This Week on the Blog

Alright, this week saw the Yanks wrap up their draft, and begin their IFA signings, as well as learning more of what they already know about Sonny Gray.  The Knicks start their short Summer League schedule today. The Rangers didn't get much done in the first days of FA, which is fine.  And the Giants are less than three weeks away from starting trainding camp.  Let's take a look at this week.

Yankees: the Yanks have DFA'd David Hale and this time they are calling up Clint Frazier instead of another pitcher.  Let's hope they play him everyday and not just have play one and sit two.  In other news, they really have to do something about the Sonny Gray situation. For reasons they can't control he's become useless, and rolling him out there creates losses - and those can't be tolerated.  In other news, I think they ended up signing 33 or 34 out of 40 draft picks.  That's a far cry from last year, when they signed about 24. Let's see who pops from this one.  The Yanks are now in the easy half of their schedule and it would be good if they made it look that way.

Knicks: The Knicks start their SL schedule in about 5 hours in Vegas. Though Coach Fiz is not coaching the team, Mike Miller is and it should be Fiz's system. Miller sure seems useful. It will give us our first looks at Knox, Robinson and Trier.  Hopefully, Knox looks like a lottery pick right off the bat, and I'm sure we're all hoping Robinson does, too. Trier is an older guy who might excel. We'll also get a first look at bigger, thicker, more aggressing Frank. Btw, it's cool that guys like Mudiay, who can't play during SL, is out in Vegas working out with the team. Fiz is talking about brining in another veteran, but they don't even have contract room for Mitchell Robinson yet, so I don't know how that will work.

Rangers: The Rangers still have their RFA's to finish signing or otherwise dispose of. Late in the week it looked like the Rangers would be the third team in a Tampa/Ottowa deal, but nothing came of it.  I wonder if the market is still being slowed by big names not moving.  I thought the Tavares deal would open things up, but it sure hasn't for the Rangers.

Giants: The Giants are keeping things quiet on most fronts as training camp approaches. As we get closer, to camp, I wouldn't be surprised if OBJ signs his Giant for Life deal.

So, there we are.  The Yanks have to stop losing to bad teams, the Knicks have to look like a team, the Rangers need to keep rebuidling. and the Giants have to stay out of the news till camp.  Have a great one!

The Jenkins tragedy took place in the town where I grew up. In a perverse way that signifies progress because in the ‘60s prospective African-American buyers were supposedly informed they weren’t welcome, including, the rumor was, Elston Howard. In fact, my parents told me that in the ‘40s, there was a sign on a upcoming subdivision that read: “No blacks, dogs, or Jews”

So again, since that should not be America, it’s great that the only barrier to entry is financing. And really, this town is below Jenkins’ means

Gardner leading off versus a lefty again. Clint on the bench because... reasons?

I'd like to ask Boone at what point does actual production take precedent over feelings.

You have to wonder if Frazier arrived in time. Having said that. Gardy is the problem, not Hicks.

Gary Sanchez caught a bullpen today and went through 2 rounds of BP. Feels good. Still needs to run bases. Said if it were up to him he’d be back before ASB. Time will tell if #yankees comply

Hicks has earned his spot. Gardner has not. But I’m not sure that Boone is much more than a front man.

What are they going to do about not hitting with runners in scoring position?

The other thing is isnt it time to try Higgy with Gray?

At 8:08 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Although whether or not they want to admit it publicly, continuing to start Gray may be accelerating his regression.

At 8:18 AM, Blogger Rich said...

If this happens I would have trouble rooting for them

Bowden says if the yanks dropped Sheffield , Florial , Frazier , Swanson on the door for Degrom then the Mets would be crazy to not do that

At 8:29 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I actually think we now have 3 better OF's than Frazier and Florial in the system, maybe even 4 depending on what we see from Raimfer. I think Ryder Green is a taller Clint Frazier. What would hurt the most is losing Justus and that's because he's our only super high upside lefty. We have a ton of Swansons.

At 8:29 AM, Anonymous Yankyfan said...

Loved both Knicks picks...

At 8:30 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Having said that, I would not move them for a pitcher in his 30s. I don't think Cash would, either.

At 8:55 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Which one of you is which?

And I disagree about outfielders in the system being better than Frazier or even outfielders who aren’t Judge or Stanton being better than him on the major-league roster

At 8:57 AM, Blogger Rich said...

But if I was going to trade him it wouldn’t be for a pitcher because they’re too fragile and I don’t trust Cashman.

At 9:38 AM, Anonymous Yankyfan said...

If i could get Richards on the cheap ,I would limit his innings and go from there. Rich i agree ...Going big on a Fragile arm might not be our best move.

German was really good.

At 12:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Florial is better than Frazier, Periera seems better than Florial, Cabello aslo seems better than Florial and Raimpher is supposed to be the best of the Super 3, but he hasn't played yet. Also, Ryder Green does seem like a bigger Clint.

At 12:36 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

German was outstanding. That's when he looks like our #2. It's those other times, and their frequency that haven't shown him to be a solution yet.

At 12:46 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Tyler Wade is FAST!

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Too much projection at that level vs Frazier’s actual performance.

Beyond that, I don’t want deGrom at any realistic price.

At 1:00 PM, Blogger Rich said...

At 1:00 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Big win!

At 1:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

All are better fielders, Cabello is drawing Trout comps. There's also Stanley Rosario and Anthony Garcia who are power hitting corner OF's. Everyone else, from Florial through Salinas is a real CF. Frazier is not.

At 1:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cabello isn’t even 18. So much can happen both positively and negatively over the next few years.

I think you have made the case to trade Florial, not Frazier.

Because despite a great month, Hicks has never been consistent or healthy, and Gardner, despite this series, is 35 and in decline.

