Yanks IFA Stuff
Today is Domican SS Ronny Rojas's 16 Birthday, and it could be very revealing as to why the Yanks traded for all that IFA dough. First, let's take a moment and realize Otani would have to be an absolute imbecile to take short, pool restricted money this year when he can take 8 digits next year just by spending another year pitching and hitting in a place that absolutely adores him. So I really don't think that's a consideration for the IFA "super fund." I think it's far more likely to be spread among a number of later birthday kids, starting with Ronny Rojas today. He's a switch hitting shortstop, or at least has been trained as one. Eduardo Nunez was a swich hitting SS when we signed him, too, but it didn't last. In fact, unless Abe Almonte is still switch hitting, I think Melky Cabrera is the only guy the Yanks have allowed to stay a switch in the last 15 years or so.
Anyway, there were some other notables from this year's IFA class who remained unsigned, so the money might be for them. Additionally, the Yanks have been having some success signing overaged IFA pitchers lately, Sevy, Domingo, Fiercer, etc. So they could be bonusing some big 18,19, 20 year old power arms, too.

I agree the Otani thing doesn't make any sense. Tanaka actually rented a jumbo jet for himself and his wife and dog, so these guys understand conspicuous consumption.
Sevy and Sanchie.
Who else will become part of the elite core?
Judge needs consistency.
Bird needs health.
As does Torres and Frazier.
Judge is already part of the elite core and Bird started the influx.
Ohtani has to wait 2 YEARS, not just 1 more. He's a guy who wanted to sign here out of HS but it was nixed by MLB because they didn't want to harm the relationship with NPB.
I beleive we already had Rojas agreement in place with our original cap, so I don't know if the trades for more IFA will impact this. I'm curious if there's any cubans that come out that we would be interested in but from the research I've done it seems the big time talents have pretty much defected already.
Right, Otani doesn't turn 25 until during the 2019 season, so if he wanted to cash in big, he would wait until after that season to be posted. There have been some hints he's willing to forgo the big money, at least initially, just to be able to pitch in MLB. We'll see.
Does Holliday have a spot in the lineup when he returns? He's hitting .077 since starting his rehab assignment in High A, and with Bird showing signs of returning to form in his rehab assignment and Headley playing too well right now to bench, I'm not sure there's room for Holliday as a regular at this point.
Could Otani get an opt out?
Joey is so differential to veterans I think Holliday will get a shot. I'm more curious about what he does with Headley/Frazier because he seems to understand that Bird has to play.
Otani could come over after this season but he's subject to IFA rules, which means his bonus is capped.
If he waits 2 years, he can come over in the same fashion as Tanaka.
Right, but what if be got a five-year contract under the existing CBA rules with an opt out in two or three years that would allow him to get the big bucks?
Garica has been useless.
And Romine can't make any throws...
Romine's bad throw costs us two runs. Wonder how much we'll hear abput that. 0?
Agree on both
Warren has a bad appearance, but they had that guy picked off if Romine could make a good throw.
I think Garcia is the Twins Manchurian candidate
I think he's about the 8th best current option. And Girardi apparently has no idea why we traded for Kahnle.
wtf is girardi doing. Warren has been brutal all inning, he needed to get pulled after walking Hicks. Unbeleivable.
And Rich, Otani cannot get a 5 year deal unless he waits 2 years. If he comes now, he will get the same type of contract that our 16 year old IFA get, which is basically a signing bonus + your basic minor league salary. If he comes directly to the MLB, he would get his signing bonus + minimum salary.
He's Cashman's Achilles' heel
Thanks
The ump caused this brawl.
Cabrera started the actual fighting. Over the hill former roider.
Not watching. I will have to find it
Just saw it. I assume that you mean that the picture who hit Sanchez should've been ejected. Props to Kahnle
Pitcher.
yes, Fulmer should have been thrown out. The ump then didn't give any warnings and threw Kahnle out. Such a joke.
Can't believe Upton just caught that ball either. Hopefully we come back.
Atta boy gary.
Horrific ump job and we're down 3 again.
umps literally cost us this game. i'd protest, if it did anything.
Do fucking think they can read minds?
Umpires and Garcia being awful cost them the game. And it could cost more based on the suspensions likely coming down. At the very least, Sanchez and Kahnle will be suspended. Wouldn't be shocked if Romine (though he doesn't deserve it) get suspended, too. Betances as well.
I'll have to game the appeals game
They will
Betances should not be suspended.
I fear that Sanchez will be hit hard.
Joe Torre, the rooster who took credit for the sunrise.
Dumb move by Sanchez especially in a pennant race.
It was but he got hit for being good and then he protected a teammate. Some other teammate should have been watching him.
It as a cheap shot on Cabrerra and Castallano while they were on the ground. Odor last year got 8 games for punching Batista face to face.
Sanchez will be sitting for a while.
Cabrera was not justified in hitting Romaine. It's a fight. Stuff happens.
Interview with Hal
He goes out of his way to mention Bird...
-RFBlues/Mike K. at work
So Pedro Martinez says Sanchez will be a marked man. The jerk pushed an old man to the ground. He still hasn't been punched out for that.
