Yanks Waste Tanaka
Yanks just lost a game 2-1 because their untrusting and unresourceful manager doesn't trust anyone he hasn't abused. Tanaka tonight gave the Yanks 8 innings of 10K 1 run ball. Unfortunately, the Yankee lineup with featured both Drew and Ryan couldn't muster anything but an ARod solo shot all night. So the game was tied 1-1 going into the night and with Betances and Miller unavailable the manager goes with Chasen Shreve, who has looked shot for his past few appearances from Girardi's earlier overworking of him. He immediately gives up a homer to Chris Davis and the Yanks go quietly in the 9th as they went all night and lose.
We are now post 9/1 and Girardi should have Goody, Rumbelow and others in a vastly expanded pen who have not yet failed from his favoritism out there in the pen. But Girardi apparently only trusts those he's wrecked or on the way to wrecking. Tough loss and a waste of a great Tanaka outing and some great defense.

The manager is a baseball obscenity.
It's long past time for an intervention from the suits.
Would the jerk play him?

Given their obsession with defense, no. In fact, it's why I wish Refsnyder were still in AAA getting at-bats.
**UPDATE** Baseballprospectus.com has a new pitching statistic they say is the best at evaluating pitchers. The stat is called DRA and according to that site’s list of 718 pitchers, Tanaka ranks 26th, well ahead of Eovaldi and Pineda. See the list here if you have a paid account there. They adjust his WARP (their version of WAR) a full win higher than Fangraphs or Baseball-reference.com.

While speaking to Andrew Marchand, Brian Cashman seemed to indicate the Yankees are unlikely to sign any high-priced free agents this coming offseason. “Our activity usually (ties) to expiring contracts,” said the GM, who also noted the team is “pretty locked-in” on most players, contractually speaking.
Sounds like it's trades, call-ups or bust this offseason in terms of adding players, unless they go for a Zobrist at second (which I would be against).
That's what I have been saying. The problem is that when they do have expiring contracts, most of the money has been spent very poorly and the resulting roster inflexibility imposes significant opportunity costs when better FA or trade targets are available.
Zobrist is 34. Tying him up for even three years with this aging roster would be absurd.
Are they yet again going to bet their offensive fortunes on three very fragile guys at or nearing 40, and another who plays a position at which injuries are often part of the job description after 30?
Then there is Ellsbury who is one of the biggest teases in MLB, who is more injury-prone then any of them.
That is why they need to play any young offensive player they can anywhere they can.
Joey seems to loathe doing that. Does Cashman? Until he replaces Joey, I have to think he agrees.
Apparently, Tyler Austin made it throufh waivers and has been outrighted to Trenton. They probably have a good shot at re-signing him over the winter because they do pay their mil fa's more than most.
Aye, Zobrist at his age, when you factor in the decline players are now seeing in their 30s compared to just 10 years ago, would be a mistake. They need to figure out what the long-term plan is at second, whether it's Refsnyder or someone else. This Stephen Drew nonsense needs to have run its course by the offseason.
I disagree Cashman loathes playing young offensive players, I just think he over-values defense, which is preventing guys like Refsnyder and, going forward, Sanchez from getting legitimate shots. If Girardi is as uncomfortable with young guys as he allegedly is, that is something the team needs to address.
Mike
I do know what Cashman thinks, I only know what I see, and that is not forcing some players on the less celebrated of the two Joes, and the older Joe had a roster that provided a much bigger margin for error.
I actually like giving Ackley a chance but effectively giving the middle finger to Refs is bullshit. He did help them win a big series in Boston.
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Chase Headley 3B
Carlos Beltran RF
Brian McCann C
Alex Rodriguez DH
Greg Bird 1B
Dustin Ackley LF
Didi Gregorius SS
Stephen Drew 2B
LHP CC Sabathia
The Refs situation is an embarrasment and it sends a very mixed message to the guys on the farm.
Eppler is interviewing with both the Angels and Mariners.
If there is any downside to Eppler leaving, it would be if he takes scouts with him.
The upside is if he takes the creep in the manager's chair.
(I can dream, can't I?)
Drew with another bad play that can't be called an error.
Lackadaisical D makes it 1-0...
Beltran offsets his crap D by going oppo 1-1.
Beltran is the only one who's shown up tonight. Headly was beening missing way too many fastballs.
Drew screws up again... two more runs score.
Fuck Drew and Girardi
Intervention time
Jesus, Yanks made three outs in under 10 pitches for the second or third time today.
They are a reflection of #28
ARod having a rough one.
Did Cashman make this move?
