Yankee Draft: Keep The Faith
Turns out I'll be on the road to Anaheim then in Anaheim when both picks are made tonight. I'll be tracking the draft and will write them up once I get back, but it will be hours later. Sorry.
In the meantime, the strength of the first round looks like LHP's and 1B's. I could see the Yanks maybe taking Nick Pratto he prep 1B from out LHP, either athletic preps DL Hall or Trevor Rogers or Pac 10 star David Peterson. All three of them would be a huge add to the farm, with Peterson possibly being a fast mover.
If they go prep in one, I'd expect them to pop a collegiate arm or bat in two. In fact, I think they'll probably go with a collegiate player in two and then pop a prep in round three, which is what they've been doing lately.
I'm sure whatever they do will make sense, and strongly believe we have the best scouts in baseball again.
Enjoy the draft and I'll be back on with a write up after I get back from the game. Go Yanks!

My money is on Pratto. I mentioned in another thread that CA is Damon's backyard (not literally) and the past 4 drafts back that up:
Clarkin - CA
Judge - CA
Kareplian - CA
Holder - CA
Rutherford - CA
I personally would like to see D.L. Hall or Rogers but will be fine as long we don't get another Cito Culver pick from left field.

2017 Draft: Yankees select RHP Clarke Schmidt in first round

2017 Draft: Day One Open Thread
Monday night, the Yankees selected South Carolina RHP Clarke Schmidt with their first round selection (16th overall) in the 2017 amateur draft. Schmidt had Tommy John surgery earlier this year and is still rehabbing, though he was considered a potential top ten pick when healthy. I didn’t bother to profile him because the Yankees have steered clear of injured pitchers in recent years. Go figure.
They drafted a kid linked to TJS? When has this worked out for the Yankees, like, ever? Odd pick.
My guess is that the Yankees feel their system is pretty stocked so they have the ability to gamble on an upside talent.
I don't know enough about this kid to know whether or not that risk/reward makes sense.
I wonder if this is a save-money draft in anticipation at making a run at Otani in the next couple of years.

I butchered that with speech to text, so I'll try again.
If they sign them to below slot contract and they don't spend the money in this draft…
With the selection of Sauer in the 2nd, the first pick of Schmidt now makes more sense. In his own right though, Schmidt is an absolute workhorse who's 93-97 with a filthy slider and outstanding results to show for it
So not about Otani. It was about taking a high-end talent with risk and saving money for another high-end talent who fell. Maybe they wanted Pratto, for example, and when he wasn't there they shifted gears
Also worth noting that, given there are only five spots in the rotation, some of these arms might end up in the bullpen. They may have just wanted to take talent they liked then let it sort itself out.
