Yankee Tea Leaves

As of today there is one month left till pitchers and catchers report, though the cool kids like Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres and probably more are already down at the Tampa Complex working out.  Anyway, Gerrit Cole, so long rumored to the Yanks, just went to Houston for what is looking like a lighter 4 player package than the Yanks were being rumored to have offered.

Now reading the tea leaves, it seems the Pirates probable lost the Yanks trade offer somewhere along the way and had to make the best deal that they could with the Astros.  So the questions become: are the Yanks still in the trade market and did they offer the Cole prospects package in another deal?

Given that the Yanks want to stay under the tax threshold but still maintain some room for call ups and the deadline, I think they're staying in the trade market and out of the big FA market, and we'll have to see what they are doing about their "sixth starter" fixation and veteran infield comfort addition. I think they must have something cooking for one or both of those issues, and I think we should know pretty soon since the Cole trade has been made.

Heyman said Pirates wanted Andujar and Yanks said no.

I think the Bucs came out looking bad in this deal. I am over the moon though that we didn't Deal Andujar. IMO the most valued Prospectat this time we have. Two relievers and a couple projects in return for Cole? Good job by the Stros keeping Whitley..

If the Yankees had an elite pitching coach, maybe, maybe not. I don’t view Rothschild as being that. So I think it was an easy decision.

So Harper’s take is that the low price the Astros paid may mean Cashman didn’t want to pay a commensurate low price because he thinks he can get Darvish at a low price.

My comment was a reflection of my complete misreading of your post while in the supermarket.

The idea of including Clint Frazier so that you can move Ellsbury’s contract, in my opinion, is laughable.

So Murti is as dumb as Harper.

I wonder what they are up to.

Also, between this and a protracted Giant coach hunt I'm growing indifferent.

This would negate Ellsbury

Heyman
mccutchen would be nice move for #SFGiants. only 1 year from free agency, so not expected to be enormous haul (i.e. no heliot ramos). talks serious with pirates, as reported.

Done.

Giants still need another OF'er.

The pundit voices for including Frazier in order to move Ellsbury grows louder, now Kay. I think it’s ridiculous. I would be fine with trading Gardner. One year left. Good, not great. Getting older.

At 4:57 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Or trade Hicks.

At 5:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We'll have to see what happens, but ideally, Frazier, who is blocked, would only be traded for a commensurate prospect that is not blocked.

At 7:23 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Frazier won’t be blIckes for long. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t trust Hicks to be good for long.

At 7:25 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Blocked.

Blocked.

At 9:04 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Hicks isn't who is blocking Frazier, because Frazier is not a CF. Judge and Stanton are blocking Frazier.

At 12:15 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yet Gardner needs to stay? He would/will replace him. Hicks is entering his age 28 season and has never been either healthy or good for an entire season.

Gardy might go if they can't move Ellsbury and want to take on a big salary. But all of Gardy, Hicks and Ellsbury are better defenders and get on base better than Frazier has shown any sign of being or doing. Of them, I'd love to move Ells and let Frazier vie for 4th OF with Cave and McKinney, but suspect it will be Gardy going and Frazier still vying for 4th OF.

If Gardner is traded than Frazier has to play everyday in NY otherwise send him to AAA. He can only play the corners.

@CamdenDepot
#Yankees prospect Estevan Florial is a Haitian citizen and would play under a H2B visa. With the Trump administrations new restrictions on Haitians, he would be unable to play in the United States unless he was in the Majors to get an O-1 visa.

I imagine Randy Levine could make a phone call to get Florial and any other Haitan prospects an exception, and it might be the one time I'm happy he's the team's president.

Pretty sure he's already here.

He expounded on it in the thread:
@CamdenDepot
H2B visas must be renewed yearly. To play in the minors in the United States, a foreign worker must get one. Having one the year before does not exempt you from this requirement.

Pretty sure it's already taken care of, because he's down in Tampa.

Levine has been rightly very critical of the unfair way this tax plan impacts the maker states. So he may not have as much clout as he once did.Enough politics.

The latest: Moustakas isn’t getting the kind of offers that he expected after hitting a Royals record 38 homers last season, and according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, “I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with one of those (one-year) pillow contracts ending up with either the St. Louis Cardinals or New York Yankees, but not until after spring training.” A guest Thursday on MLB Tonight, Nightengale added, “It’s been such a cold winter for everybody, but particularly this guy. When spring training is opening, he could be a guy still sitting on the sidelines. He has told friends that he doesn’t have a single good offer or really concrete offer. He hit 38 home runs, breaking Steve Balboni’s (franchise) record, but before that he had never hit more than 22. It’s like teams are reluctant to believe in him. Which Mike Moustakas are you going to get?” There’s another probable hang-up: “Nobody wanted to give up those draft picks because of compensation,” Nightengale said. Because the Yankees were competitive-balance tax payers after the 2017 season, they would forfeit their second- and fifth-round draft picks if they sign Moustakas, who received a $17.4 million qualifying offer from the Royals. The Cardinals would lose their second-highest pick and $500,000 in international bonus pool money.

This suggests that the rotation is supported by management:
