This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week the Knicks won a game, the Rangers kept on keeping on, the Yanks opened camp and the Giants hired two new assistant coaches. So let's take a look at this week.

Yankees: any position players that haven't reported will report this week - except Jacoby Ellsbury, who's hurt again and may not show up until mid March or late March.  The Yanks' first game is March 28th. Hmmm. Yesterday, the Yanks erased Severino's arbitration years with a new 4 year contract that comes with a team option. Reportedly, they have talked to other arbitration eligible, like Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks. We'll see if anything happens with them.  I would like to see them lock up Judge with a Stantonian deal, but he's a little jammed  up because he didn't become a regular until he was almost 25. Judge was shutdown for a hammy during his draft year, or he might have been up sooner.  He will turn 27 in April and should be entering his prime - now.  Anyway, he has no leverage, but it would be fair for them to reward their best player.

Giants: the Giants added a new OLB coach., Mike Dawson.  That's an important position in a 3-4, and except for a late season burst from Olivier Vernon they weren't getting enought passrush from the position group. They do have Lorenzo Carter and have brought back Avery Moss They also added a new assistent DB coach named Henry Baker who replace Deshea Townsend. So far they have just replaced coaches who left, but earlier did see open to adding the former Jet DC, who went to Tampa instead. So they could be open to adding upgrades.

Rangers: the Rangers, who'd won more playoff games them any other team in this deccade, blew it up last year, and announced their rebuild.  They are now in the first full year of their rebuild, and with last night's win, they're 25-24 and 8. That's pretty impressive. They might even make the playoffs this year, but, they're likely to have another sell off as the trade deadline approaches, and that could scuttle their record. Anyway, they have the right coach and are competing every night.  Chytil got benched last night because Quinn was unhappy with his compete level lately. Maybe he's growing again.

Knicks: the Knicks won their last game going into All-Star weekend, and it came on the heels of a franchise worst 18 game losing streak. Tanking hurts. By the way, the Knicks defense has gotten a lot better since they traded Hardaway. Also, though Enes wasn't playing much,  DeAndre Jordan is and is a massive defensive upgrade. Also Mitchell Robinson is healthy and foulding less and double-doubling with lots of blocks in just 20 minutes a night. Wow. Also, Kadeem Allen and John Jenkins have come up from the G, and are really contributing. I there are pieces to a really good team, now that the unwilling defenders are gone. Knox is still inconsistent, but he's also the second youngest player in the league. Here's hoping they get someone great in the lottery.

So there it is, Yanks gearing up, Giants offseasoning (next stop, the Combine), the Rangers are proobably gonna blow it up again, and the Knicks are a little more fun.  Have a great one.

"We've approached certain players," Cashman said. "We are always open for the right people to do things and find common ground, if that's at all possible. We've had conversations with some, but not all. If they lead to [multi-year deals], great. This one did. Attempts so far have failed."

I think it's foolish to turn down multi-year deals, especially if you're Judge, who will be 27 in April and is still years away for FA.

Judge is at more risk because of his “advanced” age given his ML experience. And Hicks always seems to have a nagging injury. But I suspect negotiations are ongoing.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network characterized the Harper sweepstakes as “intensified” and heating up on Sunday. A day earlier, MLB insider Jim Bowden said there’s “a lot of momentum” for Harper inking a contract with the Phillies. And Friday, Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan in Washington reported Harper had decided where he wanted to play (without the helpful report of that exact location, however).

Getting the the hammy in his draft year really screwed up Judge's early career. Btw, as of the first Bil James Historical Abstract in 1985, only Earl Averill has made the HoF when first becoming a regular at 24. College baseball and the advancement of the game to where teenagers never make the bigs anymore, it's probably changed, some, but it's tough. Judge has put up 2 HoF seqasons in his first 2 years, of course.

@RiverAveBlues
He said it's because they needed pitching and not an infielder or outfielder. They didn't sign the best FA pitcher but did sign two infielders and one outfielder.

Because passing on Harper and Machado isn't aggravating enough, they're treating fans like idiots too.

At the 1:45 mark of this video, Hal Steinbrenner addresses why Manny Machado and Bryce Harper were not priorities for the #Yankees:

I think the Giants are going defense:
Kiper:
6. New York Giants

Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

With no trades in my Mock Drafts, this is the first logical spot for a quarterback. And Haskins (6-3, 220) is the best quarterback on my board. Easy choice. Yes, he only started 14 games at Ohio State, but he’s a smooth thrower with an extremely high ceiling. Something to note if the Giants trade up to make sure they get their guy: They don’t have a third-round pick after using it on cornerback Sam Beal in last year’s supplemental draft. That means if they give up their second-rounder and future choices to jump a few spots, they won’t be on the clock again until Day 3. This is a huge pick for GM Dave Gettleman.