They need help much sooner than what teenagers are likely to offer.

This team’s offensive weakness is AVG. If Frazier can provide that, they need him now.

At 1:43 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Frazier is a 24.68 K% guy in his minor-league career and has a .275 lifetime MiLB average, so I’m not sure he doesn’t fit the profile of what the team already has in the outfield. That’s not to say he shouldn’t be up and playing regularly, but I don’t get the indication he’s destined to be a >.300 hitter. I do think he’ll be a good player, but he’s not untouchable IMO.

At 1:47 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Also, like I said before, I would offer Hicks 3/$30M this offseason and see if he bites. I would also let Gardner walk.

At 2:47 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I just don't think Frazier's upside is .900 OPS. I think he's a corner of with maybe a 30 homer peak, unless many thing about him change, including too much top hand. That said he should be in the bigs, but there's no room in our starting corners.

Severino, CC, Tanaka and Herman. Is that really that bad? So the start “urgency” is really only because Gray has been completely unreliable.

Cashman should keep that in mind and when he thinks about what he wants to give up for a starter.

I think they should get the best starter they can for Didi and stuff.

Torres plays shortstop and we have ample candidates at second.

Loaisiga (shoulder) received a cortisone shot and will be shut down for a few weeks, Marc Carig of The Athletic New York reports.

No structural damage was found, but the talented rookie is dealing with inflammation. There's a chance that even though this shoulder injury will cost Loaisiga at least a month in the middle of the season, it may not actually impact his total innings pitched in 2018, as he has thrown 63 innings between the minors and majors, and only threw 32.2 innings in 2017. He will miss most if not all of July, and will then have to go on a rehab assignment before potentially rejoining the big-league club in mid-to-late August.

Didi is a frustrating hitter to watch, although granted he is the best defensive SS they have had in decades.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Dude starting for the O’s in the first game entered it with an ERA close to 8. At some point, this offense needs to punish these bad pitchers/teams like the team up north is doing, it it wants to remain in AL East contention.

I just don’t see any team telling him he can play short. He isn’t good there, while he’s good at third. The advanced defensive metrics on Fangraphs back that up.

I hate Gardner v. LHP

If they acquire a starter, who leaves the rotation? If it’s not Gray, what’s the point.

Offense will decide their future. With Torres and Sanchez out, Drury and Frazier are obviously pressing, trying to force their way into the mix, but fair or not, not everyone gets an extended chance.

Whether they trade for pitching or offense the biggest weakness on this team is Gray. That needs to be faced.

At 8:29 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We are now 40 and 3 when we get a quality start. Thus we need consistent quality starts, and they are our best determinant. Gray cant do it.

At 11:35 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

At 3:43 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

At 4:37 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Layoffs have tended to benefit him.

At 5:50 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Again I don’t think they have real interest in Machado because it would cause a lot of disruption in season. He reiterated that he’s a shortstop and I see no reason to disbelieve him at this point.

I’m fine with trading Didi because I think he’s limited offensively, and certainly not a top of the order bar like they pretend he is, but is that something you want to do in season.

I’m very skeptical.

The counterpoint would be that Cashman seems to like to turn heads with his moves, so there’s that.

And he’s kind the player I would trade Frazier for, but I would not trade Andujar. Not that he’s not much better than him at this point maybe always but I just have a good feeling about the kid.

So Didi would have to be part of the deal or part of another deal to make room.

At 10:19 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Except for range, and you could substitute upcoming price, this is why you trade Didi not cost-controlled Andujar. Typical moronic stuff.

You can’t pay everybody 20+ million a year.

At 10:54 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Would not surprise me to see Andujar traded eventhough he is a really good young player with a guy like Drury on the team.

Package up Andujar and Frazier + for Degrom.

At 11:17 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Do you think Cashman is that stupid?

At 11:52 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Depends on the return. All relative to cost

At 12:11 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Thing is, Rich, they could afford it. They've chosen not to in order to reset the tax, and it's cost them good players like Scherzer and Lester. Since the mid-2000s, revenue has increased exponentially, yet the payroll has remained around the $200M mark. If they do reset the tax this offseason, then the team better turn around and spare no expense. Fans want a championship, and it's time this team start acting like it's the Yankees.

At 12:41 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t trade position players for inherently fragile pitchers, especially the crosstown rivals especially with a pitcher who has probably peaked.

As for Scherzer, when he was truly well priced Cashman enables a deal and all we got back was Granderson who was already beginning his decline.

Whatever pitcher they get, as I’ve said, does he replace Grat? If not this is still a problem.

At 12:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Sorry for being repetitive, the Didi is the player who is about to get more expensive and is deeply flawed. That’s my big chip

At 1:27 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree they should let Didi walk. Given the lack of a true CFer being ready, I would see if Hicks would take a reasonable short-term deal. While he may lack the contact ability of Torres, Hicks otherwise compares well to him from an athletic standpoint.

My overall point was how this team operates. They were willing to acquire Gray due to his reasonable price tag, whereas they wanted nothing to do with Verlander when he cleared waivers last summer. Think he wouldn’t have been valuable to the staff?

At 1:43 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Rothschild wouldn’t ha e fixed Verlander anyway, but I get your point.

When we talk about the chances the players get the patience that Walker is getting is nauseating; it’s Brian Roberts and Steven Drew all over again.

The common theme: this GM will not admit mistakes even when it keeps punching him in the face

At 3:43 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Happ isn’t going to help if he’s replacing German;
The Yankees continue to hold Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ in high regard and have him near the top of their list of “realistic” trade targets as the deadline approaches, tweets Fancred’s Jon Heyman. (Notably, Heyman adds that the Yankees don’t consider either Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard to fall into that “realistic” category.) However, to this point, the Yankees believe the asking price on Happ to be too high for talks to become serious.
