Austin Romine, Paying for 2007
He is the upgrade we sought. Austin Romine is all that's left of a fairly abysmal 2007 draft. After the monster 2006 draft, which is still paying for itself through the contributions of Dellin Betances, 2007 has been sluggish. This, I think, it because in 2007 the Yanks didn't yet have crosscheckers or the wide range of scouting and analytical talent that they have these days. Also, George spent a lot in 2006 and may not have wanted to make it an annual thing in 2007. Anyway, the organizations attitude toward its system has turned full circle and back to the roots it established in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Anyway 2007 was the year the Yanks reached for the stars with 6'11 Andrew Brackman in the first round, after their actual first round favorites were gone. What's more, Brackman was a Boras guy who leveraged them for a Major League deal, which must have irked the living crap out of the Boss. In the second they popped prep catchers Austin Romine, son of Kevin.
Austin was most people's favorite pick, and he started out like gangbusters in Charleston. Splitting time with Montero, he hit about .300 and added 10 homers in the second half of the season. Anyway, they looked like the future catching tandem, but then, Romine's O started to lag. After, Montero was injured at the plate in AA, Romine made an awful comment about Montero's injury giving him more chances. Looking back, it was probably a mix of immaturity and frustration, but I had written him off. They took more catchers like Higgy, and signed Gary over the years and I rooted for them.
We came into the past offseason wanting an upgrade at back-up cather -- and he's the one giving it to us. He's been great in interviews, not display a shred of envy for Gary or anyone else, and is apparently a proud papa himself these days.
Getting back to the 2007 draft. He's what's left and he's what's paying for it.

The issue with Brackman, and I believe what made drafting him a bad decision is that he had never pitched much. So he had challenges in his rehab beyond the physical part.
I think we had wanted Porcello, and he went the pick before, so we swung for the fences.
Yes, he was the guy.
Suttle, who we took in the 4th was an advanced college bat, but he could never get healthy. When he, Montero and Romine were ripping up day games in the Sally, you could really start dreaming.
Carmen Angelini was the big hope with a Jeterian skill set, but bat never met ball enough and he was often injured. They also picked Damon Subllett who could really rake but not stay healthy.
Torres just showed why he probably should be the SS.
Yanks getting no-hit by a guy who has given uo 10 more hits than innings pitched.
Stanton has been so frustrating to watch.
Walker breaks up the no-no.
Romine walks.
Gleyber ties it up with a base knock.
Torres has great contact skills
Yup, frustrating.
Which, as previously stated, is what separates him from, say, Hicks.
Are you kidding me????
Hicks has to bat 9th.
They've been a little frustrating lately.
You don't make the first out of an inning at third.
Bird!!!
Judge!
Judge vs. Torres as the Yankees’ best hitter going forward is an interesting debate.
Do not discount Bird or Sanchez.
Of the 4 only Torres has gotten hot yet this year.
Btw back in 1985 Rickey Henderson went NUTS in a June series in Baltimore. 16 for 20 or something.
Double or nothing Hicks.
Base running error for Hicks.
Can we stop pretending with Hicks? He is awful. Cashman you aren’t going to make lemonade out of this 🍋. Cut your losses and trade him.
Hicks cost them a run.
Romine...trade...starting pitcher...
Not that I want to trade for anything but it might be selling high.
I took that to mean you weren't a full believer yet.
Not yet.
First and second with Betances and they get no one up?
Nice recovery but I think they were asleep or too complacent.
Billy McKinney has been homering all week....
Holder was up.
Sex act by umps on Judge.
They got Holder up when he loaded the bases.
YANKS WIN!!!!!!!
I think I heard that Gray didn’t walk anyone for the first time since 2016. Still skeptical about his ability to succeed herre long-term, but yay.
Frazier, Drury, McKinney ar all hitting. Adams had a good start.
Torreyes...not so much.
Guys in AAA keep raising their trade value.
You are so transactional.
If the Yanks are smart, trade some guys "like" McKinney for Comp picks + in the upcoming draft. We have too much talent at the higher levels and no place for them to break through. Better to get younger guys that could be ready in 3/4 years when the roster will be different and keep the pipeline running on prospects.