At 7:55 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They could trade a future pick, but I don't think they'll trade up. He's a much better thrower of the football than Sam Darnold.

With some of the league's biggest power brokers coming together this past weekend in Charlotte for the NBA All-Star Game, rumors are swirling that James Dolan is looking for offers to buy the Knicks from him.
According to Bill Simmons of The Ringer, via Forbes, Knicks owner James Dolan is courting offers for the team and is seeking a price point of $5 billion for the franchise itself, a number Simmons does not expect for Dolan to fetch.
“Multiple people told me this, who know things. James Dolan is courting offers for the Knicks,” Simmons said. “It’s happening. It’s on. It’s go-time. He’s courting offers for the Knicks. That’s what I heard at All-Star weekend from people I trust.”

I would like a self-made billionaire with a passion to win and knows that she/he needs to delegate power to experienced, proven winners.

Dolan has denied this.

I just so a “no discussions” attribution to MSG on the Simmons’s report on the ESPN chyron. That’s not a denial.

Good spot for him. Money is great, it seems like a cool town and they have the type of farm where they could compete quickly.

No way Harper doesn’t get what he wants now.

Opt out after the fifth year. No way should he opt out.

So while John Henry says spending more helps, Hal is like we spend but ...

So glad he went to the Padres. Dont need him on his team. Now Andujar can relax and improve his defense.

At 10:15 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Heh

At 10:28 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Andujar could put up very comparable offensive seasons going forward.

At 10:43 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Just as with Corbin I wanted both Andujar and Machado and I wanted both Corbin and Paxson.

At 10:49 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I wanted bot Judge and Stanton and we got them. Importantly, it looks like the Yanks are going to commit to Didi now, unless they think Gleyber is still a natural SS.

Keeping Didi long-term.

I only like him when he walks, but agree, thought they had to move on as that Gleyber would be the heir.

This may merely reflect what lawyers call plausible deniability, allowing him to maintain the requisite distance from his agent’s possible negotiations that as of yet don’t require a decision from him.

At 12:55 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Hal at least wants a top-tier farm system. But they’re banking on a lot of ifs this season:
-Didi comes back at some point and is healthy/productive
-Tulo returns to form
-DJ LeMahieu is productive
-CC and Happ are good No. 4-5 starters and Paxton stays healthy
-Frazier is past his concussion issues and can at least spell Gardner in left

We’ll see how the strategy pays off.

At 1:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The problem is that their primary competition is spending more. No matter what kind of business you run, that’s something you have to react to if you want to beat them out.

Of course THEY CAN STILL WIN, but they have comparable if not superior revenue streams as the Red Sox but they don’t care.

At 2:32 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Final word on this shit, Corbin was the guy to get (granted, as I have acknowledged there’s non-trivial risk with any pitcher, especially when he has already been injured). But a pitching staff with four guys Severino Paxton Corbin Tanaka (not even ranking them) could have been pretty awesome, and would’ve stood out from the rotations they have put together for many years.

At 2:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

You hate Happ, I don't and believe he will match Corbin's performance over the next two seasons. That said, the Yanks are brugeoning with sick pitching talent on the farm, and paying Corbin like an ace would have disbalanced the next few staffs because he wouldn't be the best pitcher on the team. After this year CC will be gone, then we'll see what happens. Pitchers in the system could start moving really fast this year.

It’s not personal!!

Clint Frazier may be the impact bat (with health and opportunity) that they didn’t add in FA.

Frazier should be in SWB playing LF everyday. He wont get that opportunity in NY until someone goes down with an injury.

Could be a nice trade chip if he does well come trade deadline depending on the need at the trade deadline.

At 8:24 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think if Clint has a great Spring he'll make the team.

If he does he needs to play every day.

The Knicks’ two-year deal with John Jenkins is not fully guaranteed for 2019-2020, per ESPN sources. Jenkins signed a 10-day contract with the Knicks earlier this month.

At 8:49 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Not quite what it seems:

His deal will keep him in the fold through the remainder of the season, but Jenkins may need to finish the campaign on a high note to stick around in 2019-20. His contract for next season isn't guaranteed but has an early trigger date, giving the team an easy out if they don't view Jenkins as part of their plans

Bird at first, Voit at DH, Stanton in left please.

Also, I think part of the reason they signed LeMahieu is they plan on moving Torres to short in 2020 and letting Didi walk. Think they’ll eventually extend Hicks.
