This Week on the Blog
This week has seen the Yanks run out a house money lineup that was abolutely Girardian in an embarrassing loss, then turn around a punch Boston right in the face. The Rangers ran their prospect cap. The Knicks announced their Vegas lineup, and the Giants were more or less distracted to something involving somebody's relative. More stuff coming right up this week, let's take a look.
Yankees: The Yanks will continue to slug it out with the Sox this weekend. Today's game has a terrible SP matchup, but, you never know in these games. The big news this week will come Monday, when the Yanks begin to introduce their 2018 IFA class. They've consistently been associated with Cuban RHP Osiel Rodriguez, and he's been throwing 96 at 16, which is nice, but we'll see what else they've got. HC17 has been going strong in short season, and it will be interesting to see if the Yanks again make trades for more IFA room.
Giants: the Giants are still on break, but they have attended all the pro-days for the the Supplemental Draft prospets. I'm hoping they'll take a run at CB Sam Beal during same.
Knicks: NBA free agency opens tomorrow, but then they have to week long accounting period or whatever before anything becomes official. Perry has said the Knicks would not be doing anyting big, and I believe him They are currently under the cap and have all of their exceptions. Also, if something comes up, they can always stretch Noah.
Rangers: Likewise, NHL Free Agency opens tomorrow, and the John Tavares decision as well as some possible big target trades, seem to have slowed things down for the Rangers. Tavares is supposed to announce today, and might even have announced while I've been doing this. In the meantime, the Rangers have a bunch of RFA's they have to deal with, including Skjei. Coming out of the draft it seemed like they had a trade or two linedup for their current RFA's, but again, it's been slowed by the uncertainty at the top of the market. The prospects have now taken off, and we'll see who's on the Traverse City roster by the end of Summer.
So there it is, Yanks/Sox and an unveiling, Giants doing due dilligence. And the Knicks and Rangers look like they'll be pretty far under the radar in free agency, but neither is cap strapped. Have a great one, people.

Sonny Gray must go the other way in any trade for a starter.
Fuck Gray. Stop the fact-free bullshit that Cashman can trade for top starting pitchers. Stop the fact-free bullshit that German and Lasagna are inferior to him. Stop the fact-free bullshit that he’s comfortable with Romine.
I’m wrong all the time. I’m not wrong about the foregoing.
It has nothing to do with any personal catcher magic. He just isn’t cut out for NYC. It happens. They need to admit it and plan accordingly.
Boston has a great lineup

So CC is Cy Young. You sound like a parody account.
Phil thank you for all that to do on this blog. Letting you know I will no longer post here. I don’t need my opinions ridiculed. By Martin rich or anyone else.
I wish everyone all the best of health and happiness.
Michael, please don't quit while we're down and I value you a great deal. During games, especially, people fly off the handle. And that should be okay about this place, and everyone should realize that what is said during a game must not be taken as seriously as something said during an offseason conversation, or the interesting week we have ahead of us with the Rangers, Yanks and Knicks.
Btw, henceforth, if you feel beleagured here, just post the word "PEACE" and I'd appreciate it if the hopped up party would say peace or words signalling bygones right back. Fighting on the internet is the curse of our times, and I don't want it here, debates are fun, personal stuff is not.
This better mark the downpoint of the season, And it would be good if we never saw Sonny Gray in the rotation again.
I was talking about yf, Michael
The Red Sox just caled for a fair/foul review while up 10-0 in the top of the 9th.
Yeah, Michael, I didn’t think Rich’s post was directed at you. :-)
Boston does not have a great lineup. Betts and Martinez are great. Benitendi is very good. Their SS is solid. The rest is very pedestrian. Gray simply isn’t cut out for this team, and not even Romine can offset that reality.
Yanks really haven't started hitting yet this year. Every time I think the floodgates are open, they close back up.
It’s Sale, and their starter put them in a hole. That’s a difficult combination to overcome.
@williamnyy23
Nothing frustrating about Sonny Gray because he looks hittable. What's maddening is he is a Yankee (instead of Verlander, for example) because of how much money he makes, not how well he pitches.
This is a good point. I hope after the tax resets this offseason that this penny-pinching nonsense ends.
They also don't really seem to have a good strategy from Sale.
BTW, I have had it with Boone sitting the guy who just hit 2 homers in the next game. He did it to Austin 2x and to Bird tonight and I think to someone else.
Michael King went 9 with 11K's tonight for Trenton.
In some ways, Boone is just a more likable Girardi.
My concern is that Cashman can’t admit his Gray mistake and overcompensates by making a bigger trade for a name SP.
Romine is getting an MRI on his hamstring tomorrow.
Degrom would be great but more likely a Happp or Hamels.
Boston struggles against LHP.
MRI was negative, he's day to day.
deGrom would be GM malpractice.
Gray has to be the centerpiece of any trade. He is a deer in the headlights here.
Rich, just curious, why would DeGrom be GM malpractice? Not that I think the Mets would trade him to the Yankees, mind you.
Because it’s lazy to completely mortgage the future by paying not only a buyer who is a contender premium: but also a crosstown rival premium: and as I alluded to above, we have a GM who is well aware of what a bad trade he made for Gray, and would like to get the focus on a bigger trade.
It’s easy to burn your future for the present. The mediiots and many fans will love it; instant gratification is a thing.
They have the pieces (except for Kenny Rogers, oh wait, I mean Sonny Gray), to be really good for a long time. The only people who can F it up is them.
If you want to improve the team, trade veterans who have topped out like Didi and Hicks, who will soon be no longer cheap.
This team needs more versatile hitters who can make adjustments far more than they need pitching.
The relentless pursuit of pitching is a fool’s errand.
Yankees will go as deep into October as their pitching carries them.
Teams like Houston and Boston will be tough to beat.
Trades will happen so people need to accept the reality if it.
Yankees have a ton of kids and you can't prospect hug them otherwise they turn into the likes of a Montero or a Refsnyder.
Whatever.
Dougie McBuckets got 3/22 from Indiana. I’m shocked, but maybe I’m wrong.

