The Yankee 2018-19 IFA Class Begins

Okay, the signing period just started about 2 hours ago, but the Yanks are already credited with 8 signings. Pictured in future Yankee Ace Osiel Rodriguez, and fireballing RHP out of Cuba.  They also signed Denny Larrondo, another RHP out of Cuba. They also bagged both catchers, Antonio Gomez and Augustin Ramirez. Antonio is from Venezuela and Augustin if from the DR. Gomez may have the highest power ceiling of any C we've signed since El Gary. They also grabbed Dominican RHP Juan Carela and OF Mauro Bonifacio. A pair of shortstops from the DR, Maikol Eskotto and Marcos Cabrerra form the rest of the ones who've been announced in the early going. OF Kevin Alcantara is also linkied with the Yankees, but he doesn't turn 16 till July 12.

UPDATE:  Osiel is a guy you should be really excited about. Not only does he touch 96-7, he also has a wipeout slider, a change and split and I think a curveball. In other words, he's a classic "kitchen sink" Cuban pitcher in the El Tiante-El Duque mold, with a little more gas. These guys are not only big winners, but they are wildlu fun to watch work.

Also, Mauro Bonifacio was a top prospect from last year's class, but, I would assume for financial reasons, wasn't signed till today. So, he would have been part of HC17 if the pool money had been enough.

Larrondo started out as a two player, SS and P, but has just been pitching lately.  He has a strong arm and has topped out around 94 and has the advanced feel for a change.  Not a bad place to start.

UPDATE 2: Yanks just signed another Dominican SS, Dayro Perez.

UPDATE 3: They also signed Luis Severino's 19 year old brother, Rafael, as well as C Kevin "We'll see if he's a Macho Man" Camacho.

We are now LOADED at C below A ball.

UPDATE 4: The Yanks have signed C Jesus Rodriguez and LHP Miguel Vargas both from VZ.

UPDATE 5: Yanks have also signed D'Vaughn Knowles, OF, Bahamas (!), Jose Dario Chambuco RHP VZ,  Christopher Familia, Nicolas Garcia, Starling Perez, and Ignacio Radney, I think they are all pitchers, but I'm not sure.

I’ve never seen a player get more love over a shorter sample size of production than Hicks.

At 9:08 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He seems to have 2 settings. Place holder or Elite CF and not much in between. He's finally at that elite level he achieved last year before his first injury. Let's see how long it lasts.

Great deal for Cashman only parting with Murphy for him.

He should keep the spot warm for Florial.

At 9:28 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Florial might be trade bait, since Cabello, Salinas and Everson are all ahead of where he was 2 years ago.

At 9:31 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Btw, I feel like all this Hicks stuff is really about Clint Frazier. Rich wants him up and YF wants to trade him for pitching. Is that about the size of things?

At 9:41 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I actually wouldn’t mind them offering 3/$30M for Hicks so he can hold down center a little longer and wait for the other prospects to arrive. I’m assuming, of course, they decline Gardner’s option, which I think is likely.

At 9:52 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

I don't honestly want to trade Frazier with Gardner's option for next year as he turns 35 in August.

I just feel he is the best and most valuable trade chip that is major league ready to get a top arm like a Degrom or Snell.

With Harper the big prize in free agency (who I don't want) but can see the Yankees signing in the offseason.

Teams want guys like Frazier over Hicks.

At 10:58 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

How do we get Jon Gray?

At 11:27 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think AVG is this team’s weakness/vulnerability and that’s why they ate vulnerable to inconsistent production. Frazier may offer a big boost in that area.

Pitching is fragile and expensive. That’s why I don’t want to trade young assets.

I would gladly trade Gray, Drury and a few others.

At 2:25 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yanks having another big day in IFA.

At 2:55 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I’m not sure it works this way, but:

Here's what Rafael Severino's big brother said about him: "He knows how to pitch. He doesn't throw that hard, but he's real skinny. When he gets stronger, he's going to throw hard."

At 4:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

It's been working that way in the Yankee system for about the past 5 years. Some fans call it the Yankee Velocity Academy. Of course, Sevy is great because he's driven to be. We'll see if his brother can match his drive.

At 4:20 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Severino said Rafael has been working out at the International Prospect League academy in Santo Domingo, and that he throws 88-89 mph with a slider, changeup and sinker. Severino said the repertoire is more advanced than what he had at the same age.

