Yanks Trade for Jaime Garcia

Yanks opened up the final full day of the non-waiver trade period by acquring LHP Jaime Garcia from the Twins, for Dietrich Enns and Zach Littell. This is the second time Jaime has been traded in the past two weeks.  First from the Braves to the Twins and now the Twins to the Yanks. He has been a starter, and we'll have to see if this satisfies the season long quest to add a starter, or whether the Yanks are stil after Sonny Gray.

The move does remove Enns from the 40 Man roster, and the need to add Littell, who was shining this year, from the need to this offseason.  Garcia's ERA+ for this year is 116, while Gray's is 122.  I wonder if they will go to 6 starters, since Sevy and Monty will reach innings highs, and both Tanaka and CC are better on extended rest, or whether they will put Monty or Garcia in the pen.

I would feel better about the almost inevitable overpay for Gray if the included one of the worst managers in MLB as part of the deal.

I agree, and will have a lot to say about any Gray deal if it happens.

I'm guessing if Gray comes Montgomery goes to the pen to protect his innings limit. I'd be fine with that, personally, as he'll be penciled into next year's rotation. Still comes down to the cost in prospects.

The other issue with Gray is that it seems there is no real alternative. Garcia impacts the deal marginally if at all. So if you have ever bid for house you really want, and the seller senses you just have to have that house and it is a seller's market, it is almost impossible not to overpay.

And as I've repeated millions of times: you always pay more at the deadline.

Curry cites Gray's last six starts, rather than his injury history, as if that justifies Florial or Mateo. Again, as with Rutherford, both are likely to bring back significantly more in a trade a year from now. None are pitchers so the risk of injury is low.

Awesome catch by Frazier.

The White Sox traded left fielder Melky Cabrera to the Royals on Sunday afternoon for right-handed pitcher A.J. Puckett and left-hander Andre Davis.

If getting Garcia gave them a tiny bit of leverage Montgomery gave it up and more.

2 BB for Frazier. The one flaw in his game up here.

Beltre with 3000 hits.

Like almost 15 years ago, Phil wanted the Yankees to get him. I was coming off a time in my life of working 24/7 and didn't know much about him, and hadn't spent much time on the internet.

Great call.

Cessa down

How would he have fit with A-Rod and Jeter on the roster, hypothetically?

Pre-A-Rod (more hyphens per letter than I probably ever typed(

Fraszier needs more walks, for sure, but he has been pretty successful nailing first pitch fastballs, like Jeter used to be. Someone has to give him the patience talk, maybe Judge when he gets back to it.

I generally like it when we don't go down the the vey deadline, because we tend to capitulate, though CJ Henry never turned into anything, and Brandon Claussen had been ruined by abuse in the minors.

Besides the myopic focus on Gray to the exclusion of seemingly every other starter out there, I also don't understand the idea that the Yankees like him because they're losing starters, most of whom they could not rely on anyway this season, for the 2018 season, so they need somebody under control. But the price to get replacements in the off-season will be cheaper than at the deadline, so that makes no sense strategically.

It looks like the Yankees sold really really low on Justin Wilson. The Cubs gave up a lot for him.

cubs, who never quit, are one more that's checked in on sonny gray. but price appears "too steep"

A's came off Frazier/Torres package and asked for Florial/Mateo package + more. #Yankees will not make that deal either. 4 hours to go. -- @YankeesWFAN

I don't see how the yankees sold low on Wilson at all.... Chad Green has been lights out and is controlled for the next 4 years... Cessa is still developing and also under control for a while..

I think that's a better return then what the Pirates got; Candeliario is a quad-a player to some scouts.

I also don't think we appreciate how much of a return we got for Chapman. Unbelievable return.

Could you get with the Cubs goave up for Wilson for Green? No way. That's what I mean.

What does the Chapman trade have to do with this? Nothing.

At 9:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

But since you brought it up, what do the Chapters and Miller and Wilson and so many other deadline deals have in common?

The buyer overpays.

Then factor in Gray's injury issues over the years, and that's why I am very wary of any traide made now.

Whoever runs the RAB Twitter feed is an idiot.

If you want Gray, fine. But don't say it's because Tanaka may opt out. As I said if you need more starting pitchers they will be a lot cheaper in the off-season.

Two things appear obvious to me:
1.) The Yankees do not value Gray as highly as the New York media, which is all but calling Cashman stupid for not wanting to include Florial.
2.) Beane appears determined for this not to be Donaldson Part 2.

At 11:14 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Not sure I'm following you, Rich. The Yanks would never trade Chad Green + Luis Cessa for Justin Wilson today or the package of Candeliario.....

Regardless, if Yanks can get Gray with a package headlined by Mateo and NO Florial, then you do it. Mateo 3 week hot-streak doesn't overwrite 1 1/2 years of dismal performance in my eyes.

We disagree on Green and especially Cessa's value.

I do agree that I think they would do that in terms of Gray.

@Feinsand: Yankees trade alert: They have traded RHP Yefry Ramírez to Baltimore in exchange for international signing bonus pool money.
