Giants Coach Search Set to Continue

While these sort of dull Wild Card games have been playing out, the NFL Gossip machine has been singing out.  The feeling is that both of the Pats coordinators will be taking other jobs.  Patricia purportedly with the Lions and McDaniel with the Colts. If guess a healthy Luck and the #3 pick was  more attractive than old Eli and the #2 pick. Though it's possible that McDaniel wasn't getting an offer from the Giant and the only Pat they like is the Head Coach.  Meanwhile, the Giants will be interviewing Panther DC Steve Wilks tomorrow who is thought to have a big believer in Dave Gettleman. As an added benefit, if things don't change soon, Wilks will be able to start right away.  While, I'm not crazy about GM's having a favorite before the process starts, I'm thanking god it's not Saban.  Saban's a great coach, but Ernie obsession with him cost TC some important assistants in 2004, while Ernie froze the process to make sure Saban didn't want the job.

Anyway, it might very well be Wilks, and it would then be incredibly important that he find a great OC and QB coach, since we are almost certainly taking a QB in Round One, whether that pick is #2 or made after a wise trade down. Studesville is supposed to interview Tuesday, and maybe it will be for a different position.  We'll see.

UPDATE:  The Panthers have lost, so Wilks can take the job right away if it is indeed offered to him.

Stuff happens, and I won’t lie, it would be disappointing to a degree, but as I have said, I heard, maybe Sean McDonough, say that he interviewed Wilts a year ago and was very impressed, he had an opposite impression of the ‘doo.

I don’t think Shurmur is out of it.

Wilks?

I think it's lineky if the Saints can hold on here, Wilks becomes the coach tomorrow or Tuesday and is introduced Thursday.

Again, I won’t hate it; it would just disappoint me a bit.

I also think that if some coaches don’t want to come here, it may be because the breakdown of team cohesion may have scared people away. This is a tough job with a lot of upside, but real pitfalls.

Rich, I don't think that the way we felt they besmirched themselves over the Eli matter has moved on to hiring season. We got some very bad reports on McDaniels from some trainers through a poster on a site you used to frequent, and if he's an asshole, it would be hard to hide it. Plus McDaniels might not want to block Belichick or might not want to rerplace Spags, who had hired him when he ran the Rams. Who knows? Maybe youngish Luck and the #3 overall pick is too irresistable. Objectively, it probably is more apopealing than Old Eli and the #2.

Phil, re the Colts, only disagreement I would have is their weapons for the Qb are not nearly as good as ours.

At 5:09 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I think we are a lot closer to a run than the Colts. If it’s not McDaniels, so be it... whomever it is cannot not be another mcadoo.

At 5:09 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Other teams are interested in Wilks also, so it’s not just Gettleman.

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I agree, but if they use the #3 pick on Barkley, they give Luck a weapon he have nothing like. Also, our best weapons finished up on IR.

At 5:22 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Great point Phil. If they get Barkley that could add some years to Luck’s career. I wonder if we shift to a more balanced attack, thst our best weapons won’t be needed as much, and be fresher for the whole year..

At 5:47 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

they remember what Edgerin did for them.

At 6:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

OK, I hear you, Phil. There are definitely unknowns.

At 6:41 AM, Blogger Rich said...

No Wilks interview today.

Tomorrow

Matt Nagy is the Bears new HC, so they're not a threat for HC, anymore, but they and Gruden can hog assistants.

At 9:24 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So the rumor mill on Patricia there was wrong

At 9:25 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Oh wait, that was Detroit?

McDaniels down to NYG & Indy

With Indianapolis the more likely destination according to NBC Sports Boston writer/Pats Insider (According to his Twitter) Tom Curran.

At 10:30 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Indy sucks.

At 10:51 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Someone raised a good point about Wilts mentioning that he might bring the Carolina QB coach as OC. That’s too pretty inexperienced guys which doesn’t fit what Mara said he was looking for.

At 10:52 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

So is Mara an idiot today, or does he have a good standard?

At 11:13 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think he’s an idiot, but he’s the owner I’m stuck with so I’m merely pointing out what he said.

At 11:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Now that said, Gettleman has proven away from New York that he is a better general manager (emphasis on manager) than Reese. So that’s a positive.

Feels like "The Giant Way" requires an East Coast Football guy in a leadership position.

At 1:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I agree that this would be an ancillary benefit if he is the MOST qualified, but given the current less than wonderful state of the country...

@NYPost_Schwartz
Beason on Giants if they go with Steve Wilks as head coach: "I think it would be a good look, because he is African-American. Whether they’ve never done that before, which they haven’t, if the guy is a worthy candidate I think it’s a great look for Mr. Mara and the country.’’

At 2:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Giants had the first African American scout and among the first African American GM's. I wish we were beyond this crap. I think Wilks will work because he controls a room, like TC and unlike McAdoi, whom I expected to be much much better than he was.

At 3:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I do too, but it is what it is.

If he gets the job, you would hope he has an experienced and innovative offensive coordinator stashed somewhere.

I don’t know why they don’t interview college coaches.

@art_stapleton
Intriguing name here for possible OC choices for Wilks is DeFilippo. Norv’s been mentioned. Concern with DeFilippo is he stays for year or two, then leaves for his own job. (link: https://twitter.com/jasonlacanfora/status/950528506366251008) twitter.com

@art_stapleton
My understanding is DeFilippo contract may be up, and the other part is I believe teams can only block once. Eagles blocked him last year when Jets requested permission to talk re: OC. We’ll see.

If (I empathize if) this is true, may indicate that ownerships’ patience with the past regime was misplaced because when even a leader has this attitude, there is a problem that may not easily be fixable by new leadership:

@GiantInsider
Landon Collins said that he wouldn’t want to play for Belichick because he’s too “strict.” To me this is part of the Giants problem. The crap culture . Am i wrong here ?

@MikeGarafolo
From the FWIW department: Giants chairman Steve Tisch will sit on on today’s interview with Steve Wilks, sources say. It’s his first. Doesn’t necessarily mean Wilks is the favorite. But unlike other candidates, Wilks has a shot to wow all key parties today.

If they hire Wilts, one potential positive is that it may mean that they deferred to their GM’s preference. The idea that the GM has input but the owners will decide makes little sense to me. If you have confidence in your GM, let him do his job.

At 7:28 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Feels like it could be a quick hire, with Tisch present. Wilks has a chance to take the job todays we'll see if he's up to the task. And assistants weill be very important.

Steve Wilks interviewed with the Giants today and will be heading on to Arizona for his next interview, I'm told.

At 1:08 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Well I have supreme confidence they know what they’re doing.... ;)

Seriously, we’ll see.

At 1:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I wonder if there is a mystery candidate

At 8:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's what I've been thinking, because it seems like they don't have a plan otherwise.

Pat Leonard of NYDN says all signs point to Patricia

This is an I’ll believe it when it’s official situation.I would not be averse to Patricia, but these candidates have gone up and down more than cryptos.

At 7:25 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't know why anyone would want to work for Detroit, so I find this somewhat understandable. Patricia was the most intriguing to me because he developed new analytics and that sort of reminded me of what Belichick was like when we had him.

At 7:27 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Or would he be a placeholder for Little Bill? ;)

At 8:02 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Could be that, too.

At 8:05 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

One of the things that will be interesting to see is what kind of staff Patricia can put together. Feels like the Pats are most coaches first stop, so does he have the relationships around the league that will let him gather other coaching talent? We know Wilks has been around more, and does know guys.
