Giants Reach Out to the Pats

The Giants have asked the Pats for permission to interview their OC Josh McDaniels and their DC Matt Patricia. During the long Tom Coughlin Era, I always assumed the next Giant coach would come from Little Bill and his staff or former staffers. Thought it would be O'Brien this time, but looks like he's staying at Texas. Obviously, McDaniels and Patricia are both bright, and McDaniels intelligence probably makes him a good bet to do a better job in his next HC gig than he did in his first. Patricia went to th RPI, and is said to have revolutionized the Pat's metrics.  The Giants probably NEED him, or someone who does understand and can use the new metrics.  So between Schwartz, McDaniels and Patricia, the Giant are going to have a very busy bye week - and there could be more.

Btw, the Giants will start signing guys to futures contracts, so we could start getting a look at the different scouting priorities we'll probably be seeing.

UPDATE: Gettleman has told the Giant assistant coaches they are free to look for jobs.

UPDATE:  Studsville will interview on Friday, then the Giants will go interview McDaniels and Patricia on Saturday.

UPDATE: The Giants have also requested a meeting with Vikings OC Pat Shurmur.

In my opinion, the search begin and end in NE.

The preference for a defensive coach is a concern.

Why? He's gonna have coordinators and Handley, Reese, Fassel, TC and McAdoo were all offense first coaches and only Fassel and TC achieved anything.

I'm less concerned over offense / defense. I want a guy who can lead the team. One of the most damning comments McAdoo had this year after the Chiefs game, I cant remember in specifics but it was something like, "This week I felt like I needed to give a some attention to the defense because I think they needed some". Most top coordinators who fail as head coaches are those that forget the they are the leaders of all three phases of the game.

My preferred candidate is McDaniels.

The why is that I think he is really smart, knows how to form relationships, and will benefit from the lessons he likely learned from the immaturity of not being ready when he coached Denver.

Watch ND's OL in the game against LSU. We could do some shopping there if we trade down.

I think saying you want McDaniels is different than saying you want an offensive coach. McD probably will be better this time, but he's on guy. O'Brien isn't available, and strength right now of the available head coach types seems to be on the defensive side.

Requesting to talk to Eric Studesville, too. Former Giant asst coach, like DiFillippo.

Spags promised an interview.

Honestly, Spags is a courtesy don’t see how he stays here.

Not liking that they are waiting till Saturday for the interviews but hopefully that's the earliest anyone is granted.

I wonder if they would hire someone immediately if he blew them away?

This makes no sense because it shouldn’t have anything to do with a year or two. It’s not like he mentioned Webb.

Dave Gettleman on @WFAN660 on hiring a head coach with previous head coaching experience: “At the end of the day, is it helpful? Sure. Is it a dealbreaker? No.”

Since almost everyone they are talking to is on a bye week, the chances of us knowing about an immediate hiring are distant, if they make one.

The focus on Eli in that comment seems to indicate he's got a decision to make about Eli, and if they can still win with him.

At 1:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I get that but winning with him would be short term.

At 1:32 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Also, it’s hard to conceive of winning with Eli being anything other than: well if every single thing went right maybe .... In my opinion when teams do that it’s humongous mistake. Do what it takes to be great no matter whose feelings are hurt. Now the owner may opt for the compromise solution, but that would why I feel the way I do about him.

I didn’t hear the interview. Seems like some people think that Gettleman gave signs that Eli probably wouldn’t be here. I have no idea

McDaniels and Studesville on Friday.

If they want McDaniels, they probably have to make the deal while they're with him. He also has the Bears on Friday.
