Yankees Draft Day 1

We're finally here. Btw, Clint Frazier is in the lineup for game one of the double header that starts in a few hours, let's hope he goes off.  And let's hope the Yanks go off tonight. The picking will start at 7 PM EST, and the first two rounds, plus compensatories, will take place tonight.  It would be fun if the Yanks moved some extra inventory for a comp pick or two. In that sense, you'd be trading to your own scouts. It feels like they're going to pump up the bats, though, if the right pitcher falls in round one, that could go by the boards till the second round.  I'm hoping they have great deals worked out with prep talent in one and two, but we'll have to wait and see what's there.

The baseball draft is far less predictable than the NFL or NBA drafts.  The Rangers may be the only thing that makes the NHL first round unpredictable from year to year.  Anyway, even with the advanced analytical and perfomance measuring tools, the prospects sort of are ink blots, so most boards are pretty different.  Add to that the 10 round pool rules, and teams looking to strike deals early so they can spend more later has made it even harder to pick.  And remember, just because a pick takes less does not mean he'll be any less of a player.  Carlos Correa took underslot, for example.  And thout it was before the pool system, Mike Trout took the commissioner's recommended slot or just under it.

So even if the Yanks were to pop a below slot prep tonight, don't take that to mean they don't love the player.  Take it to mean they are just trying to game the system.

Now let's hope they trade for a comp pick or two - and trash Detroit.

I'm liking the Canaan Smith choice for a pic.

In an effort to change the time of the July 8 “Sunday Night Baseball” telecast, the Yankees are threatening to boycott ESPN personnel all year, according to sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking.

“It is a tool in the toolbox,” one source said.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, a former ESPN analyst, has been vocal in saying that the July 8 game in Toronto that was pushed back from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. should be reversed to its original

ESPN needs to back off, bottom line. It would be the height of stupidity to make the Yankees play that game at 8 p.m. with a doubleheader the next day.

@DanJFederico: "Regardless of starting pitching needs, the Yankees will be looking for bullpen help, too. Kelvin Herrera (0.71 WHIP, 2.01 FIP) and Brad Hand (45 Ks in 29.1 IP) are two names they'll explore. Will the be costly? Yes. But they'll greatly improve NYY's entire pitching staff."

Honestly, unless a sure-fire ace is available, I would much rather the team just shore up the bullpen. Both of those would be good options (and Hand would finally give the team a second reliable lefty reliever).

Management like to many fans think mortgaging the future is super cool.

Hand will cost much more than Herrera would.

IIRC the Padres wanted Torres for Hand last year.

That’s why you don’t make trades

Seriously why do so many fans have trouble taking a patient approach to the assembling of a team that can be great for a very long time rather than risk truncating it by sacrificing assets to overpay for veterans.

At 12:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It all depends on the assets, and what they're getting in return. If the Yankees can identify guys that are redundant* and turn it into valuable 25-man pieces, then they should do so.

*No, I don't consider Frazier to be redundant, even with the current outfield logjam.

We need to play better D.

And Hicks misplays one.

At 1:15 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t understand their love affair with Hicks.

I’m concerned Holder because he’s pitched well but they’re going to send somebody down to make room for Warren. It should be Shreve but ...

At 1:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It’s Kahnle going down for Warren. Perhaps they don’t think Kahnle is 100 percent quite yet?

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Clint is back out in left for Game 2. Any chance he can stay after today?

At 2:19 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Kahnle had been warming up while Sevy was in, and maybe he or they noticed something. Might be a paper move till the 26th man goes down.

At 2:51 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I would think it has to be physical because no way is Kahnle not superior to Shreve.

At 2:53 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s also why you can’t overpay for most relievers because their performance is so variable from year to year.

At 3:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think it's paper move and that the real move will be the loser of the Frazier/Austin duel.

At 4:01 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Austin can play a couple of times a week at 1B against tough LHP.

Frazier should continue to play everyday at SWB.

Yanks not grinding.

At 4:16 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I can’t believe Romine isn’t in the DH.

At 4:43 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

German needs to get it together. The stuff is too good not to be messing aroud.

At 4:51 PM, Blogger Rich said...

As Cone has said, he needs to not be afraid to throw strikes because his ball moves enough that he doesn’t have to worry about being in the fat part of the strike zone.

At 4:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

You don’t have to be an anonymous scout to see that Frazier knows how to hit.

At 5:00 PM, Blogger Rich said...

At this point maybe Gardner can only hit RHP, but he CAN hit RHP

At 5:21 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

It's like German has to re-invent pitching every start. Now he's cruising.

At 5:29 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Can't score...

At 5:34 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's what happens when you constantly leave men on base.

At 5:37 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

8 picks away.

At 5:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I can understand any one bad strike calls on Judge but there are so many.

At 6:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Getting close... we're up 4th.

At 6:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Boom

At 6:09 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

two more, then Yanks pick, and we should see the plan...

At 6:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If we lose it will not be for lack of baserunners.

At 6:14 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Thank goodness Turang is off the board, He would have blown up our pool.

At 6:14 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We're on deck!

Patient AB.

At 6:18 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I hate first pitch swinging after a walk

At 6:18 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We're on the clock!

At 6:20 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Loved Frazier’s last ab, working the walk. Judge needs better plate discipline and situational awareness.

At 6:25 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Siegler

At 6:25 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I feel like they should have scored like four more runs. Get this kid a win.

At 6:26 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Too many runners left on base. Herman has done well.

At 6:27 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Did someone really just say Judge needs better plate discipline?!! Wow

At 6:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah I know

At 6:30 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Sorry Martin if you don’t like my opinion.

At 6:32 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Calling it like I see it for as good as he is, he swings at way too many pitches out of the zone. Efen Singleton said he should be taking on that first pitch to take a look.

At 6:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If as Singleton said you want to get Warren back on that horse to knock off the rust. Do you do in a spot like this? No one else is available?

At 10:17 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Rich, fair counterpoint, Regarding my Judge point, I know the good far outweighs the propensities to strike out. I just think at times he needs to work the count, and not give away strikes, His zone is different than most due to his size of course. Tonight he will bounce back lol and hit a few homers and all is well lol.
