This Week on the Blog

Last night, Lias Andersson's Swedish National Team finished second at the World Juniors.  Upon be awarded his silver medal, Lias immediately took it off and left the podium in disgust.  Coolest thing this century, but it also reminds me of what Gordie Clark was saying when the Rangers drafted Lias last June: words to the effect of "He has something we don't have." Now I think I know what it is.  Too many folks comfortable with losing on the Blueshirts, not Lias, though.

In other news from this past week, the Giants are still looking for a coach, the Knicks can't win the close ones, and the Yanks are biding their time.  Okay, let's see what's coming up.

Giants: The Giants are interviewing Shurmur today, after having interviewed both Pats coordinators yesterday.  It's unclear whether or not they are interviewing Schwartz tomorrow or will just continue on with Wilks and others starting Monday.  Meanwhiel, the Giants are involved in a tricky game of duck, duck - goose. They can't delay their decision while seeing of Belichick can come over, but they also can't rush it, in the event that Little Bill signals he'll be available.  Best case might be to hire one of the Patriot coordinators, then bring Bill in as a consultant for a year, before re-organizing around him - or not - next offseason.

Yankees: the Yanks signed IF Jace Peterson, former Brave to a minor league deal yesterday, as reports of Yankee interest in Manny Machado resurfaced.   In an interview with The Sporting News, Cash said the Yanks were comfortable going into the season with Glyeber Torres at second and Miguel Andujar at third.  This reminded me very much of his saying "Enrique Wilson is our 3rd Baseman," and "Bubba Crosby is our Centerfielder" in offseasons past.  So stay tuned, this could be another Valentine's Day Surprise.

Knicks:  KP takes too much crap for a 22 year old.  While it's probably true that he needs THjr back, as does the rest of the squad, the refs continue to let KP get butchered.  He should be collecting Moses Malone level trips to the stripe, but the pos refs won't do their jobs.  This is why people don't trust the league.  Also, Jarret Jack must go.  He's beyond the point of diminishing returns.  And Horny is not helping the team with his rotations, either.  We'll see what happens.

Rangers: The best players on the Rangers aren't on the Rangers yet.  They are Andersson, Chytil and Igor. In any event, the Rangers need to be sellers at the deadline, and make way for the next wave, including Igor, and replace their lousy coach with someone who can work with kids.  They have a chance to do a quick turnaround, like the Yanks did, but they need to organizational will to do so.

Alright, that's what's up. Have a great week everyone!

Playing Jack significant minutes at point guard is now hurting Porzingis and other young players’ development and it promotes a continuation of the losers’ mentality that could ultimately cost them Porzingis. It has to stop NOW. I get that Frank isn’t ready, and maybe the limitations in his game, which are real, will never go away, but he and Burke are better options because they give them a chance to get better.

I really don’t want to trade for Machado or Cole or any target with a very high price. That’s why I support trading Gardner in order to clear salary if Ellsbury can’t be moved without eating most of his contract, as seems likely, which saves close to nothing. Then they can sign Cobb or Darvish.

I do think if they can't move Ellsbury they'll have to move Gardy. Wouldn't be shocked if we see that in the next week or so.

Florio says Patricia to Detroit... Phil, you hearing anything?will it be McDaniiels?

At 5:23 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Re Rangers they need to be sellers, and move Nash and Zuke. McD maybe also. Next years class with Karlson and Dougty is sick. Mac will want that kind of money, it he’s not worth it. And I think Gorton sees it.

Michael, I no longer look for Giants info, like I used to. A couple of my sources have passed, and one of them created a misunderstanding with me that just wasn't worth it anymore. I think everyone was projecting Patricia to the Lions the whole time, though.

And remember, Florio was also the guy who said Coughlin was going to cut Tiki at the first team meeting after he took over... so it might not be Patricia:)

Phil, I totally can appreciate where you are coming from. Life is all about the positive, no room for negativity. Now that you mention, I do remember Florio TC... Patricia to Detroit does makes sense, because of the GM. I know some think Wilks is the favorite, however if Mara holds true to prior experience, I’d think it would be McDaniels.

FWIW, Heyman said that the Yankees were keeping tabs on Danish, and if his number lowered they would pounce. He also brought back up the Machado rumors if memory serves. Glad to see the Cole rumor was wron, as I’ve stated would be a bad investment. Knicks should be sellers also.

At 5:54 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yeah, Knicks and Rangers are poised for quick turnarounds because they have good scouts like the Yanks have. If they can move Lee, etc for picks, awesome. If the Rangers can move Nash and Grabner and Hank for good packages, all the better.

The Rangers need to reset for the next run, this group has run its course. I think Gorton slowly started that with the buyout of Girardi and trade of Stepan. I do think Lee and KOQ, can and should be moved for picks,

At 6:58 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Look at what Gordie did with picks this year, Lias, and Chytl will be studs and part of the future core. Igor should be here as well.

