Bird Bashes the Twins

It was a pretty interesting game at the Stadium today.   Nathan Eovaldi continues to evolve, and was perfect through 6.1.  Then, in the space of two outs, the Twins scored 3 runs, withouth really hitting a ball hard or far.  So, Eovaldi went from perfect to barely holding onto an quality start.  He did come back and pitch a 1-2-3 7th, though, and thus gave the Yanks better than a quality start.

But the even bigger story today was Greg Bird.  Bird hit his first MLB homer - a two run job in the 4th.  Then hit another two run shot to get back the lead in the bottom of the 6th to get it back.

This, in a nutshell, is why the Yanks were smart not to trade him, and why people will start appreciating the scouts a bit more as the rest of the kids start coming up.

Betances pitched a 1-2-3 9th for the save.  Scouts found him, too.

Eovaldi is still evolving (no pun), so an outing like today is both something to child on and learn from.

Hope Bird is a mainstay for years to come.

Eovaldi is the type who is pitching good enough to win, but not good enough to dominate.

Bugs me that when things go south on him, they go south in a hurry. Perfect for 5 1/3, then falls apart in a span of 6 batters - couple of hits and 2 walks thrown in.

Still, solid trade by Cashman.

At 1:25 PM, Blogger TB said...

Great job by Cashman and others with the no trading of top prospects. I love Birds swings, even when he was like 1 for 9. It's a sweet left handed swing that goes with where the pitch is thrown. Does not look like a dead pull ball hitter.

At 2:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Eovaldi was super dominant for 5 innings. Then he went with his 3rd best pitch against Mauer, and that was that. If you're Eovaldi and are gonna get beat, let them try to beat 101.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Aye, like I said, he'll learn from this. He's still fairly young.

The Yankees brain trust does deserve credit for seemingly correcting the developmental issues that plagued it not too long ago.

As much is I think Cashman has been here too long and not done a particularly good job for long periods, but I have no problem with anything he said to Jeter

At 4:31 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Agreed, though the Yankees ended up paying him more than he was worth at the time anyway.

What is Francesa saying about Refs today?

At 4:43 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Refs just made a spectacular play to start a 4-6-3...

They can't keep letting Drew make 4 outs or more a game.

At 5:00 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

And Judge has homered.

At 5:00 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That he is cocky

At 5:03 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

He said Bird fit right in unlike Refs, and that is contrary to a positive quote from Teix at the time and at least one beat writer who dismissed what Francesser said on Twitter

At 5:05 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I confirmed he is not cocky. All the kids coming up now either have the same team first last and only character -- or they GET IT. And Refs has never been a problem. This is starting to sound vaguely rascist.

This is from a Kiley McDaniel chat today, so TIFWIW.

Comment From Eli
You had been critical of the Yankees’ front office dysfunction with the Moncada debacle. Are things better now, especially with Felix Lopez’s leaving? Any updated thoughts on last year’s class?

Kiley McDaniel: When I talk about front offices that are dysfunctional, it isn’t because of the GM or the front office itself, it always goes back to ownership. If the owner/ownership group is constantly moving the target, changing who has his ear, dipping into personnel decisions, etc. that is how you get a front office that isn’t acting in the best interest of the team, but jockeying for position to keep their power.

There’s at least a few teams in this situation and it doesn’t change unless the owner changes. Some GMs are better at working around it than others and I think we’ve seen that Cash has been in don’t give an eff mode for a few years. He’ll tell us when he isn’t happy about something (Rafael Soriano deal, A-Rod in general, etc.) he was forced to do, in many cases.

-------

With all of this Refsnyder business, I'm beginning to wonder if Girardi has some kind of direct line to ownership. And Kiley seems to all but say the Moncada debacle can be traced back to Hal, which has been my belief from the start.

At 5:27 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

*To add, I disagree with Kiley that Cashman is a chatterbox when he's forced to make decisions he's personally against. My theory is he was told to shut up after the Alfonso Soriano trade, as there have been several moves after that deal that reek of being Randy Levine Baseball Negotiator Specials™.

At 5:36 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I've been saying for a while that Levine is the problem but it's taken with a grain of salt.

Girardi doesn't have a direct line to Hal but he most certainly does to Levine.

At 5:38 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

However, I'm not going to speculate why Refsnyder isn't up. It's a joke that Drew plays everyday but we'll never know why. Whatever.

At 5:43 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Refs made another great play after the DP earlier.

At 5:44 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I've been lead to believe Levine is the overall problem, too. Things have changed since his "work" to get the stadium done and he has turned his focus to the team.

At 5:50 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

That's why I want Cashman to have Levine's job, with a guy like Kevin Towers coming in as GM. Too much dysfunction will prove costly in the long run.

At 6:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Levine is a business guy. The Steins obviously think he has made them money. So he is probably safe.

I believe that there's blame for everyone. No one escapes.

dodgers beat rivals giants, angels for utley despite a less obvious need. kendrick is progressing, hernandez playing well.

So they dodged this bullet, but Drew/Ryan are still here.

I think Girardi is a much bigger problem than Levine, who is probably the reason both Cashman and Girardi have their jobs.

At 7:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Hal is the constant, and whichever ear he's listening out of is the variable.

At 7:57 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Maybe, but it's not like any of them have been consistently great at their jobs. That's why think completely fresh faces were needed a long time ago. That's not going happen so I'm hoping for the best

At 8:00 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

The MiLB system and scouts are really kicking ass, and Bird and Severino are just the tip of that iceberg.

At 9:34 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I do think the future is bright in terms of prospects, if the dysfunction doesn't adversely affect them getting a legitimate shot. That's my biggest worry.

