Yanks Stuff
In the post win euphoria today, we got some bad news. Nathan Eovaldi will miss time with "elbow soreness." They're saying 2 weeks, but let's just say "time" because we know how these things go. This doesn't surprise me, too much, since Nate's amazing progress had seemed to stall and go backwards over his last two starts.
I suppose getting CC back will make up some of the innings, but it might fall to Bryan Mitchell to pick up some starts.
Most of the Yankee minor league teams are done, with just Staten Island and Scranton heading into their playoffs. Pulaski and DSL1 were previously eliminated. What the Yanks don't have, for the first time in a couple of years, is a recentish college pitcher who's ready to help, like Phelps, Warren and others. There are more on the way, and both Severino and Mitchell came through AAA this year, so it's not really a drafting flaw, but, perhaps a misallocation of Warren and Nova and Mitchell.
We'll see. We'll also see if Rob Refsnyder, who's been up for a week, will ever get another AB this season...
The next stops for most of the prospects is Instructs and Dominican Instructs, the AFL, and eventually the Captains Camp.

Aa I said, I think this manager is an accident waiting to happen.
What's sort of funny was Cone, who did Eovaldi's last start, saying that Splitters don't necessarily cause injuries. His citation for that was that when orgs didn't teach them, TJS instances still went up. But, it's also true that both of our guys who rely on the split have had to be shut down for awhle this year.
True, when you spread your fingers to throw a split you feel it in the forearm right by the elbow.
Relatedly, I saw this on ESPN.com

Yeah, but Girardi's not overworking him...
It's good to see Bird getting the opportunity to play through his mistakes, and he sure doesn't seem to be shy of clutch situations, which gives me alot of hope for his future with the club. It also makes me wonder what the full story is with Refs -- did he really do something to tick off Girardi and, if so, what? I hope this hasn't become a personal thing, because I don't see him winning that battle, at least not now. But it would be surprising, since all the reports on him were that he was a mature kid with a good attitude.
Bird is showing anyone paying attention what a fairly rapid, despite the occasional struggles, period of development might look like, and ultimately pay-off.
Yet look how close was Girardi to sitting him v. a LHP with a reverse split that Boy Binder was somehow unaware of when he publicly (and inexplicably) talked about starting A-Rod 1B, despite his GM's and the player's opposition.
This dude is trouble in multiple ways.

Adam Warren being stretched out to take Eovaldi's rotation spot, Cashman says he'll need time to work up to it of course
These are Bryce Harper's numbers as of now: .336/.468/.646/1.114, 200 OPS+. He's a free agent after the 2018 season, when he will be just 26. Would you sign him for the 12/$400M it would likely take to land him?
Probably not unless the market really inflates.
I hope they can stop giving out long-term contracts, especially to pitchers, but position players too, because as we have seen, they will play a player forever if he makes enough no matter how bad he is.
So in-house all the way. Admittedly, I had no idea.
BUT those are sick numbers.
Who was the last player to put up a 200 OPS+?
Lawyer, I would normally agree, but... I think Harper might be the one player hitting free agency in the next several years that I'd make that exception for. And I think Hal and co. might, too — A-Rod and Sabathia will both be off the books by then, which leaves Ellsbury, McCann and Tanaka (assuming no opt-out) as the only big-contract players still on the books. Given the front office's love for marketability, I think they'd be all-in on Harper.
Stottlemyre68, meant to reply to you earlier. I agree the Yankees likely don't view Refsnyder the same way they do Judge/Bird for example. For all of the talk about starting A-Rod at first over Bird, Bird ended up staying in the lineup, a mandate from Cashman if I had to guess. What's frustrating is I could tolerate Drew for another season or two if he were a stop-gap for someone like Yoan Moncada.
And that goes back to a bigger issue: Had the Yankees been smart players in the IFA market, they could have an infield of Sanchez/Murphy, Bird, Moncada, Didi/Mateo and Miguel Sano. How frustrating is that?
Mike
I am hoping that they don't need to do that anymore, that they can develop sufficiently from within and trade the surplus for other young assets for positions of need.
International players help,, but there are sufficient pieces to build an enduring core in the amateur draft if you do it right.
I realize that Cashman's track of development is awful, but since I can't fire him, there is always the hope that things are finnnnaaaalllllyyy changing.
Girardi's presence makes that a lot harder, so I hope he wakes up to what a complete incompetent (and perhaps lying) fool he is, and gets someone better in the job.
Francesspool: Are you comfortable playing Bird at 1B against LHP?
Cashman: Yes, but it's Joe's call.
But it sounds like Bird will be in the mL next year unless others aren't healthy.
A (small) part of me somewhat understands Drew playing, but starting Ryan over better younger players should result in an immediate firing:
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Carlos Beltran RF
Brian McCann C
Alex Rodriguez DH
Greg Bird 1B
Chris Young LF
Didi Gregorius SS
Stephen Drew 2B
Brendan Ryan 3B
RHP Masahiro Tanaka
Where I differ is Harper is a generational-type talent, and his swing would fit well in Yankee Stadium.
Bird will be up next season, because Teix will get hurt eventually.
I hear you It's too long from now for me to think about it all that seriously.
Bird will be around next year. I think they will ended up wanting to make room for him ASAP.
McCann seems to be taking more walks lately.
Tanaka's being efficient.
Yanks are at least grinding a bit tonight.
Girardi's beyotch with another out.
The other beyotch gets a hit after going 1-21
WTG Beltran
Tanaka gives in and gives up a gopher ball...
Joey should just manage challenges, nothing else
A!
He appeares to be baaaaack
Refs could have PH, but the manager has decided to bury him.
Drew screws up an easy out. He should have let that one go.
Ryan makes a GREAT PLAY to bail him out!
Tissues for Joey.
Close to gassed
Paramus NJ in the house. (nearby town)
Now Didi makes a GREAT PLAY! And here come the homers!
Yeah really nice play
Girardi killed Shreve
Looks like we'll lose this one but maybe save the pen.
You have a manager who insists o. playing two terrible offense of players instead of two younger players that may provide some more offense. It's ridiculous and it can't go on forever
