contribution the manager made to the season being in peril

Thus far, I'm hating the Garcia trade the most, though we gave the least.

A lot of these haters don't shorten their swing it all behind in the count with men on base

Is Todd Frazier really a better offensive option than a pitcher?

The Red Sox are a better team right now. On talent alone, not by a lot, but when you factor in Girardi , a lot

Judge and Sanchez are better than anyone they have. And I'd rather have Sevy going forward than Sale now.

Sox fans hate Farrell just as much as Yankee fans hate Girardi.

At 5:43 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I'm talking about today. Girardi is killing this team.

At 5:49 AM, Blogger Rich said...

As for Farrell, I don't pay enough attention. But I see Girardi's pernicious inflexibility every day.

At 6:28 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Hey, be grateful - we could have Terry Collins!

At 10:15 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

True, Billy.

I don't hate Girardi as much as Phil or Rich, but I do strongly question whether he's the guy to lead beyond this year. At the completion of the 2017 season, he will have been the manager for 10 seasons — maybe it's time for a new voice after a decade.

At 11:18 AM, Blogger Rich said...

It's not personal, I just think he's a stubborn fool.

At 11:24 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Agree - I think Girardi has some good qualities and some bad ones but overall he's not a detriment or major liability. The major issue I have with him is he's not progressive as much as I'd like but there have been minor improvements. I've recently seen him deploy Betances in a high leverage spot, as opposed to an inning. If he shows me more of that, I can live with some other stuff.

HOWEVER, as someone with the MLB package who watches a lot of games besides NYY, Girardi is head and shoulders above 80% of the managers. John Farrell is TERRIBLE, if you think Girardi has problems managing a pen, watch this guy for a few days and you'll be breaking your TV.

Other terrible managers include Matheny, Ausmas, Showalter (DUDE KILLS PITCHERS), Dusty Baker (LOL @ lineup construction), Terry Collins (he PH for Dom Smith with Jose Reyes the other night against Chapman!!! I couldn't believe this, he should have been fired immediately. Don't even get me started on his use of Conforto the past 2 years and BEGINNING of this year).

We watch Girardi day in and day out so we're obviously going to nitpick and second guess a lot of stuff but he's not as bad as we make him out to be in comparison to his peers.

At 11:47 AM, Blogger Rich said...

His inflexibility with Chapman despite having several incredibly good options to close is pathetic, and it's the reason they aren't closer to the Sox.

Most managers don't have those options nor do they have his payroll to work with. The payroll is a neglected point. It's impossible to fairly compare managers without factoring it in

He stuck with Clippard despite the suckitude and that set them on their slump. In someways it has continued to this point.

He has buried Wade. Why?

He has always prioritized defense over offense and until this year with the Judge and Sanchez's emergence it produced underperforming offense.

He yanks Montgomery like a yo-yo

Most of the team doesn't grind. Why? Maybe because he never did as a player.

At 12:34 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't hate anyone. I don't want Girardi around the young team that's coming. He wrecked the Miami pitchers, and he makes a lot of bad decisions.

Girardi will never use Mitchell again.

At 7:03 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

And he shouldn't after that. 7-1 lead and you cough up four? Back to Scranton.

At 7:09 PM, Blogger Rich said...

But by that logic, anyone who has a bad performance (player or manager) should go. If that were uniformly applied, then fine.

At 7:21 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Severino and Sanchez are so exciting.

At 4:53 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Maybe JLo and A-Rod need to have lunch with Judge.

At 6:54 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Was at the game again last night and I am still in shock of the HR Gary hit. He was out in front, lunging and still hit it 400+.

This is now the second game in a row where Severino struggled after bad defensive plays behind him. Last Saturday Frazier booted 2 balls and Severino collapsed and then tonight Judge dropped the ball in RF and he collapsed.

And Mitchell should be ashamed of himself. 7-1 lead, BOTTOM of the METS ORDER and you can't even get a single out? I saw Betances warming and I was FURIOUS because we are going into a HUGE series and now he's unavailable tonight. We could have had a full rested pen after Shreve gave us 2 good innings but nope. I'm sure this won't come back to haunt us tonight. Way to go Mitchell.

In regards to Judge, he is swinging at bad pitches. He needs to tighten it back up.

At 7:36 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Probably just a young player who gets rattled easily by errors. His pitch count was also close to the 100s by that point, I believe, so perhaps he just ran out of gas. Something to keep an eye on either way.

And you're 100-percent spot-on with Mitchell. I get that he hadn't pitched in several days, but you just cannot come into a 7-1 game and do that. If he can't get outs against a bad lineup with that kind of a cushion and prevent Betances from having to come in and get three outs, then swap him for Caleb Smith and see what Smith can do as a reliever.

Phil, I saw you mention on Twitter you want Brian Butterfield to replace Girardi. Is that in reference to the Sox's third-base coach? And why him specifically?

On RAB, there is a running meme of Cashman failed because according to some he is the bestest.

Not firing thus manager despite how he has destroyed this season is an objective failure.