At 4:28 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Judge is heating up.

At 5:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cousins to GS for 1yr. What’s the opportunity of parity?

I am merely referring to the disconnect between strength and velo absent fast twitch muscle fibers.

At 7:01 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Raf has also been hanging out in the Yankee Academy all season, so who knows what his velo is now, and really when the the last time Sevy checked on his bro's stuff?

Can't wait till we walk this one off.

At 7:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Gardner against LHP especially late in games is incompetence. He isn’t Jeter.

At 7:15 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Gardy never used to get doubled up on the back end, now he GIDP's a bit too often. That's steps. And he is the one who should be sitting for Frazier.

At 7:26 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Man, up 0-2 in the count.

At 7:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Win it, Birdy!

At 7:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Bird is so disappointing.

Romine has crashed.

At 7:41 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

This is an absolutely atrocious lineup. And it's way past time wondering whether or not Bird will ever be what he was pre-ankle issues.

At 7:42 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Bird will be fine.

At 7:44 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We have a bat order issue.

At 7:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If he gets enough time.

At 7:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They left too many men on base. They seem blind to the problem.

At 7:52 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Dumb, dumb, dumb. Just dumb decisions, whether it was in-game approaches in the box, not pinch-hitting for Bird in the 10th or the lineup in general. They can't afford to give away games like this.

At 8:03 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Boone loss, he set the lineup.

At 8:53 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Loaisiga demoted.

At 9:12 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

That's fine, he needs more fine-tuning in Triple-A. Good prospect though and flashed some potential.

Skip as many Sonny Gray starts as possible. Call up Frazier when he's allowed to come back up and play him four out of every five days. Realize that Gardner is a platoon player with one extra-base hit against lefties this entire season, so treat him as such. Find someone to take Walker and call Torreyes back up (no, he's not a starter, but he makes contact, which they could use off the bench).

At 5:02 AM, Blogger Rich said...

There should be some normalization, but the difference in current approaches at the plate between Stanton and JD Martinez is so stark it’s scary.

At 7:13 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Tanaka will be back up with the club next week against Baltimore.

Interesting bit of news as Harper informed his manager Martinez he wants to take some reps at 1B. Not sure how serious this is.

Cant imagine that lineup of Judge. Harper and Stanton.

At 7:28 AM, Blogger Rich said...

RAB suggests: Gray for Gray?

At 7:56 AM, Blogger Rich said...

If you have Stanton and Harper, Stanton plays first base unless Harper plays centerfield

At 8:03 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think you also have to be mindful of the fact that you already have Stanton’s contract, and Tanaka’s; Sevy, Judge, and probably Sanchez are going to have to get paid fairly soon, and you don’t want a roster that has no flexibility because of the contracts, especially when you have a minor-league pipeline thT can keep producing high and prospects unless they fuck with it.

At 8:04 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Hope Harper gets some time at 1B and see how he does for the Nationals.

He hasn't been the healthiest person based on the $$$ he will command so 1B might suit him better.

Besides Hicks is an elite CF'er.

At 8:24 AM, Blogger Rich said...

He’s on a hot streak. He’s never been anything for a long period of time

At 8:58 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Defense doesn't go into slumps.

Every player goes through hitting slumps.

At 9:47 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Defense can go into slumps. Around the 1980 All Star game someone stole Greg Nettles glove. Nettles was the best defensive 3B I've ever seen, and after they stole his glove he went into a defensive slump.

At 11:22 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Yankees are a main player for ja happ, perhaps the main player at this point. He’s at/near top of their list. #jays

At 12:17 PM, Blogger Rich said...

So Romine isn’t defensively slumping? He had been bad as a starter. I think it’s a slump.

At 12:31 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Better receiver than Sanchez. He is a backup catcher and good at his role.

At 3:03 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Romine is not a better defensive catcher than Sanchez. Sanchez frames and throws. Romine just seems like a catcher.

At 3:23 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Are you serious? You said defense never slumps. Yes, he is good defensively but hasn’t been good late as a starter, e.g., runners are 6-6 stealing against him in this stretch. So as I said it’s a slump because he is good. Jeez.

Oh and btw. if he is making Gray comfortable, the word needs a new definition.

At 3:27 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Gardner is batting leadoff. Versus a lefty. Against whom he has an OPS of .619. Perfect.

