Yanks At the Deadline
I'm starting this now, because even after a horrible month of baseball, replete with negative contributions by some veterans, the Yanks are back in First Place. So, under Yankee Policy, they must buy -- while I'd still rather sell -- but understand they're switchover to the Steinbrennerian Overdrive. At the begininng of trade season Cash said they wanted to be careful buyers and not disrupt the long term plan. A few weeks ago, I set out the players at each level that I didn't want to trade. Definitely already traded one and possibly two, Now we'll have to see if they can get their extra starter by turning over a passel of B+ type guys rather than any of the unique talents we have mixed among our prospects. To wit, Jake Cave and Billy McKinney have FOUND THEMSELVES. Cave has been the best hitter on the entire AAA level since returning from an early season injury, and McKinney is looking just like the hitter that got him drafted in the first round. These are ready made MLB corner outfielders. While the Yanks seem to have their corners taken care of for the next several years, these guys can do it for another team starting as soon as they show up. The Yanks should be able to pair these two as well as 2 pitching prospects and work something out. I think the fact that Ben Gamel has turned himself into a regular guy for Seattle can only help the Yanks move these two.
It would also be good for the Yanks, through both this deadline and the waiver period, to make some room to get some people off of the 40 man roster.
So those are the twin missions: get a usable starter, and pair down the 40 man.
The other reason I'm starting this tonight, is because the Yanks have traded for pitching on a number of Friday Nights over the years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again tonight.
UPDATE: Zach Littell has been scratched from his start...

I think the key is they can't fixate on one guy. Let the market come to them, or else move on.
Unfortunately, I am not coonfident that they share this approach.
I agree. Be open. There are several starters out there worth considering.
Look, I still think Caleb Smith or Domingo German could be that fifth guy we need right now and both are already on the 40.
@jcrasnick
Thus far, #Yankees have balked at #Athletics asking price for Gray. If it doesn't come down, they're prepared to go in different direction.
Their current offer is probably way too high
Its like looking at buying an expensive, recently well-conditioned pre-owned car. It looks and runs great now but there are likely to be costly repairs in the future.
It's a car, so there are going to be costly repairs no matter what. They exist for two reasons: to get your places and suck your wallet dry.
Sort of like how pitching exists to both help you win games and make you pay for their Tommy John surgery.
*you
And I'm only half kidding about the pitching part.
But unlikel a BMW you don't get the ultimate warranty.
Thought it was gonna happen last night. Hopefullly, the Yanks are being smart.
It's tough to develop pitchers with this manager
Honestly, I'd really like to see Smith as a reliever. Let someone else try being the fifth starter.
I'd like to see him be allowed to pitch six innings. He had one out and one on in the beginning of the 4th, would take a least one hit to score the man from first.... Ridiculous.
And we don't need Alonso!
Even if you absolutely love Cashman, it's difficult to deny he enables this managers worst instincts
We need a different kind of manager as we get progressively younger.
Sounding like it will be Mateo, Acevedo and Littell or someone else.
That's a steep price
Is Girardu's yo-yoing of Robertson up-and-down up-and-down reducing his effectiveness?
That's a ridiculous price
Girardi is back to abusing DRob.
