Yanks: Still Loaded Post Deadline

Estevan Florial is still a Yankee!  Maybe they can promote him to Tampa now.  We will probably see the deserving Solak move up to Trenton now that they have a spot open in the infield.  What we're really seeing is a testament to just how deep the system has become over the past several years.  And the system didn't just become great because we got Torres and Frazier, et al, at last year's deadline.   The Yankes were able to scotchguard the bullpen and the rotation, get at least a better defender at 3rd,  as well as mucho international dough, with mostly draft picks and really only one of the trade pieces, Littell, from the recent sell-offs.  And the system is still loaded.  So loaded in fact, they're going to have to use the waiver trade deadline, and all of the time before the rule 5 roster freeze to create more space on their 40 man roster.

Losing Blake Rutherford was brutal, and Mateo, who had worked hard to find his game was tough, too.  But as much as we loved Kaprielian and Fowler, their injury situations were clouding the Yanks rotational and outfield situations. And the Yanks just drafted about 60 Kaprielian clones, and Florial will be the CF as fast as he can climb there. It will be interesting to see if Sonny Gray will be David Cone or Jimmy Key, in terms of impact, or if he'll be able to stay healthy.  But they were able to get him for two high upside injured prospects with clock uncertainty, and a guy with 80 speed.  I think Mateo's 80 speed is the only thing for which the system doesn't have a ready made replacement.  Overall, the system is still in really good shape, and thus, so is the future.

As I said, although I would hold off on trades this season, I understand this one. I still don't like the Rutherford trade.

I think we have to trade off some veteran stuff, like Ellsbury if we can, and do still need to create room on the 40.

Yeah, and the errors didn't help.

They want to get under the tax next year. That means Betances is likely traded, as is Gardner. Could see them shipping off Headley at some point if one of the AAA infielders are ready. I've said before I would sell high on Castro.

I think they ride out Ellsbury next year then cut him.

Torres should be fully recovered by ST so I would imagine by mid season he can take over for Castro at 2B and Andujar can man 3B if his defense improves.

Yes, the lux tax issue probably prevented a Darvish trade. There are a lot of Steins who want to live extraordinarily well.

NYDN

Beane finally agreed to do the deal without Estevan Florial, the 19-year-old outfielder who has wowed the organization with a breakout season in Class A, but only when Cashman swallowed hard and offered Kaprielian, the former first-round pick from UCLA who the Yankees considered a potential ace before the need for Tommy John surgery in April.

I agree with this, and it is the reason I would have waited a year before trading excess prospects. I wanted a few more to become entrenched at the ML level. So I would have traded veterans this year. I suspect that ownership may have accelerated the timetable.

So while Cubs' Top 10 might not be as strong as others, it doesn't need to be. They have a young MLB core that isn't going anywhere. -- @Feinsand

Dillon Tate has caught fire down in Tampa and may be headed to Trenton after last night's dominant start. Big upside, if they've fixed him.

The big regret about Kaprielian, who is literally everything we want in a staring pitcher, is maybe they could have done the TJS right away. Then he would be ready to join the rotation next year.

Big question right now is whether or not Tanaka opts out and if we will be able to compete for Otani.

Once Bird gets back, our young core will look more set up.

My concern with Kap is he's pitched 57 innings in 2 years and then had TJS - He will take time to get back and that's if everything returns 100% - I wouldn't expect to see him until 2019 and even then, he may be capped at like 120 innings. He's a very high risk / high reward prospect.

Let's mark this deal down as one we take a look at in 3 years to see how some of these guys progressed.

I agree with that.

I wonder whar the Yankees would say if Tanaka's representatives asked to defer the opt-out for one season.

That elbow is a ticking bomb. Let him walk ans bring in Otani.

He might be a selling point for Otani

If nothing changes ( and it might) when Hicks gets back, Holliday is who I would sit. You don't get benefit of the doubt when you're over 35. Unless of course, you're Derek Jeter? Well, not if I was running the team, but thankfully flor all of you I'm not.

Florial and Park promoted to Tampa. Now I can actually pay attention to Tampa on days Tate doesn't start.
