This Week on the Blog

This past week saw the Yanks top IFA target identified, the Giants dump Stewart, the Rangers play better, and the Knicks be the Knicks. Let's take a look at the week to come.

Yankees: This past week Hal intimated that the Yanks might not be done.  And today, a flood of posters are claiming the Yanks have offered him 7/220. Hmm. Camp starts this week, and if not their agents, then the bodies of the remaining FA's are telling them it's time to get to camp. Seems like the Yanks are, perhaps, waiting for Manny to come back to them. Something could happen soon.  Meanwhile, the major league pitchers and catchers report to Tampa this week, though many are already down there and a bunch have been working over in the minor league complex.  This should be fun.

Giants: The Giants created some cap space this week by getting rid of Stewart.  There are reports today that they are not going to ask Eli to take a pay cut. So they're going to have to move more players if they want to sign anyone. I think they NFL Combine is starting at the end of this week or the beginning of the next one. And that's always interesting.  Need to check the hand sizes and the velo's on all the QB prospects.

Rangers: The NHL deadline isn't till the end of the month, so the Rangers will keep grinding till they hear an offer or three they like. I do think they have the right coach, though, and they do seem comitted to their rebuild, unlike the Knicks.

Knicks: Still mad, but Dennis Smith Jr. may be the point guard. He's a few years away from the ACL he had that worried some teams going into his draft year.  Last night he had 31-8 and I think he only used 14 shots. And the lonly other players who also did that at 21 were Magic, Jordan and  LeBron.  So thus far this year both Knox has joined LeBron in a teen achievement and Smith has now matched 3 greats at 21. Thus the pressure should be way up on Coach Fiz and the development people. They have to find a way to get consistent performance out of these young guys.  Meanhwile DeAndre Jordan is giving the Knicks the same nightly double-doubles that Kanter was, but he's playing better D.  It hasn't lead to any wins, though.

So there we are, the YANKS!!!!! are back, the Giants are offseasoning, the Rangers are slowly approaching the deadline, and the Knicks may have a guy. Have a great one!

Fwiw a quote from Hal regarding Machado:

Everybody thought he was great. Very down-to-earth, intelligent. Everybody loved his wife. She was great. My people have been around long enough that I have implicit trust in them and when Cashman and Randy tell me he’s a very good kid, then I’m going to believe them.”

I think if this happens, there will be some sort of "Manny had to approach Hal" in the details. On the other hand, why the hell was Randy there?

Because no matter what we think, they love Randy. Sad.

Berman is reporting that the Knicks were surprised they weren’t offered more because Phil Jackson was offered Booker and the pick that became Lauri Markenen (sp) in 2017. Dolan vetoed that trade.

Also unlike with Melo and Stoudemire they wouldn’t give Porzingis’s people jobs in the organization

The Yankees are apparently signing that stud from the Dominican Republic. RAB Link

Excerpt:
Badler says Dominguez will receive a signing bonus in the $5M range, which is absolutely massive. The largest signing bonus the Yankees have ever given an international amateur is the $3.2M bonus they gave Dermis Garcia in July 2014. To the best of my knowledge the Yankees have only ever given four amateur players a signing bonus worth $3M or more:

1. Andrew Brackman: $3.35M (2007 first round pick)
2. Blake Rutherford: $3.282M (2016 first round pick)
3. Dermis Garcia: $3.2M (international free agent in July 2014)
4. Gary Sanchez: $3M (international free agent in July 2009)

That's a pretty big deal. Hope he's the next Mick.

That’s a lot of money for a 16-year-old.

But it’s not my money so what the F.

I’m not in any way saying they should fire him, but I’m starting to wonder how good a coach Fizdale really is. The 3 point defense is absent, and they have zero on the court communication. It shouldn’t be this bad even if you’re under talented.

Although I don’t think they could beat a Celtics offer, it’s near certainty that any deal for Anthony Davis would include Mitchell Robinson.

@IanBegley
Knicks rookie Mitchell Robinson has agreed to work with NBA agent Jarinn Akana, per sources. Robinson, 20, has showed strong potential with New York, which selected him in the 2nd round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Robinson has switched agents twice since being drafted.

Jeter hired Posada. That’s just wrong. This will not end well for the Yankee Jeter relationship over time.

Future Marlins manager?

What makes you think the relationship between him and the Yankees will be affected?

From Schefter, obviously it has giant implications.

Breaking: Baltimore has agreement in principle to trade former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to the Broncos, league sources told ESPN.

Trade cannot be processed until new NFL league year begins Wednesday, March 13. Teams prohibited from commenting on deal or terms surrounding it.

Just curious but what implications does that have for Giants?

In my opinion, the Giants will continue to be a loser organization until they are run with some actual balls. Eli is done, overpaid and should be cut to spread his cap to procure actual talent. But we know it won’t happen because of his past and managements backwards looking philosophy.

Is Elway less inclined to trade up for a quarterback? Does Shurmur have interest in Keenum?

I basically agree with you. In a way it’s a little like the end of Ewing’s with the Knicks. He was screwed by the franchise for a while by not getting another star to play with him, and his cap number held them back as he declined.

Eli certainly had a lot of good years left when their offensive line sucked season after season. Now, no matter what Gettlenlman says there are plays Eli can no longer make that hold the offense back.

Dual mandates do not work. How many losing seasons do you have to add to your rebuild/re-load while you pretend not to rebuild.
