Yanks Draft, Day 2

Last night, the Yankees finally addressed the elephant in the room.  Organizational catching depth was not to be found.  The Yanks had gone from regularly picking and signing catchers while Jorge Posada was winding down, to almost ignoring.  Sure, in the pool era they had taken some intriguing prep catchers late, but they were never able to sign any of them.  College catchers taken were for Staten Island and org use only. They fixed that last night, taking the best prep catcher in this draft in the first, and an absolute beast of a JuCo catcher in the second.  They are also linked with two high upside C's in the 2018 IFA class.

I was leery of Ant Siegler's power potential as a player taken 23rd overall.  But he did have 13 homers this past season, and that's a lot for HS.  What's more he demonstrated good exit velo for the Yanks.  I've also watched every tape I could find of Siegler hitting, and the kid is very hittery.  I think he has great hands.

Breaux's just a big time Yankee Bat.

Anyway, I got up early so I could go vote before the draft started back up.  Today we'll do rounds 3-10, and should see the Yanks take a handful of cheaply signable college Seniors to save pool money for Day 3.  We'll see what else they do.

UPDATE:  Back from voting.  Apparently I was the only who got up early to handle his civic duty.  Okay, one final thought on our two new catchers: Both of them played on championship teams, and I think that's indicative of a few things.  First, you can't win a title if you can't turn double plays, secondly, you can't win one without significant talent at C, even if it's bat first. So it's a good sign that teams have won with Siegler and Breaux at C.

Onto today and tomorrow: the other elephant in the room is CF depth.  We used to be covered witn Slade, Mason, Dustin, etc.  Now we have nowhere to reach if we need a CF.  So I'd like to see us pop and sign a few high upside CF's over the next two days.  Wouldn't be bad to just stay up the middle. We traded Solak, and with Didi's inconsistency and Gleyber's best position being SS, it might be wise to collect a Solak level 2B, and some point over the next 38.

I'm not sure who said the comment earlier regarding Judge needing to improve his plate discipline but whomever it was, please feel free to click this link and look at the actual stats. He's top 15 in the league in lowest % of swinging at pitches outside the zone which is even more impressive when you factor in how much larger his strike zone is compared to his peers.

Speaking of catchers I have to admit I had no idea that Murphy is now Dback.

Ump's have been screwing Judge on balls and strikes since he came up and the Yanks need to send MLB the tapes because it is tacit game fixing or intentional game fixing.

That’s exactly what some people are missing, maybe including Yankee announcers, about Judge’s “patience.“ It’s pretty tough to control the strike zone and maintain your plate discipline when you’re getting screwed by the umps on a regular basis like no other player in the league. He’s an incredibly patient hitter and he knows the strike zone. It’s amazing given what he shown over the last year and a half that he doesn’t get more respect

Rich,, I know he won’t but maybe he needs to complain to the umps a little to start getting the calls. I know it’s not in his nature to do so, but to your point he will keep getting hosed otherwise. Your opinion has made me see my first reaction, was not the correct one. Thank you for he insight.

No problem, Michael. I think this had been going on so long that as Phil suggested it has to come from the top with video, data, etc

Yankees 3rd round pick is Ryder Green, HS OF .... a Vanderbilt Commit, must be saving a lot of money with the first two picks if we plan on signing him.
