Drew Causes Yanks to Lose Series

Stephen Drew hits .200 or lower, and has played Second Base for the Yankees all year.  Tonight, his "plus" glove cost the Yankees 3 runs and they lost by 2.   Second Base for the Yanks has been a minefield ever since the Yanks were too catastrophically stupid to lock up Robinson Cano before he hit thirty.  But since then, it's just been major league has beens playing second.

What they did have time to do this year was break in Rob Refsnyder, who, though not great defensively, grinds out his AB's like the Yanks of old.  Frankly, that even looked like the plan when they called up Refsnyder and said he would play.   Then, he even won a game at Fenway with his bat.  And Girardi said he was gonna stay -- only to send him down in an apparent banishment two days later.

The Yanks have had a short lineup all year because Drew's been in it, and because either Gardy or Ellsbury is always hurt or playing like their hurt, and because Headley can't hit a fastball anymore, and Didi was learning, etc.   Drew was the only bad part who was there because Giradi insisted.  Well, he overtly cost the Yanks the game tonight and it's on both Drew and Girardi.

This has long since been a matter where the organization should have stepped in, but, for whatever reason, they haven't.  Thus they're getting what they deserve and we fans are not.

Also, Girardi, catastrophic dumbass that he is pitched both Warren and Mitchell in this game, and they were probably the most likely candidates to pitch one of the weekend series against the Jays.  Now it's likely to be Girardi's other boy, Chris Capuano going.

This will probably end disastrously.

Well said. I really can't take this shit anymore. Get this anal retentive asshole out of here and he should take Drew with him.

Three more years of Headley, whereas had they been wise in spending big on IFA players, they'd have had Miguel Sano's bat. Now instead they're straddled with a declining player who's owed way more than he's worth at this point. Someone needs to point this out to Hal about why not investing in long-term planning will eventually come back to bite you.

Gardner is a first-half player who stinks on the base paths and is injury-prone. Ellsbury is inconsistent and is also injury-prone. Beltran can't field anymore. McCann is good but overpaid, Didi is a good defensive shortstop with a limited offensive game, in that he's not an OBP player, and second base is a black hole. It was foolish to think A-Rod and Teixeira (who is going to miss time every year) could be relied upon to carry this team an entire season, and the chickens are coming to roost. Not even a solid pitching staff — credit where it's due — can bail them out, thanks in part to the fragility of pitching that's rearing it's ugly head even now.

Unless and until this team gets younger and gets back to building a lineup that works counts, gets on base and has a few big bats to drive them in, then it's upside is limited outside of hoping it makes the playoffs and gets hot at the right time. Whether it's Girardi, Cashman or whoever that needs to change, they need to change, period.

For 219M, they should at least be able to get on base and grind at bats...It amazes me that we have so many crappy on base guys on this team -- Ellsbury among them.

They've gotten away from that type of player and it's hurting them.

It is a product of giving the appearance of contending rather then formulating a strategy for enduring success. Teix and A-Rod covered a multitude of mistakes. Now, with injuries and regression to the mean, the mistakes are apparent again.

I can understand why the manager and general manager think pitching is so important, but they don't seem to appreciate how fragile it is. So in order to hedge against that, you need a dynamic offense. That that requires hitters who can get on base and have a versatile approach at the plate.

That is what has turned the Mets into a really good team: they added offense to the pitching.

Of course, there are sufficient positives to present an opportunity, if they have the discipline to take it.

The minor league system has significant upper level prospects for the first time since 2007-08; Severino is already here and producing, as is Bird; Tanaka is very good most of the time, and I hope good enough to opt-out in two years; Eovaldi is solid as long as he isn't on his way to TJS; Warren could be a good back-end starter if they let him; and the pen is good unless Girardi kills Betances, and it seems he is trying to do that; and Didi is a net positive.

What happens to Sanchez, Murphy, and Refsnyder will reveal a lot about whether they want to be good for a long time, or whether it will be more underperforming their potential.

I left out Pineda because I have no idea what he really is.

I think the Mets hit the jackpot when they got Cespides as a rental. We'll see what happens to their offense if they don't resign Cespides, however. I would also be open to keeping Tanaka if he proves to be a true ace. Aces win WS.

Otherwise I agree with LNJ and Mike that the minor league system is starting to produce and we'll see how they treat the guys who have come up and whether they are really committed to putting together a good core of young talent.

Jennings in reviewing bullpen options:

10. Chris Capuano
The familiar veteran. Designated for assignment four times; brought back four times. Not sure he will ever be used in a huge spot, but he could certainly be used for a bunch of innings if a situation calls for it.

Make it stop. It's like talking about laymen performing surgery.
