This Week on the Blog

Alright, the Yanks finished the week in the tank, but guys are breaking out down on the farm. The Giants are off for another 4+ weeks so the beats are recycling OBJ holdout stories.  The Knicks and Rangers went unicorn hunting and may have found some. Let's take a look at this week.

Yankees: At the very end of this week, 7/2, the Yanks will announce their initial 2018 IFA class.  There could be pitchers at the top of it.  Last year's kids like Everson Pereira are already homering.  So it's always an interesting day. I know we are all bracing for a trade, and it wouldn't surprise me if it came sooner than later, the roster is a little problematic because, for example, Drury should be up, but there's no place to play him.  And I don't know what the plan is for Clint Frazier, but the Yanks O has been awful over the last 2 games and 8 innings and they're not letting Clint get in there. Anyway, I thought the Jays moving Snell from today to tomorrow might have implied that that's the trade we're close on. Who knows?  Just brace yourselves.

Giants: The Giants were at the pro-day for VaTech CB Adonis Alexander and are presumably also interested in Sam Beal. Beyond that, they may be working on OBJ's extension or they might let that go until camp.  So no real news, but I'm sure we all continue to wish Dave G a speedy and full recovery.

Knicks: The Knicks are getting interesting. They absolutely made the right move passing on Porter for Knox. Porter might not even play this year, and Knox is improving in the same ways that KAT did when he got out of Kentucky.  And the Knicks might have also gotten a second Lottery type talent when they took star crossed C Mitchell Robinson in the second round. If these guys hit their ceilings, the Knicks will be vastly improved. Oh, and KP called them.

Something interesting that is going on, that I didn't know the players union even allowed, is that a bunch of the Knicks are already practicing with Coach Fizdale in Westchester, and Knox and Robinson are expected to join them right away.  Oh, and while we weren't looking the Knicks hired all of their assistant coaches.  They are Keith Smart, Pat Sullivan, Jud Beuchler and Royal Ivey. So they're probable up in Westchester, too. Fizdale talking about how they now had good player development people, I don't know who those people are, but it would be a very good thing if it's true. Interesting time for the Knicks,

And free agency and trading all starts this week.

Rangers:  The Rangers perplexed both fans and pundits over this weekends draft. But if you watched their pre-draft videos, they talked about skating, skil and character, and they took iterations of all three of those values, throughout their nine non goalie picks. They weren't looking for McIlrath type, nor even an Andersson type necessarily.  They took a lot of kids who'd played against men. Now, I don't know if that was just happenstance of where the picks were, or if that, like International Play is something they now seek.

Just as the Knicks surprised people by taking taking Kevin Knox over injured Michael Porter Jr.,  the Ranger challenged the orthodoxt by taking Vitali Kravtsov over big time scorer Oliver Wahlstrom whom the Islanders grabbed a few picks later - the Islanders. Kravstov seems more freakishly talented on tape, and his highlights are all against men. Wahlstrom has great tape, too, and tons of production, but that was all against other kids. I don't know how they squared this, but the Rangers apparently squared in Kravstov's favor months ago. He was playing in the KHL as a 16 or 17 year old, which I don't think Buch or any of our other Russian players have done. He might end up being like OBJ or Aaron Judge, where people will wonder how he fell to nine. I hope they don't start him out on the third or fourth line.  Btw, let's call him VK.

Also, I think their annual Prospect Camp is starting any day now, and Chytil will be there, so I'd like to see them play together to see if it's a thing.

Also the Rangers will either start signing their RFA's or trading them this week. A couple of years ago they traded Brassard on the eve of free agency.  We'll see if something like that happens again.

Also, on June 30 assistants with other teams will be free to move to the Rangers and that seems like something they've been waiting on.

So there it is, a player development and player acquisition week.  No bad trades please, and enjoy it people.

Walker again and still no Frazier. Boone has some Girardi in him, and it’s stubbornness for the status quo, reality be damned.

Cessa starting on Wednesday.

If the game is in Philly, perhaps Cessa is starting because he used to be a hitter. And I don't know where the Frazier craziness is coming from, but I have a sick feeling it's trade related. And it could be for Snell, and no playing him this weekend.

Gardner can't hit lefties but is OPS'ing .781 against righties. Hicks, meanwhile, has a .931 OPS against lefties and a .745 OPS against righties.

The solution to getting Frazier in the lineup is obvious, but for whatever reason, they aren't doing it.

If "Boone has some Girardi in him," then I think the common thread is their boss. I'm thinking the lineup is a reflection of Cashman more than the manager.