At 7:49 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Duclair has requested a trade and we should pick him back up. Zibby scored the gamewinner in the shootout. We need to get him going again, and keep him.

At 6:51 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I like the idea of getting Duclair back on the cheap... Similiar to what the Yankees did 2 years ago, Gorton needs to do now. If done properly, the turn around should be relatively quick.

There are now some reports about trading Hermangomez. Last year, he was the next Marc Gasol, h had a good European tournament, but now he is expendable on a team that has trouble scoring and getting to the foul line.

Why weren’t they in on Okafor? I realize he has had issues, but his post-up moves are really good.

And still no Burke.

I’m losing interest in the team.

At 7:46 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yeah, the Henrangomez situation is ridiculous. Though, Enes Kantor is sort of a better version of where Willy is now. I'm not at all sold on Horny as the coach. Doesn't deploy his assets correctly.

At 8:08 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I’d like to see Fizdale take over the coaching duties. Hornacek is in over his head in my opinion. At the end of this month after they total whiff the road trip, wouldn’t surprise me to see him go. He was a Phil pick, not Mills. Besides the obvious lack of talent, they should fix the thing they can now, and it’s coaching.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t think Hornacek is getting fired for several reasons: his contract, he’s represented by the same agency as management, he has no PG, and Hardaway’s absence.

I think the biggest problem has been that management has wanted to try to compete, they got early evidence that they could, but it’s now clear that they can’t.

Even Hahn is calling for Burke, and he is tied in, so I expect it to happen soon.

They are not going to be truly competitive until they get a consistently good PG who can break down the defense and kick the ball out. That could change everything because more guys will get open shots and that will create spacing.

Are Frank or Burke capable? I don’t know, but we need to start finding out on a regular basis.

The other thing that is comically pathetic is the media getting on Porzingis for not being an instantly complete player with little supporting cast. He seven feet whatever; he can’t get his own shot anytime he wants.

At 11:01 AM, Blogger Rich said...

And if he does eventually get fired, I want Mark Jackson.

At 11:34 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't want Mark Jackson.

At 12:01 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Could you expand on that?

At 12:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I look at him like Jeff Van Gundy. I think they are very good at taking a team that is a long way from winning and getting them one step away from winning big. At that point, they both probably have to go, but the Knicks are a long way from being in that position.

At 12:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s tough to see Coughlin in the Jags’ booth. As I’ve said, we have an owner that opted for Reese over him. That says it all.

At 1:52 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Two things, Mara wanted TC to stay with the organization. The Jags aren't letting him coach nor is any other team. He had lost his fastball as a coach, and was blowing games on clock management and other bad decisions over his last two years.

Everyone on the Facebook Knicks groups has a two part scheme to fix the Knicks and it goes like this: hire Mark Jackson, trade KP. Thus, I believe Jackson wouldn't know how to coach KP, and I want a coach who can build around KP, Frank and whatever picks we make in June.

At 3:31 PM, Blogger Rich said...

No not as coach, replacing Reese.

I definitely don’t want to trade KP.

I’m not on Facebook, but I follow the company pretty closely for other reasons.

From what I’ve read Mark Jackson is good at building mental toughness. I think that this team needs that badly.

Now looking at the other side of it. I think the best reason not to hire him us because he had a lot of success at Golden State and nobody has hired him.

At 3:51 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I believe in ball movement, and I think Jackson favors iso-power ball. Kerr very much took the harness off the Warriors.

At 7:06 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They need someone to protect KP physically.

At 11:14 AM, Blogger Rich said...

When Alan Hahn says the NYK might not be able to afford to trade O’Wuinn because of a playoff push, do they really have enough talent to worry about that? But that may be what the brass thinks.

At 1:03 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Hmm, the post you made about the Stros didn't show up here, it showed up in my email, but I agree. I think we're getting a different surprise with part of that package and room made to sign a stater.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah they’ve been issues when I use my phone

At 7:29 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It sounds like Burke coming to the team is in the works

At 9:27 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Cole to the Astros.

At 9:36 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Not done.

At 10:25 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think it’s bullshit attempt to get the Yankees to raise their offer

At 11:03 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So sadly, it looks like I was right. If I had to guess Cashman is willing to give up Frazier and Adams but not Andujar because how could they even if they sign Todd Frazier, because Todd sucks. Just a guess.

At 11:15 AM, Blogger Rich said...

By sucks I mean he is a placeholder, his range of outcomes go from being kind of bad to maybe decent, but he’s not the reason you are able to trade your best third-base prospect.

At 11:37 AM, Blogger Rich said...

This be good if true:

An industry source told The Post’s George A. King III that the Yankees had shut down talks with the Pirates over Cole. Earlier in the day, there were reports that the Astros had a deal in place for the 27-year-old, but those appear premature.

So those new age thinkers on the Astros are using dirty old media leak tactics.

Something is wrong with the way Porzingis is approaching this game. I know the point guards are not good, but it’s got to be more than that.