At 3:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

To b fair, a genetically engineered love child of Campanella and Pudge could not make him comfortable.

At 3:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Boone is Girardi with a personality, nothing more. In fact, Girardi may have been more flexible.

At 4:32 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s undeniable that for the last month. Hicks has been on a power surge.

At 4:50 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Will Higgy continue to start? He has more upside than Romine. At the worst it should be a 3-2 or a 2-3 split.

At 5:41 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Offer Hicks 3/$30M this offseason.

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Higgy just can't throw like he could before he had TJS. He has been a better hitter than Romine for a few years now.

At 6:00 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

German fell apart in a hurry.

At 6:06 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

These kids are trading their friends every time they can't contribute a quality start.

At 6:08 PM, Blogger Rich said...

H went from looking like Sevy to looking like Gray in 10 seconds

At 6:09 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They’re gonna get Happ and someone else. Can’t rely on either Gray or German.

At 6:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They have to be willing to withstand development if they are going to get to and remain great.

At 6:15 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think they'd prefer that pitching development take place in the minors. Though I do think Justus is now damn close to being that second pitcher they get.

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Cole is a true Yankee.

At 6:32 PM, Blogger Rich said...

A large reason Sevy is the first important starter in 20 years of Cashman has been a lack of tolerance for ML development. And he struggled here.

We know Gray is going to be permitted to suck, so why not let kids suck less?

At 6:36 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Because they have a pennant to win this year. Btw, I don't think anyone we traded away in the past 20 years, other than IPK has done much. They kind of ruind Joba, and didn;t see how Phil Hughes had become too much of an arm thrower (he had been drop and drive when he was blowing up the minors, but not after he tore his hammy).

At 6:55 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That’ has always been the stated reason.

Yet they allow Gardner to flounder v. LHP and Gray pitch.

So if that’s it, it should be evenly applied.

Yes they drafted poorly too, but from Pavano through Burnett through Pineda, veterans received the patience in pennant races that kids don’t get.

At 6:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They need a bat as well, but there isn’t one that makes sense other than Votto, and he ain’t leaving Cincy.

At 7:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

BTW, I have no idea if AJ Cole is for real, but I’d like to keep him around to find out.

At 7:07 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The bat is Frazier.

At 7:12 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Most of the bats they have are still underperforming -- or out, like Sanchez.

At 7:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The other thing is AVG doesn’t seem to be prioritized.

At 7:13 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Games like this suck because the offense did its job but could really use some more runs because of the bad pitching, but they’ll likely just phone it in and pray they can hang on.

At 7:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Drury is sloooow

At 7:24 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Didi is a bottom-of-the-order hitter batting fifth based far more on reputation than anything he’s done since May 1.

I feel like average in general is a rarity these days thanks to the uptick in strikeouts across the board.

At 7:26 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It has declined but if the Sawx have any edge it’s the two .320+ hitters.

At 7:30 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Judge and Stanton and Sanchez haven't gone nuts yet. Bird hasn't been Bird yet. And we're still finding out how great Torres and Andujar are, but they've been our big advantage offensively.

At 7:37 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Torres may be one at some point.

Shreve earned the right to suck in the future.

It’s why Frazier must be kept

At 7:50 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I love oppo-field cheapie home runs.

At 7:55 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I thought we were going to see a lot more of those by now. Now it's all about how fast Judge and Stanton can get to 40.

At 7:57 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Big win!

At 8:49 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Huge win. Tanaka will certainly replace German in the rotation.

At 9:03 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Huh? German is replacing Montgomery. Loaisiga (sp?) replaced Tanaka when Tanaka went down.

At 7:54 AM, Anonymous Yankyfan said...

Famillia is a SS/CF....Radney Is a RHP

At 8:01 AM, Blogger Rich said...

More no Andujar, Walker, Didi cleanup. If this is analytics, I prefer feel

Does Gray get replaced or does he remain the suck!

If he pitched like German did last night, people would be praising his progress.

At 8:02 AM, Blogger Rich said...

*more Walker, no Andujar*

At 11:27 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Higgy!

At 11:50 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

German will get sent to AAA when Tanaka comes back.

At 11:54 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Why do you feel the need to keep saying that?

At 12:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

CC is our #2.

At 1:18 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yf, serious question: Are you a troll? Because I asked how that works if German is the fifth starter, replacing Montgomery.

At 2:31 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...