At 10:42 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Contracts are going to end...

At 5:19 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Bird's stance reminds me of Olerud but his glove needs some work based on his scouting reports of him. Hopefully he can work on it to improve once Texeira's contract is up after 2016.

At 6:34 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The real issue is how to utilize him while Teix and A-Rod are still under contract. It's quite possible that being in the minor leagues at this point would harm his development. So they have to find a way to get him at least 4 starts a week, That shouldn't be hard because the older guys have been playing too much.

At 8:47 AM, Anonymous MBN said...

Lawyer;

I disagree with you on Bird. After seeing him the past few days, they need to find a way to get him in the lineup on a daily basis. I don't care if Tex and ARod have to sit 2-3 times a week. Bird needs to play every day.

It won't happen. Tex and A-Rod will continue to play every day. And this is going to be an issue. I hope it does not stall Bird's development.

At 9:39 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

MBN

I would do it and damn the collateral cost, but as you say, it won't happen.

So I am proposing what I think is very doable.

At 12:18 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Cano has really found it since the ASB:

.331 .388 .576 .964

But the red flag on him for like the last few years has been v. LHP:

.248 .270 .346 .617 this year

That's aggregate. I am not aware of a site that has it broken down by time periods.

Some have cited BABIP for why a few hitters should be doing better without looking at LD%.

Well, Cano's BABIP this season is .305. His career BABIP is .322, and his LD% this season is 25%, higher than his career 21.5%.

So this upward correction DOES make sense, unlike some others.

At 12:21 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Our infield could have feature Sano, Cano, and Bird with Sanchez and Murphy at C and eventually Mateo at SS.

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

It could have also featured Bird, Moncada, Mateo, Sano and Murphy/Sanchez. The rotation could have featured Tanaka, Darvish and Aroldis Chapman (they likely would have kept him as a starter). I hope this fact isn't lost on Hal going forward.

At 1:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't think Tanaka gets that contract with the partial UCL tear.

Of all the contracts they have given out over the last two years, Miller may be the only one that was good. Ellsbury's was way too high. McCann, Beltran, and Headley contribute, but their contracts are all too long.

They have an opportunity to get a do-over on years and years of mismanagement while riding the Core 5 wave and just spending and spending.

Bird and Severino may become a great new foundation, Didi too, to a lesser degree. Eovaldi can be part of that as well. Tanaka will be, if healthy. I am skeptical about Pineda because he has had soooo many arm issue.

Then mix in Judge, Mitchell, Sanchez etc. (I hope Refs, but that remains to be see.

I like Murphy too, btw.

I hope they will be very careful spending big bucks from here on out, and be especially leery of big contracts (and trading a ton of assets) for pitchers.

At 7:18 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Terrible loss.

At 7:33 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I haven't looked at the stats, so it may be selection bias, but it seems like they have trouble vs. the Indians.

And I'm mostly wrong:

Since 2013, they are 10-7

But since 2014 they are 4-6

Didi, however, has really cooled off.

Last 7 games before tonight: .143 .182 .143 .325
and 0-4 tonight.

Not a big deal. They just can't trade Mateo because of him.

At 5:55 AM, Anonymous MBN said...

I normally do not blame the umpires for any loss, since they are only human, and besides, over a 162 game schedule, calls usually even out. But the strike calls on Ellsbury and McCann were ridiculous. The ump missed them, and missed badly. Also the 3-0 pitch to Bird in the 9th almost hit the ground. Not sure how that was a strike. That one did not matter , as the next one was correctly called ball 4.

Reminded me of the strike zone for Livian Hernandez back in the playoffs some 18 years ago - Florida vs. the Braves.

At 7:18 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I was watching "Show Me a Hero" on HBO so I missed most of the game, but I saw the called strike to Ells and it was way outside.

I am definitely pro-robot.

I get ill every time Girardi says "offense comes and go" as if you can't count on it.

His starters have been EXTREMELY inconsistent, but he says nothing, and inconsistency is what characterizes the career of most relievers.

But for Teix and A-Rod, his job would be on the line.

Just horrible.

At 11:39 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They were getting screwed on outside pitches all nght. Ump must love soft tossers.

Some better news:

• Bryan Mitchell was able to run on a treadmill for about 25 minutes yesterday and said he felt fine. He was planning to play catch today. Amazing that just a few days ago he took a line drive off the face. He actually seems perfectly fine except for the small bandage on his nose. “He is progressing pretty well,” Girardi said.

• Dustin Ackley was doing some fielding drills this afternoon and could rejoin the Yankees in September. “He’s starting to do baseball activity,” Girardi said. “I think our hope is sometime next week send him out maybe on a rehab.”

At 8:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I heard the post game. Joe G. disagrees. He thinks lt could have easily found a gap if he would've pulled a little more. He was very happy with what Drew did.

The problems with this franchise run deeper than Levine.

At 10:46 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'm hoping the overall performance since the break is just a hiccup and not an indication of this team reverting to the barely over .500 form I predicted it was prior to the season. As LINJ has pointed out countless times, that will likely come down to what Teix and A-Rod do going forward. I'm optimistic because I think they're actually relatively healthy this year, but if my optimism is misplaced, I hope they play the kids.

At 8:32 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If the decision maker(s) truly prioritized offense, they would see that Refs and maybe Slade could help to offset any prolonged offensive slump.

We know about Ryan and Drew, but Young is mediocre at best and should not face RHP.

Why Joe G. rested so many players at once last night is baffling.

So who makes the decisions and will someone step up and address the team's offensive vulnerability???

At 12:54 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Great job by Severino.

Didi may be coming out of the prolonged slump.