Could be.

An easy move would seem to be getting rid of Walker and bring up Drury.

Where would they be without Andujar? Yet they made a trade so that he would be (at least temporarily) blocked.

So Frazier got f’d by this effed up stadium, they’re morons if they don’t play him every freaking day

Going to have to freaking DL Sanchez

And the myth that Romine is an MLB starting catcher is gonna get exposed in a big way.

I didn’t read it but my wife said that he sort of expressed unhappiness about being a back up recently?

I am with Mike. There is no way that starting Gardy and Hicks most days in left field and centerfield presents their best lineup. And as I said, time for Walker to go. He can’t do it playing this infrequently

And keeping Shreve on the roster should be a fireable freaking offense

At 2:33 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I’m not sure what’s more inexcusable: the fact Shreve is still on the team or the fact that Frazier isn’t playing.

At 2:34 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I think it’s Shreve. He’s not a major leaguer and he’s only on the roster because he throws with his left hand and that’s a sign of stupidity

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I hate that Frazier isn’t playing. All the arguments in support of Hicks (and I’m nearly 100% sure that Cashman subscribes to them) have to do with his defense and the accompanying impact on WAR but we really don’t know what Frazier is going to be offensively and defensively in major-league baseball, and there’s a chance that it’s really really good. Ni matter the home run numbers this offense isn’t versatile enough to overlook his talent.

Love to get Snell but it will take Frazier + to get him.

At 2:41 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah that would be dumb

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I would trade Gray for him.

At 2:57 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Looks like Sanchez will be out for a while. Need to call Miami amd see what it takes to get Realmuto.

At 3:04 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They can survive a month without him. It stinks he's out, but there are bigger concerns.

At 3:20 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Drury, Frazier and Tyler Wade who is finally back to normal are all grumbling about belonging in the majors.

At 4:25 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Why do you always want to make trades?

Now he is denying it...

Shreve - His last five outings: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3 HR. He’s allowed 14 runs on 21 hits and 11 walks in his last 14 innings.

At 7:50 PM, Blogger Rich said...

He’d be a fool to opt out

At 7:57 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rich, who are you asking about wanting to make trades?

At 6:17 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So today’s mediot meme is which top pitching prospects they will trade. Why is patience so hard? They might have traded Severino or Torres or Judge if they were truly competitive a few years ago.

At 7:19 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Forgive me for trying to improve the club.

We all know how the Yankees operate and they will trade prospects. Cant keep them all before they fizzle out.

At 8:05 AM, Blogger Rich said...

“Improving” the club short-term can be illusory, because it can impose significant longer-term costs and limit their ultimate ceiling.

Trading redundancy and trading Frazier are two different things.

At 8:19 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Getting young players for Frazier is not a short term mindset.

I mentioned a young SP such as Snell as an example.

At 8:48 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Yes it is because this offense is demonstrating how flawed it is. Too few players adjust their approach to the count and game situation, and too few players hit for average. Frazier does. Also, Gardner and Hicks are too similar and that is one too many of that type.

Finally, Gray has been a massive disappointment like most of the supposed top of the rotation starters Cashman has traded for or attempted to trade for.

So stay away from weakness and focus on strength.

Development is now their strength.

At 8:56 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Sending Frazier for yet another SP who can't hack it in New York City is wasting an asset.

At 9:15 AM, Blogger Rich said...

(This seems like posturing i. negotiations to me, and that’s not good)

The Yankees GM, though, would prefer not to part with Clint Frazier to get another impact piece in the rotation.

"We're lucky to have him," Cashman said of Frazier. "He's getting better. He's a toolbox that every year since we've gotten him he's exponentially improved."

...

"We'd like to hold on to him," Cashman said while suggesting there could very well be a more significant role for Frazier over time. "I know he's someone that we're going to get asked a lot about, and so far we've been able to say no and hand-check everything, but I'm a big Clint Frazier fan."

At 12:24 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cashman pulling sone stupid roster shit.

At 12:24 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Some

At 12:35 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Did they notice their m” mediocre team AVG, or are blinded by some preconceived ideas about the talent of some overrated players?

At 12:51 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The only reason Shreve hasn’t been replaced is due to his handedness. This front office is good at a lot of things. Roster management is not one of them.

At 12:53 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Let Frazier play everyday on SWB since he went play everyday here.

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Rich said...

No

At 1:12 PM, Blogger Rich said...

There are inferior players playing ahead of Frazier. That’s stupid.