As free agency opens, there is mutual interest between Mario Hezonja and the Knicks, sources say. Hezonja has multiple suitors and the Knicks are looking to offer short-term contracts to maintain cap space for 2019. Sacramento also has interest in Hezonja.
The Knicks are one of the teams that's reached out to veteran forward Amir Johnson on the first night of free agency, per ESPN sources. New York has been consistent in telling agents it strongly prefers to sign players one-year deals this summer.
It’s hard to have confidence in the way your team is run when Gray will start over twi far better pitchers:
Masahiro Tanaka is expected to make a minor league rehab start during the week and will likely then return to the rotation. When he returns, either Domingo German or Jonathan Loaisiga figures to go. Boone was asked what might play into the decision about who will stick around.
“I don’t know if it’s a pitch-off,’’ Boone said. “German has more experience in both roles [starting and relieving]. He’s more built-up.”
Boone noted Loaisiga — slated to start Monday, followed by German on Tuesday — pitched just 32 innings in the minors last season so his workload will be monitored more closely.

Austin Romine exited the game with hamstring tightness in the seventh inning and is day-to-day. The Yankees can not afford to lose another catcher. Romine went 0-for-1 with a walk and is 1-for-13 (.077) since taking over as the starting catcher. Also, runners are 6-for-6 stealing bases again him. At least stolen bases are not passed balls? I hope everyone who complained about Gary earlier this year has taken it back already.
Peeps who prefer Romine over Sanchez are reminiscent of those who wanted Brosius over A-Rod, or ad one blog memorably called them, the psychotic segment of the fanbase.
They wouldn’t need to acquire a starter at all If Gray was pitching like he’s capable of. Doubt he is still here in October.
From Bronx Bomber Ball website with a trade proposal.
The Trade: San Diego Padres send LHP Brad Hand to the New York Yankees for RHP Albert Abreu INF Brandon Drury, Billy McKinney OF/1B.
That would be tremendous if this happened but doubt Padres accept this.
Gray should disappear.
I'm not seeing good trade targets for the Yanks.
I’m not either. Nothing that screams “acquire me” anyway.
Frazier is screaming play me. And they need him v LHP.
Severino, Degrom and Tanaka in a short series......I will take that.
Degrom is over 30 and his velo has been down over his past few starts, including yesterday. We've seen this kind of crap before.
And btw, the reason to acquire or not acquire should be based on whether or not it would make it appreciably easier to win the East and avoid a wildcard game.
I will take a bourbon neat.
Suzyn LOVES the Sawx.
Cant wait for the IFA signing period to begin tomorrow. Wonder how many kids Yanks will actually sign.
LeBron is a Laker.
Geography over everything.
ALL RISE!!!!!!!!!!
Torres...
Hicks as well.
These three in the ESPN booth never stop talking.
Hicks again.
Price is getting beat up. He’s not what he was. But unlike Gray he tries to battle rather than go belly up.
So happy for Higgy.
Knicks signed Hezonja, and there's a new post about that.
Me too.
Hicks hits his third!
Trade him now.
Tomorrow we'll see the start of the new IFA class!
They can mash decent pitching, but they their biggest weakness is they lack hitters who can make adjustments so they can hit all pitching.
Hicks is good.
https://nypost.com/2018/07/02/yankees-getting-surge-from-least-obvious-player/
“He’s been terrific,’’ Aaron Boone said of Hicks, who hit leadoff again, as he’s frequently done lately against lefty starters.
“He controls the strike zone from both sides of the plate. He’s one of those guys that make the pitcher work really hard. And we’ve seen the power come on here — especially right-handed. He’s hit some really big shots. We need it.”
